MAIPk allocates RM5.5 million to boost asnaf entrepreneurship programmes
Its chief executive officer Syamsul Hazeman Md Salleh said this included the Asnaf Empowerment Programme (Proper A), which began in 2016, as well as the Usahawan Payung Asnaf (Upaya) programme, a new initiative introduced this year.
He said MAIPk had consistently introduced dynamic approaches for Proper A, including mobile business concepts with full support from franchise brands.
"Every year, we renew these programmes, and what we are doing this time is a little different– providing participants with equipment in the form of mobile services, especially for hair-cutting and mobile phone repair services.
"This mobile service is the result of a pilot project we ran last year, which yielded very good returns for the participants.
"We see the market demand still exists, which is why we are expanding the programme, including the provision of motorcycles," he said.
He was speaking after presenting business equipment to Proper A 2025 entrepreneurs and launching the Upaya Programme at Galasa Vetro Hall here today.
The event also saw the presentation of 50 motorcycles to 25 participants in the mobile phone repair course and 25 more in the hair-cutting course.
Syamsul Hazeman said the Upaya programme had helped 60 asnaf participants conduct business activities in the food sector, with participants receiving assistance in the form of equipment, training, monitoring and continuous guidance.
He said Upaya is MAIPk's newest initiative to help small traders striving to generate higher earnings.
"Upaya is a programme where we collaborate with brands already established in the market, with MAIPk providing participants initial capital, business premises and guidance on how to run the business.
"From there, we equip participants with skills to manage finances and marketing, and we ensure they are placed in locations with little competition so they can penetrate new markets.
"So far, four companies have collaborated with us, but moving forward, we may not necessarily 'copy' the same programme because MAIPk wants to avoid market saturation or oversupply of the same products," he said.
He added that besides the main focus on developing new entrepreneurs through Proper A, MAIPk was also organising short-term programmes aimed at empowering entrepreneurs, with a target of 500 participants.
"These asnaf entrepreneurs will undergo various courses such as financial management, digital marketing, halal certification, entrepreneurial appearance and image, motivational seminars and entrepreneurial direction, as well as mindset transformation motivation programs," he said.
He added that MAIPk was also expanding its entrepreneurship programmes to vulnerable groups, including female inmates of Batu Gajah Correctional Centre and residents of Amanjaya House.
"For female inmates at Batu Gajah Correctional Centre, they are given training in food manufacturing, bakery and pastry so they can earn an income after release.
"Similarly, residents of Amanjaya House may gain skills in hair-cutting and reflexology to help them build new lives after treatment at the rehabilitation centre," he added.

MAIPk allocates RM5.5m for Asnaf empowerment programmes in Perak
IPOH: The Perak Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIPk) has set aside RM5.5 million this year to fund two key initiatives—the Asnaf Economic Empowerment Programme (Proper A) and the Asnaf Entrepreneur Umbrella Programme (UPAYA). CEO Syamsul Hazeman Md Salleh said Proper A now adopts a dynamic model focusing on four sectors: smartphone repairs, mobile hairdressing, coffee franchises, and Roti Kaya Junus outlets. Participants receive RM8,000 to RM14,000 in financial aid, tailored to their business type, alongside training. 'Mobile business participants get a motorcycle and starter kit, while franchisees gain full brand support to ease operations,' he said after launching UPAYA. Monitoring will span three to six months to ensure effective fund utilisation. Under UPAYA, MAIPk has aided 60 Asnaf food entrepreneurs with equipment, training, and mentorship. 'This lifts small-scale traders, resolves financial hurdles, and boosts household incomes,' Syamsul added. The council aims to break poverty cycles and foster sustainable livelihoods. - Bernama

Nga: Siti Khadijah market to boost tourism by 2026
KOTA BHARU: The iconic Siti Khadijah Market is undergoing a major upgrade and is set to become a key tourist destination in conjunction with Visit Malaysia Year 2026. Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said the upgrading works are expected to be fully completed this year and will offer greater comfort for visitors and 1,500 local traders operating there. He said the project includes refurbishing public toilets into clean, fragrant and tourist-friendly facilities, installing new electrical wiring, repainting the building and enhancing the interior structure. "I would like to thank the Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for allocating RM5.5 million in special funds to help the Kota Bharu Municipal Council (MPKB) implement this project. "My ministry has added another RM1.5 million, bringing the total allocation for the Siti Khadijah Market upgrading project to RM7 million," he told a press conference after visiting the market here today. Nga said the market transformation is part of the MADANI government's efforts to boost the local economy through tourism, in line with the aspirations of the MADANI Economy framework and the Visit Malaysia Year campaign. He also visited the MyKiosk project, a joint initiative between the Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) and MPKB, where all 17 kiosks have been fully occupied by local entrepreneurs. "A burger seller told me he now earns more than RM10,000 a month. "We charge a very affordable rent of just RM150 per month, or RM5 a day. In fact, KPKT is offering six months of free rent to help them kickstart their businesses," he said. Nga added that MyKiosk utilises environmentally friendly solar energy, helping traders save on electricity costs while supporting the government's goal of developing low-carbon cities. To date, KPKT has assisted over 7,000 families, including B40 groups, roadside traders, and previously unlicensed hawkers, who are now registered and operating legally. Nga also congratulated and thanked MPKB management for their commitment to implementing pro-people initiatives in Kelantan, in line with the government's efforts to improve the well-being of the rakyat. — BERNAMA
