Video of Iconic Algerian Statue 'Ain El Fouara' Being Vandalized Sparks Public Controversy
A shocking act of vandalism has reignited debate in Algeria after a man was caught on video damaging the country's most famous public statue, the 'Ain El Fouara' fountain in downtown Setif.
Security forces quickly intervened to stop the man and arrested him on-site.
Footage circulating widely online shows the individual climbing the fountain and smashing part of the statue's face before officers pulled him down amid resistance. Eyewitnesses gathered around the square, expressing a mix of outrage and support, with some residents condemning the act as cultural destruction, while others framed it as a form of protest against the colonial-era artwork.
The Ain El Fouara statue, depicting a woman from Setif, was created by French sculptor Francis de Saint-Vidal and first unveiled in 1898. Originally displayed at the Louvre Museum to mark the 10th anniversary of the Eiffel Tower, the statue was later gifted to Setif by the city's French military governor, where it was mounted atop a fountain with four water outlets.
Over its 127-year history, the statue has been repeatedly targeted. In 1997, a bomb placed beneath the monument shattered it completely, but it was restored within 24 hours. Nearly a decade later, in 2006, a man struck the statue's face with a hammer, damaging its left cheek and nose. Further attacks in 2017 and again in 2022 left visible damage to its face and torso, prompting costly restoration efforts.
The most recent attack once again spotlights the ongoing tension between cultural heritage and historical memory in Algeria, where some view the statue as an enduring reminder of French colonialism, while others see it as a landmark tied to the city's identity and tourism.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is in custody and will face charges of vandalism and destruction of public property. Restoration efforts are expected to follow, though public debate over the statue's fate is likely to intensify.

Tesla Ordered to Pay $242 Mln in Florida Autopilot Crash Case
Israa Farhan A jury in Florida has ordered electric car giant Tesla to pay $242 million in damages over a 2019 fatal crash that involved its Autopilot feature. The case centred around a collision in Key Largo that resulted in the death of Nibel Benavides Leon and serious injuries to her friend, Dillon Angulo. The plaintiffs claimed Tesla's Autopilot system was partially responsible for the crash. According to court documents, the Tesla, driven by George McGee, veered into an oncoming Chevrolet vehicle, allegedly due to a malfunction or misuse of the Autopilot system. The jury found Tesla partially liable and awarded punitive damages of $200 million, in addition to $59 million to Leon's family and $70 million to Angulo's. Because Tesla was found to be one-third responsible, the final amount payable by the company was reduced to $242 million, according to attorney Darren Jeffrey Russo, who represented both families. Tesla plans to appeal the decision. Its legal team argued the crash was caused by driver error, claiming the driver was speeding, pressing the accelerator pedal, and distracted while searching for a dropped phone. In a statement, Tesla emphasized that no vehicle in 2019 could have avoided the collision, insisting the incident had no connection to its Autopilot feature. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Prosecutors call for Morocco's Achraf Hakimi to face rape trial - Africa
French prosecutors on Friday called for Paris Saint-Germain star Achraf Hakimi to face trial for the alleged rape of a woman in 2023 which the Moroccan international denies. The Nanterre prosecutor's office told AFP that they had requested that the investigating judge refer the rape charge to a criminal court. "It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order," the prosecutor's office told AFP in a statement. Hakimi, 26, played a major role in PSG's run to their first Champions League title, the full-back scoring the opener in the 5-0 rout of Inter Milan in the final in May. Hakimi, who helped Morocco to their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup, was charged in March, 2023 with raping a 24-year-old woman. Hakimi allegedly paid for his accuser to travel to his home on February 25, 2023, in the Paris suburb of Boulogne-Billancourt while his wife and children were away on holiday. The woman went to a police station following the encounter alleging rape and was questioned by police. Although the woman refused to make a formal accusation, prosecutors decided to press charges against the player. She told police at the time that she had met Hakimi in January 2023 on Instagram. On the night in question she said she had travelled to his house in a taxi paid for by Hakimi. She told police Hakimi had started kissing her and making non consensual sexual advances, before raping her, a police source told AFP at the time. She said she managed to break free to text a friend who came to pick her up. Contacted by AFP after Friday's development Hakimi's lawyer Fanny Colin described the call by prosecutors for a trial as "incomprehensible and senseless in light of the case's elements". "We, along with Achraf Hakimi, remain as calm as we were at the start of the proceedings. "If these requisitions were to be followed, we would obviously pursue all avenues of appeal," she added. "My client welcomes this news with immense relief," Rachel-Flore Pardo, the lawyer representing the woman, told AFP. Hakimi, born in Madrid, came through the youth system at Real Madrid before joining Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in 2018. He went on to make 73 appearances for the German club. He moved to Inter Milan in 2020 and then on to PSG in 2021 where he has established himself as an integral part of the team. In Qatar, Hakimi was a cornerstone of the Morocco team that became the first African or Arab nation to reach the semi-finals of a World Cup.
