Anthony Joshua told to retire from boxing immediately on one condition

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Anthony Joshua has been urged to retire if he is unable to secure a fight with Tyson Fury, with the former world champion set to return to the ring later this year
Anthony Joshua has been advised to hang up his gloves if a bout with Tyson Fury doesn't materialise.

The former two-time heavyweight king hasn't stepped into the ring since his defeat buy Daniel Dubois at Wembley Stadium last September. While both fighters appeared poised for an instant rematch, Joshua required additional recovery time following minor injuries sustained during their initial clash.

After the Dubois setback, Joshua's future remains uncertain, with many questioning what lies ahead for the 35 year old boxer. Ex-WBA super-middleweight titleholder George Groves reckons there's little remaining for Joshua beyond an all-British showdown with Fury.

Nevertheless, Groves confesses that the prospect of the British icon facing Jake Paul thrills him. The duo have been linked to a potential clash next year following verbal confirmation of a heavyweight encounter. The 'Problem Child' has repeatedly challenged 'AJ' in recent months and appears keen to square off against the boxing legend, reports All Out Fighting.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Groves commented: "[Jake Paul] is a gift that keeps on giving for Anthony Joshua. It'll be a huge fight, [with] a lot of money at stake and zero risk. As a fighter, at some point [and] definitely at Joshua's point of his career, you weigh up your risk [to] reward.
"And considering there's zero risk in a Jake Paul fight, apart from embarrassment if something bizarre happens, with a lot of reward, if he gets that fight, he's gonna be buzzing. But that's not the fight I want to see for Anthony Joshua. I'd rather see him retire or fight Fury."
In the midst of speculation about a potential face-off, Saudi boxing boss Turki Alalshikh disclosed that he had talks with Paul and even suggested that the American is prepared to accept a mere ONE PER CENT share of the purse. Speaking on 'The Boxing Voice', Alalshikh stated: "I'm not against what Jake Paul's doing in boxing, it's good for boxing to have a young generation."
'I'm against some kinds of fights he does. I'm now thinking him against Joshua. Joshua, if he destroys (Paul), it will be good for me. The headache of Jake Paul goes from my mind. If Jake Paul wins, I will know that Joshua is finished, and Jake Paul deserves his ranking and deserves to have a future in boxing. I don't want 50-50. In this situation, I want 99-1. Jake Paul has accepted. Now, next week I will talk with Joshua about it. "".
Anthony Taylor, Paul's one-time sparring partner, has dished out some advice for the American ahead of a potential clash with Joshua. In a chat with CasinoHawks, Taylor laid down his strategy for Paul, saying: "Anthony Joshua moves well. Jake moves well. But Jake is a little smaller, so if Jake Paul's gonna fight Anthony Joshua-go for it. Do it without regrets. Say that, 'I fought a world champ and a boxer who's a potential Hall of Famer.'".
"Do it with no regrets, and have fun while you're at it. Win or lose-you're having fun. That's all that matters. It's David and Goliath. But if you want to beat Anthony Joshua, you just gotta stick and move, big dog. Don't sit there with him. Don't sit there with him. For the love of God, don't sit there with him."

