Surprising Georgia Bulldog named as preseason first-team All-American
Surprisingly, Georgia punter Brett Thorson made the first-team. Thorson's inclusion is not shocking because of his level of skill, but because he is recovering from knee surgery after he suffered a knee injury (to his non-kicking leg) in Georgia's 2024 SEC championship win over Texas.
"He (Brett Thorson) won't be ready at fall camp, but we think he'll be ready by the first game," said Kirby Smart back in April. Smart has not confirmed the exact injury Thorson suffered, but it is suspected he tore his ACL. If Thorson returns for the start of the 2025 college football season, then he will have returned to action in less than 10 months. If Thorson is unable to play, then sophomore Drew Miller, who played in Georgia's Sugar Bowl loss to Notre Dame, is expected to start.
AP named Thorson as a second-team All-American for his excellent 2024 season. Last year, Thorson averaged 47. 6 yards per punt and pinned opponents inside the 20 yard line on 22 different occasions. He had a career-high 18 punts go over 50 yards.
Thorson is expected to be part of an elite Georgia special teams unit in 2025. The Bulldogs return starting kicker Peyton Woodring and long snapper Beau Gardner.
Woodring made 21 of 23 kicks in 2024 including nine of his 11 attempts over 40 yards.

The Lake Charles, Louisiana, native is entering his fifth year at LSU and is an early choice to be a first-round selection in the 2026 NFL Draft. Sellers was a first-year starter last season with the Gamecocks after redshirting in 2023. He had over 2,500 yards passing with 18 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2024 while rushing for 674 yards and seven more scores. This earned him Football Writers Association of America National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year honors. As for Lagway, he was selected to the FWAA Freshman All-American Team in 2024 as a true freshman. He appeared in all 13 games for the Gators, throwing for just under 2,000 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Canada fell to Germany, 104-88, in the final game of Group B in the first stage of the FIBA U19 World Cup on Tuesday, but Florida redshirt freshman Olivier Rioux had arguably his best game of the tournament. The opposite was true on Wednesday as Canada bounced back for a Round of 16 win over Mali, 100-75, while Rioux struggled with foul trouble. The 7-foot-9 phenom has drawn a ton of attention since joining the Florida Gators, and these are the first games fans can see him in action on the court. Rioux is still very raw and learning to manipulate his large body and long limbs without fouling too often. He's not likely to play a ton during the 2025-26 college basketball season, outside of non-conference blowout wins, so these are valuable minutes for someone with an infinitely high ceiling — wordplay not intended. Game 3: Canada vs Germany (L, 104-88) Rioux scored four points on 2-of-2 shooting in the game against Germany. He played earlier than normal, seeing minutes in the first quarter. He positioned himself well on the offensive boards, tipping a missed shot back in for half his box score. That's Rioux's only offensive rebound of the tournament so far, and it's a nice sign to see. There's some Florida, Todd Golden sequencing in there if you look closely enough. That's the kind of film that will get him more minutes next season Game 4: Canada vs Mali (W, 100-75) Four personal fouls limited Rioux to just five minutes on the court Wednesday. There wasn't much room for debate on any of the calls, making this a learning lesson for the oversized center. SEC players are going to take advantage of a big player who doesn't know how to get out of the way. Rioux often goes forward while defending the shot instead of up, which is the only direction he needs to go at 7-foot-9.
