Ottawa driver facing thousands in fines for racing at 194 km/h on Hwy. 417

An Ottawa driver will face thousands of dollars in fines for allegedly racing nearly 100 km/h over the speed limit on Highway 417.
Ontario Provincial Police officers stopped the vehicle after it was observed racing another vehicle on Friday evening.
The car was found to be going up to 194 km/h on the highway where the speed limit is 100 km/h, police say. Officers also found the driver was operating a vehicle on a suspended G2 novice driver's licence.
Police charged the driver with dangerous operation and two counts of stunt driving, one for excessive speed and one for racing.
They will also face charges for driving while suspended and the improper use of an HOV lane.
'Not only does the driver face several thousand dollars in fines, but they also face a criminal record upon conviction,' OPP said in a post on X.
Earlier on Friday, a Kitchener, Ont. driver was also charged for stunt driving for going 208 km/h on Highway 416 in Ottawa.
Stunt driving charges come with an immediate 30-day driver's licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impound.
Drivers face possible fines of up to $10,000, a jail sentence of six months, six demerit points and a minimum one-year driving suspension upon conviction.

Construction on the Eglinton Crosstown began in 2011 and was initially slated to be completed in 2020 but it has been plagued by numerous delays and is now at least $1 billion overbudget. Metrolinx has previously said that the public would be given a three-month notice before the line opens and that the company was pushing towards a 2025 opening date. The LRT spans a 19-kilometre route from Mount Dennis in the west to Kennedy Road in the east. Driver training has been ongoing on the route since last September. 'I will have to get back to you on the exact date but I understand it will be handed over to the TTC in the next couple weeks,' Ford said Tuesday.

Edmonton weather: Risk of increased wildfire smoke in Edmonton area
Modelling from Environment and Climate Change Canada indicates the potential for some thicker wildfire smoke to move into the Edmonton region from the NNW through today. The Air Quality Health Index forecast has conditions dropping from a low risk this morning to a moderate-to-high risk for this afternoon and this evening. Hazy conditions could persist through Wednesday, with the smoke gradually moving off to the east through Wednesday afternoon. Aside from the potential for smoke, we'll have partly cloudy skies in the Edmonton area with a chance of a few scattered showers and the possibility of a thunderstorm, very similar to what we saw Monday. Most of the province remains slightly unstable, so almost all of central and northern Alberta have a chance of seeing some pop-up showers/thunderstorms this afternoon. We're already seeing showers in northwestern Alberta (north of Grande Prairie) this morning. Afternoon highs will depend on the timing of those showers and the thickness of the wildfire smoke. But, I think we should get to around 19 C in the city today. As long as the smoke does start to move out on Wednesday, Edmonton should return to the low 20s Wednesday afternoon and then we're looking at highs in the 23 to 27 C range for Thursday, Friday and the weekend.
