Scholarship delay hits 3,500 Dalit students in UP; Mayawati seeks CM Yogi's intervention

Time of India30-06-2025
LUCKNOW: Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Sunday raised questions over the "scholarship problems" faced by Dalit students in colleges affiliated to Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
Claiming that uncertainty is looming large over the education of 3,500 Dalit students, she sought an immediate intervention of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath into the matter.
Taking to social media platform X, Mayawati said the government's "failure" to timely disburse scholarships to thousands of SC/ST students of colleges across several districts affiliated with Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University, Aligarh, has led to "widespread anxiety and anger among people".
She claimed that, as per information received, despite repeated correspondence by the university and district administration, the "insensitivity and negligence" of the Social Welfare Department in Lucknow have led to a grave threat looming over the education of approximately 3,500 Dalit students.
Asserting that the aforementioned university in Aligarh was established through the special efforts of Chief Minister Adityanath, Mayawati expressed hope that he will take a keen interest in its smooth functioning and urgently resolve this "serious issue".
Notably, for the last several days, students of Raja Mahendra Singh University of Aligarh have been leading an agitation for scholarships to Dalits.
The university's officials said they will soon find a solution to the issue.
Reacting to the matter, Nagina MP Chandra Shekhar Azad said he was extremely distressed and angered by the "humiliation and discrimination" meted out to Scheduled Caste students.
"The Scheduled Caste students were treated unfairly regarding the right to scholarship, and an attempt was also made to humiliate them," he claimed.
"According to the students, when they approached the Vice Chancellor regarding the rejection of their scholarship forms, they were insulted based on their attire and social background. A student was told that you are a labourer's son; you should have been wearing slippers," Azad said.
Slamming the officials for "inhumane" behaviour, Azad said it violates Articles 15 and 17 of the Indian Constitution.
He urged the UP government and the university administration to conduct a high-level probe into the "rejected" scholarship forms of the Dalit students and an independent judicial investigation into "insults and threats" faced by the Dalit students.
Nagina MP said he will raise the issue in Parliament and streets as well, claiming that it was not just a fight of students, but for the Constitution and social justice.

Justice Sudershan Reddy Vs Radhakrishnan: Southern showdown for VP post

Hyderabad: For the first time since Independence, India's vice-presidential election will see both the ruling and opposition alliances fielding candidates from the South, underscoring the region's importance in national politics. The NDA has nominated C P Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu, while the INDIA bloc has chosen Justice B Sudershan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge from Telangana, as its candidate. Political observers see these choices as more than symbolic. For the BJP, the decision reflects its sharpened focus on Tamil Nadu, where it has long struggled to gain political ground. For the INDIA bloc, nominating Justice Reddy not only highlights the South's growing parliamentary strength but also aligns with its campaign theme of 'saving democracy and the Constitution.' Analysts suggest his legal background and clean image strengthen the bloc's attempt to position itself as the defender of constitutional values. While the office has often seen consensus candidates, unopposed elections have occurred only five times. Eminent leaders such as Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Gopal Swaroop Pathak, Mohammad Hidayatullah, and Shankar Dayal Sharma ascended to the post without contest. Radhakrishnan, notably, was a Telugu from Tamil Nadu and served as the first and second Vice-President. This time, the competition itself carries historical weight, with one candidate hailing from Tamil Nadu and the other from Telangana. Though the NDA enjoys a numerical edge, experts believe the INDIA bloc's choice carries symbolic weight. "The BJP needed to respond to southern concerns, especially in Tamil Nadu, where there is a strong sense of being politically sidelined," said political analyst S Ramakrishna. "For the INDIA bloc, Justice Reddy's nomination not only counters that strategy but also connects with Telangana's political context," he observed. Chief minister A Revanth Reddy had even urged the NDA to nominate Bandaru Dattatreya, suggesting he would have cross-party appeal. Meanwhile, speculation also swirled around leaders such as BJP Rajya Sabha MP K Laxman. Eventually, the BJP settled on Radhakrishnan, while the opposition turned to Justice Reddy, whose judicial career included landmark rulings such as the 2011 judgment disbanding the Salwa Judum militia in Chhattisgarh. Senior analys Professor K Nageswar underlined that the INDIA bloc's choice was less about southern arithmetic and more about projecting credibility. "Justice Reddy brings neutrality and legal gravitas, qualities that match the opposition's campaign narrative," he opined. As voting approaches, regional parties like the TDP, BRS, and YSRCP may face difficult choices, given Justice Reddy's Telangana roots. The TDP has a precedent of refraining from fielding a candidate against former PM PV Narasimha Rao when he contested from Nandyal, despite his being a Congress nominee. Political observers said the contest is not just about numbers. "It reflects a deeper struggle—between constitutional ideals and political strategies, between southern aspirations and national calculations. In that sense, the vice-presidential election of 2025 may well set a new tone for India's evolving political landscape," a senior observer said. Revanth invokes Telugu pride, drums up support for Justice Reddy

