Revanth invokes Telugu pride, drums up support for Justice Reddy
Revanth Reddy
Tuesday made an impassioned appeal to Telugu parties across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana to rise above politics and rally behind the "son of the soil".
"It is an election between saving the Constitution, reservations, and democracy, which Justice Reddy represents, versus CP Radhakrishnan, the BJP-led NDA's candidate who stands for changing the Constitution, abolishing reservations, and undermining democratic principles," Revanth claimed.
Emphasising that Justice Reddy was an 'apolitical' candidate, Revanth urged leaders of all parties — TDP, YSRCP, BRS, AIMIM, Jana Sena, Left, and even BJP MPs from both states — to support him.
"On behalf of the Telugu people, I appeal to every party to unite on one platform to save the Constitution, reservations and democracy, and to uphold the self-respect of Telugus," he said.

The CM highlighted Justice Reddy's humble beginnings in a Telugu farming family, and his rise to serve as chief justice of various high courts and later as a judge of the Supreme Court. "He is a legal luminary and a constitutional expert who will safeguard not only the Constitution and democracy but also reservations, which are under attack from BJP," he said.

Revanth reminded that Justice Reddy had chaired the independent panel that studied Telangana's caste survey. "If he is elected vice-president, he will play a crucial role in getting 42% reservations for OBCs approved. He knows the survey in depth and has advised the state govt on ensuring justice for backward classes. He will be the strongest voice of OBCs in Parliament," he asserted.
To questions on his role in finalising the candidature, Revanth said: "Justice Reddy is INDIA bloc's choice.
He gave a presentation on caste survey analysis to MPs in Delhi, and they recognised his worth as a constitutional expert."
Though both the NDA and the INDIA bloc candidates are from the South, Revanth accused BJP of trying to deepen north-south divides. "Congress and the INDIA bloc are fighting to unite the country. At least the 60 MPs — 42 in the Lok Sabha and 18 in the Rajya Sabha — from the two Telugu states must come together to support Justice Reddy," he said.

Chief minister A Revanth Reddy invoked former Andhra Pradesh CM N T Rama Rao's statesmanship while appealing to all Telugu parties to back Justice (retd.) B Sudershan Reddy's candidature. "I appeal to Chandrababu Naidu, K Chandrasekhar Rao, Jagan Mohan Reddy, Pawan Kalyan, Asaduddin Owaisi and Left leaders to take inspiration from NTR, who refused to field a candidate against P V Narasimha Rao in Nandyal when Rao became prime minister.
Let us protect the pride and honour of the Telugu people in the same spirit," he urged. Revanth said he would "most likely" attend the nomination event of Justice Reddy in Delhi.

‘We have to raise voice against forces continuing with defaming Dharmasthala'

Nagaraj Shetty on Wednesday called upon people to raise their voice against forces that continue to defame Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara temple and pattadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala D. While asking the State government not to bow down to pressure and pro-people organisations, they asked the government to allow SIT to do a comprehensive investigation into the complaint. Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) said that 'The Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025' introduced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in States and obstruct their functioning. 'According to this Bill, if a Minister is sentenced to five years on any charge and remains in jail for 30 days, he will have to step down from the post. Obviously, the Prime Minister or the BJP ministers will not be sent to jail. This provision is a well-planned conspiracy to destabilise non-BJP governments and not to allow them to function,'Mr. Bhattacharya said. He alleged that scams are going on as the names of lakhs of people are found without addresses, and the ECI is calling them homeless voters. He also flagged the objections raised by the political parties and Booth Level Agents (BLAs), which have been denied by the EC, saying the political parties have registered no such claims. Attacking the Nitish Kumar-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the State, the CPI-(ML) leader said that the government has been a burden for twenty years and had to be uprooted from the power.

In Moscow, Jaishankar raises challenge posed by tariff to India-Russia trade, calls for early conclusion of India-Eurasian Economic Union FTA
In the backdrop of U.S. President Donald Trump's imposition of penalty tariff on India, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) in Moscow raised the challenge posed by 'tariff and non-tariff trade barriers' before Russia-India trade and called for 'early conclusion' of a Free Trade Agreement among India and the countries of the Eurasian region. Mr. Jaishankar made the remarks during the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Government Commission for Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) where the Russian side was being led by First Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Denis Manturov. Delivering his opening remarks Mr. Jaishankar said, 'tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, removing bottlenecks in logistics, promoting connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor, the Northern Sea Route and the Chennai-Vladivostok Corridor, effecting payment mechanisms smoothly' are the main issues before the IRIGC-TEC. He further said that Wednesday's meeting in Moscow also finalized the terms of reference of the India-Eurasian Economic Union Free Trade Agreement of which Russia has been a leading proponent as it aims at removing obstacles for overland trade among Russia, China, India and the Central Asian countries. '..we are all acutely aware that we are meeting in the backdrop of a complex geopolitical situation. Our leaders remain closely and regularly engaged,' said Mr Jaishankar indirectly referring to the trade-related anxieties in India-U.S. relation. He also raised the issue of trade imbalance in India-Russia trade that has expanded in the past few years as India's trade with Russia grew from $13 billion in 2021 to $68 billion in 2024-'25. India-Russia trade has risen sharply after Russia was hit with Western sanctions following the crisis in Ukraine. Bulk of this trade is in hydrocarbon that Russia supplies to India. As a result the earlier trade imbalance of $ 6.6 billion has risen to $58.9 billion. 'So, we need to address that urgently,' said Mr Jaishankar in his remarks.
