SIBU (April 29): JY One Stop Services & Co and Hilltop Engineering Sdn Bhd have contributed 10 units of laptop computers to Destiny For Children (DFC), a school that caters to undocumented children.
In her remarks, DFC treasurer Anne Lau expresses gratitude to Persatuan Kebajikan Bantuan Komuniti Terpinggir (Bantu Sarawak) for initiating the move to help find the donors for the centre.
'We are truly thankful to Bantu Sarawak and the donors. With these computers, we will embark on a journey to enhance our curriculum, engaging trainers to educate our teachers, who will in turn impart this knowledge to our students,' she said in her speech for the presentation event today.
The DFC currently have 10 teachers and 135 undocumented children.
Adding on, Lau said the students would not only learn basic IT skills, but also get into designs and even participate in social media activities.
'Education is evolving rapidly, with technology at its core. In this era of artificial intelligence (AI), it is crucial to equip our young learners with IT skills to navigate the competitive world awaiting them post-graduation.
'By bridging the digital divide, we aim to empower the children with the necessary skills to thrive in a technology-driven society, ensuring their success as they transition into the workforce.
'So, let us all extend our heartfelt appreciation to Bantu Sarawak for their unwavering support and dedication to fostering a brighter future for these underserved children.'
Bantu Sarawak, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded by Jeffry Ngui, aims to raise funds, help and identify, and provide assistance to the neglected communities.
Ngui, in his brief address, said the programme for DFC was one of its Project Noah's Ark beneficiaries.
'We have already helped build a computer lab for DFC and hopefully, we could continue to look into areas at the DFC that need to be upgraded.'
Also attending the event were DFC advisor Ting Wei Ping and Bantu Sarawak Sibu coordinator Tan Leong Wee. donation laptop private company undocumented children

Dr Sim urges community leaders to instil local values in Sarawak's youth
(From fourth left) Lau, Dr Sim and Hieng Wuong officiate at the event. SIBU (June 9): Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian wants community leaders to instil local values and culture in Sarawak's younger generation towards nation-building. The Local Government and Housing Minister expressed his worries about the implementation of the state's free education policy starting next year, particularly for students pursuing their studies at Australian-based Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus. 'Between 3,000 and 5,000 Sarawak students will receive free education at the University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) and Swinburne next year because we want high education standards, particularly Australian education. 'I am more worried for Swinburne because I am not sure if we are going to teach our students Australian education with Sarawak values. 'It is very important; otherwise, we will never teach Sarawak values to those (who will be) serving Sarawak,' he said when officiating the Sibu Chinese Community Leaders Association 20th anniversary celebration and 11th committee installation here last night. Dr Sim also expressed concern that students might migrate to Australia, enticed by well-paying jobs after their graduation, as their degrees are recognised by the country. 'It would be like we are preparing 5,000 talents every year for migration. 'This is why it is important for us, community leaders at the forefront of Sarawak government, to teach them local values. 'It is similarly impoprtant for the people to maintain unity, stability and working together for shared prosperity, especially as Sarawak's economy is expected to continue flourishing in 2030,' he added. Meanwhile, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau was elected president of the association for the 2025-2026 term, with Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai, Pemanca Liong Khing Hee, Kapitan Fung Tat Shen, Penghulu Lau Hieng Wuong and Kapitan Ting Hua Chuan as vice presidents. Kapitan Sim Tang Fei became secretary, joined by Penghulu Lim Kuah Liew as assistant secretary. Penghulu Yong Kin Sung took on the role of treasurer, assisted by Penghulu Tiew Siik Nieng. Filling other key positions were Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong (welfare officer), Kapitan Wong Chiew Sieng (assistant welfare officer), Kapitan Low Muong Ing (general affairs officer), Kapitan Lau Sei Kwang (assistant general affairs officer), Kapitan So Teck Kee (cultural officer) and Penghulu Kong Sien Min (assistant cultural officer). The committee included Kapitan Ling Hua Wee, Kapitan Chua Kim Seng, Kapitan Wong Jont Kiong, Penghulu Wong Ung, Kapitan Connie Loh and Kapitan Peter Lau were the committee members. Among those present were Dr Sim's wife Datin Amar Enn Ong and Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang.

Lilly's obesity drug sales rise 60% in India amid rising demand
NEW DELHI: Eli Lilly & Co. increased sales of weight-loss and diabetes drug Mounjaro 60 in India in May from April in its second full month of being on offer in the South Asian country, which has the world's third-highest number of obese people. The US drugmaker sold 126 million rupees (US$1.5 million) worth of the injections last month, according to market analysis firm Pharmarack Technologies. Sales of its five milligram version more than doubled to about 75 million rupees, while revenue from the 2.5 mg shot was 51 million rupees. "The patient number may have actually doubled' in May from April, Pharmarack Vice President Sheetal Sapale told Bloomberg News. The demand is gradually rising and should continue, she said. Newer patients are being introduced with the lower dose and upgraded to five-mg injections after four weeks, according to Sapale. The increase in sales reflects the need for anti-obesity solutions in the vast market in India, where Danish rival Novo Nordisk A/S is also expected to launch soon. The country's generic drugmakers are awaiting the expiration of some patents from next year to unleash a flurry of copycat treatments. On Tuesday, Biocon Ltd. received approval for Liraglutide, a generic version of Novo Nordisk's type-2 diabetes and anti-obesity drug Victoza. India has about 100 million people living with diabetes and obesity each, Eli Lilly said earlier this year. - Bloomberg

SANDAKAN: Sabah Progressive Party Vice President cum Tanjung Papat Division Chairman Lau Chi Keong wants the government to immediately draft a Sandakan Recovery Plan to address its long-standing development challenges. The proposed plan focuses on infrastructure improvements, establishing an Urban Transformation Centre (UTC), developing tourism packages and creating mechanisms to retain talented youths to pull Sabah's second-largest city out of its prolonged developmental stagnation. Advertisement Lau said the Sabah Government should prioritise addressing water supply, electricity and road issues that have plagued Sandakan for years, while making it a priority to set up a UTC to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery. He also suggested creating a small and medium enterprise incubation centre to encourage local entrepreneurship and integrate industry supply chains. 'We need to be more proactive in tourism by developing eco-tourism, historical and cultural tours, and food trails, positioning Sandakan as an international transit tourism city,' Lau said in a statement. Lau pointed out Sandakan's unique natural resources and ecological landscape, including the Kinabatangan River, tropical rainforests and conservation areas, which have high potential for development as international eco-tourism destinations. Addressing local economic recovery, Lau said skilled worker migration must be tackled first. He called on elected representatives to establish technology and skills training centres to enhance youth competitiveness. Lau noted that basic infrastructure issues in Sandakan remain unchanged from previous administrations to the present.