Hyderabad: Hours after the INDIA bloc announced retired Supreme Court judge Justice B Sudershan Reddy as its vice-presidential candidate, chief minister A Revanth Reddy Tuesday made an impassioned appeal to Telugu parties across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to rise above politics and rally behind the "son of the soil". "It is an election between saving the Constitution, reservations, and democracy, which Justice Reddy represents, versus CP Radhakrishnan, the BJP-led NDA's candidate who stands for changing the Constitution, abolishing reservations, and undermining democratic principles," Revanth claimed. Emphasising that Justice Reddy was an 'apolitical' candidate, Revanth urged leaders of all parties — TDP, YSRCP, BRS, AIMIM, Jana Sena, Left, and even BJP MPs from both states — to support him. "On behalf of the Telugu people, I appeal to every party to unite on one platform to save the Constitution, reservations and democracy, and to uphold the self-respect of Telugus," he said. "He is a legal luminary and a constitutional expert who will safeguard not only the Constitution and democracy but also reservations, which are under attack from BJP," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Unbeatable Prices on Temu TEMU Shop Now Undo Revanth reminded that Justice Reddy had chaired the independent panel that studied Telangana's caste survey. "If he is elected vice-president, he will play a crucial role in getting 42% reservations for OBCs approved. He knows the survey in depth and has advised the state govt on ensuring justice for backward classes. He will be the strongest voice of OBCs in Parliament," he asserted. To questions on his role in finalising the candidature, Revanth said: "Justice Reddy is INDIA bloc's choice. He gave a presentation on caste survey analysis to MPs in Delhi, and they recognised his worth as a constitutional expert." Though both the NDA and the INDIA bloc candidates are from the South, Revanth accused BJP of trying to deepen north-south divides. "Congress and the INDIA bloc are fighting to unite the country. At least the 60 MPs — 42 in the Lok Sabha and 18 in the Rajya Sabha — from the two Telugu states must come together to support Justice Reddy," he said. BOX: Drawing on NTR's legacy Chief minister A Revanth Reddy invoked former Andhra Pradesh CM N T Rama Rao's statesmanship while appealing to all Telugu parties to back Justice (retd.) B Sudershan Reddy's candidature. "I appeal to Chandrababu Naidu, K Chandrasekhar Rao, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Pawan Kalyan, Asaduddin Owaisi and Left leaders to take inspiration from NTR, who refused to field a candidate against P V Narasimha Rao in Nandyal when Rao became prime minister. Let us protect the pride and honour of the Telugu people in the same spirit," he urged. Revanth said he would "most likely" attend the nomination event of Justice Reddy in Delhi. Assembly passes amendment keeping Greater Bengaluru Authority out of municipal affairs

Bengaluru: The Greater Bengaluru Governance (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which clarifies that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) will not interfere in the functioning of municipal corporations in line with the 74th amendment of the Constitution, was passed in the assembly after much debate. Deputy chief minister and Bengaluru development minister DK Shivakumar , who piloted the bill Monday, said the bill was only to ensure "clarity and prevent disputes in future". "Though the Bill was passed earlier, some people had filed petitions in court," said Shivakumar. "We have now made it clear in this bill that GBA will not interfere in matters of municipal corporations that come under the 74th amendment of the Constitution." "A PIL was filed alleging municipalities were being brought under govt control," he said. "Although the court did not uphold the PIL, we moved this amendment to avoid confusion in future. Municipalities will function independently and will not be under govt control." He went on to say that mayors and corporators elected directly by the people will have complete authority. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Find your car's value online in minutes. Spinny Click Here Undo "Today, we may be at the helm, tomorrow we may not — but there should not be scope for dispute. That is why we removed the provision (allowing govt control)," Shivakumar said. Reiterating his stand, Shivakumar said: "I do not want others to indulge in politics over Bengaluru's future, nor will I. Municipalities will have powers of taxation, financial autonomy, reservation, elections. The 74th amendment is fully protected. Congress will never allow Rajiv Gandhi's historic amendments to be diluted." Insisting that his heart beats for local bodies, Shivakumar said: "When I was urban development minister, we ensured the Belur Declaration along with then revenue minister MY Ghorpade. At that time, each panchayat received only Rs 1 lakh in grants. During SM Krishna's tenure, this was raised to Rs 5 lakh, and later 27 departments were brought under panchayats to empower them." On Satish Reddy's (BJP) claim that certain villages in their constituencies were not included, Shivakumar said: "If we include villages now, panchayat members would automatically become municipal corporators, which could invite objections. Therefore, we will first conduct elections within existing municipal limits, and later, after discussions with all of you, we will decide on expanding boundaries." Highlighting financial imbalances between different zones, Shivakumar said: "Mahadevapura collects the highest tax revenues, whereas other parts of Bengaluru do not generate as much. But one municipality's money cannot be transferred to another — if we do so, it would violate the 74th amendment again. In such cases, the govt must provide financial support. We have only brought this amendment for the welfare of municipalities. Our purpose is to ensure that when other parties form the govt in the future, they cannot misuse it to bring municipalities under govt control."
