Wigan Warriors served further notice there could be a new name at the top of Womens' Super League this season with an emphatic statement win against back-to-back champions York Valkyrie.Six days after booking a place in the Womens' Challenge Cup final with a 44-14 semi-final win over Leeds Rhinos, Denis Betts' side left the reigning champions on the canvas at the Brick Community Stadium.In an explosive first half, the 2023 and 2024 champions Valkyrie conceded five tries as Wigan dominated possession and made best use of it.It was 13 minutes before Molly Jones went over after a break and assist from Ellise Derbyshire, but Wigan had another through Eva Hunter four minutes later, and a third after Tiana Power's dazzling run from the right flank to score.If it was an opening period that left York stunned, a try from Grace Banks, with a strong finish through two tackles, and an Emily Veivers score after she reacted quickest to a loose ball a minute from the break left them flattened.
Izzy Rowe's boot proved reliable with four goals for the extras.The only respite to the relentless waves of Wigan pressure came during a long injury break as medics attended to York centre Tamzin Renouf, who was stretchered off after 35 minutes.While there was later positive news about Renouf the half-time break did nothing to blunt the Warriors hunger, and Mia Atherton posted an enormous hit on Izzy Brennan straight from the restart.Shania Power matched her sister's first-half try on 51 minutes and Banks' claimed a second, both converted, to put Wigan 40-0 to the good in the closing stages.A consolation try from Savannah Andrade three minutes before the buzzer with Ellie Williamson adding two points allowed the visitors some measure of respectability.But it could not mask the fact that the tectonic plates have clearly shifted in the close season as Wigan look to add a second Women's Super League title following a first and only win in 2018.

David 'Syd' Lawrence: Race against time to write autobiography
The autobiography of former England and Gloucestershire cricketer David 'Syd' Lawrence has been described as one of "resilience and character".Written in collaboration with Dean Wilson, it was a race against time to gather the story of the 61-year-old after he was diagnosed with motor neuron disease (MND) and faced losing his teammates and family joined Mr Lawrence at a book launch and charity cricket match in Downend, Bristol, on Wilson said: "We knew that he'd be losing his voice at some stage and his voice is something that was really characterful for him - it was part of who he was." The book, In Syd's Voice - The Extraordinary Life of Syd Lawrence, shares the highest points of Mr Lawrence's career and intimate moments and memories of his life. He took 625 wickets in 280 matches during a 16-year career at Gloucestershire that ended in 1988, he became the first British-born black cricketer to represent England, he went on to earn five Test match caps for his retiring from cricket, Mr Lawrence became a nightclub owner and amateur bodybuilder. He was diagnosed with MND last year and is now unable to speak or walk."It's a story about resilience, actually a story about character, and he had them both," Mr Wilson said."We did most of the interviews in October time last year and every day at 10am we would talk." Mr Lawrence was joined by his son Buster at the event who said: "It was quite an emotional moment for Dad seeing the book, he put a lot of work into it with Dean Wilson."Me and my dad have always been close so there's not much I don't know, but there's a few stories in there that came as a surprise."It was a very special moment to show him the book for the first time."He also spoke about bringing the date of his wedding day forward to allow his father to speak at the celebration."It's actually probably one of the last times Dad would speak quite clearly on his own without the assistance of machinery or anyone else," he said."It was timed perfectly, it meant a lot to me and I know it meant a lot to my Dad." Two teams full of famous faces - all friends of Mr Lawrence - took to the pitch to raise money for him and the MND fast bowler Courtney Walsh described how he formed a formidable partnership with Mr Lawrence at the height of their careers."I think we sent a lot of shockwaves through the county circuit when we started bowling together," he said."He knows I'm not going to let him down so I'm just going to do what he always expects me to do, but the only sad part is that he won't be at the other end."

TOTTENHAM have been rejected by former Premier League boss Roberto De Zerbi, according to reports. Spurs brutally sacked Ange Postecoglou last night - just two weeks after he lifted the Europa League to end the club's 17-year trophy drought. 4 The club have been sounding out alternatives since the final in Bilbao and De Zerbi was approached. However, journalist Fabrizio Romano claims he rejected Spurs in favour of staying at Marseille. De Zerbi quit Brighton after two years in the job last summer and then penned a three-year contract with the French giants. Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Fulham manager Marco Silva are the leading candidates to replace Postecoglou. Frank is the front-runner and he reportedly has a £10million release clause in his deal. But reports from The I Paper suggest him moving from West to North London is far from done. Brentford are ready to hear from Spurs but have so far not been contacted. There is still a strong possibility Silva lands the job and his representatives have been spoken to. 4 Though Fulham are yet to receive a formal approach from Spurs. Ecclestone to take break to 'prioritise wellbeing'
England spinner Sophie Ecclestone will take a break from domestic cricket as she manages a quad injury and to "prioritise her wellbeing". Ecclestone, 26, was left out of England's first squad under new coach Charlotte Edwards because she was recovering from a knee injury. She played for the UP Warriorz in India's Women's Premier League in February but was sidelined for two months and missed the beginning of Lancashire's domestic season. The left-arm spinner has since played two one-day matches and six T20s for her county, but was withdrawn from their match against Hampshire on Tuesday because of the quad problem. At this stage, Ecclestone, who is the number one-ranked ODI bowler in the world, remains available for England's white-ball series against India, which begins on 28 June at Trent Bridge. "Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but more importantly she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself," said Edwards. "We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. "We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that." England insisted Ecclestone's omission from the squad for the ongoing West Indies series was not related to the controversy that overshadowed an awful Ashes tour of Australia earlier this year. During England's 16-0 series defeat Ecclestone refused to take part in a TV interview conducted by former team-mate Alex Hartley, following her criticism of England's fitness during the T20 World Cup in have comfortably beaten West Indies, winning both the one-day international and T20 series, but are expected to face a much greater challenge against India, who are also hosting the 50-over World Cup at the end of September. "Mental health is so important," Hartley told BBC Test Match Special during the final ODI against West Indies at Taunton."If she [Ecclestone] feels she needs a refresh and if she's going to miss a series or a bit of domestic cricket, but it means she's fit for the World Cup, ultimately that's what we want."