The main talking points as British and Irish Lions target Australia whitewash

Lions target clean sweep British and Irish Lions head coach Andy Farrell (David Davies/PA) Andy Farrell's tourists enhanced their reputations by showing they have the character to match their quality after emerging from a desperately tight second Test with a series victory. Now they are determined to take their place in the Lions pantheon by ending their Australia expedition with a 100 per cent record. No Lions team have won every Test since the 1927 visit to Argentina, while the 1974 'Invincibles' who took on South Africa were the last side to complete an unbeaten tour. Final Test but full throttle The series may already have been won, but no mercy is being shown to Australia in selection. Rather than rotating in fresh legs to reward deserving squad members who just missed the cut, the established 23 have been retained with the hard grafting James Ryan and unpredictable Blair Kinghorn the only new starters. The selection for the Sydney Olympic Park clash reflects how much the Lions value the clean sweep and by Saturday night only 27 players will have been used in the Tests. Leading the pride Farrell has been reluctant to say if he wanted to take charge of the next Lions tour to New Zealand in 2029, but after masterminding Australia's demise with a game to spare, the job would be his to turn down. Apart from the success on the field, the Ireland boss has created a harmonious squad environment and is revered by his players and coaching staff. When the tourists talk about a united squad effort, they mean it. 'I just love everything that the Lions is about' said Farrell on Thursday and there is no better champion for the institution described by manager Ieuan Evans as a 'glorious anachronism'. Among the greats British and Irish Lions' Tadhg Furlong (Brian Lawless/PA) Tadhg Furlong reaches a special milestone on Saturday by making his ninth successive start for the Lions, becoming only the seventh player to do so but the first in the professional era. For three consecutive tours the remarkable Ireland tighthead prop has acted as the cornerstone of the scrum, as well proving his quality in every other department of the game. Adding to the achievement is that he has kept his place in the Lions' front row despite his season being ravaged by calf and hamstring injuries. When he returns home, it will be as a Lions great. The Wallabies' last stand Australia shot down critics questioning their place among the Lions' tour destinations by going within 51 seconds of winning a captivating second Test. It was the performance needed from the Wallabies to validate the tour but the question now is how much they have left in the tank after rising to the occasion so manfully in Melbourne. Star forward Rob Valetini has been ruled out by his calf problem, but offsetting that major blow is that Will Skelton is able to continue in the second row despite his recent calf injury. The Wallabies are underdogs, but avoiding a whitewash is all the motivation they need to cause an upset.

Hibs transfer news: Will Scotland star Hanley be won over by Euro drama?

And to win over any potential signing who just happened to be in attendance. Yes Grant Hanley, we're looking straight at you. David Gray certainly believes that last night's scenes at Easter Road, despite his Hibs side eventually slipping out of the Europa League courtesy of two world-class goals from mighty Midtjylland, couldn't have harmed his club's reputation as a prized destination. Scotland defender Hanley, sitting the main stand alongside former international team-mate David Marshall for a heart-breaking 2-1 defeat after extra time, would surely have been an interested audience of one. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Although Gray danced around his club's confirmed and obvious interest in the 33-year-old former Blackburn, Newcastle United and Norwich centre-half, the Hibs boss did respond in the affirmative when asked if the whole occasion would have impressed any potential signing who might have been there, saying: 'I would think so. It was a fantastic night in terms of the atmosphere. The fans were outstanding. 'The amount of tickets that were sold, the backing right throughout it. Because being there as a player, there's no better feeling than when you start to feel tired and the crowd get right behind you. They certainly did that.' Ex-Norwich defender Hanley has 62 caps for Scotland Asked outright if he was aiming to bring in Hanley, Gray said: 'No, I think we're just always looking into the squad to see what can be done. I think right now, whilst the window's open, you're always going to be getting speculation and rumours. 'But for me, I'd rather talk about the players that are in the building tonight, purely because of what they've given me. I think that would be the right thing to do. And then we'll look at that down the line.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs have made Hanley aware of their interest, obviously. Marshall's role as sporting director Malky Mackay's right-hand man suggests that there's been at least some discussion over the terms of any deal for a player whose loan spell with Birmingham last season saw the Blues win promotion to the EFL Championship. Seven-figure offers rejected for Socceroos star With reports down south suggesting Lewis Miller is bound for Blackburn, that leaves Hibs with a gap to fill. Wedded to playing three at the back, Gray needs a group of five central defenders on his books to cover for injuries and suspensions. Asked if Hanley's presence in the stadium suggested that contract talks had begun, Gray said: 'No, listen, I think, as I say, there's a number of players that we're looking at. 'There's a number of players that have come up. There's areas in which we might need to improve. There's areas in which we're always linked, players linked away from here as well. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'So whilst the window's open, there's always a need to be active, there's always speculation. So we always need to be moving towards making sure we finish the window stronger than when we started it. And that's what we're working towards.' Miller, currently out with a minor injury, had an extension clause in his contract triggered towards the end of last season. Hibs have already rejected a couple of £1 million-plus offers for the Socceroos star, who can play in central defence, right back or at right wing back – but reports in the Blackburn media last night claimed a fee had been agreed between the clubs.
