Chief Jiba Magwaza calls for action on social ills in KwaDukuza

The Citizen19-07-2025
Chief Jiba Magwaza voiced deep concern over unemployment, drug abuse and undocumented foreigners during his first official imbizo, held on Sunday at the Shakaskraal Community Hall.
Addressing residents from Nkobongo, Shayamoya and Etete – townships under the Magwaza chieftaincy – Chief Magwaza noted that this was his first opportunity to formally engage with his community since assuming the role after his mother's death.
He expressed his intention to visit all areas under his leadership moving forward.
'I truly value and appreciate the development taking place along our coastline, it is much needed. However, the high number of unemployed youth in these areas is deeply concerning. How can we have so much development, yet so many people remain without work?
'We also cannot ignore the number of undocumented people in our areas. We must address the issue of people entering and leaving our communities without regulation,' said Chief Magwaza.
During the imbizo, attendees were also given a historical overview of the Magwaza chieftaincy, which was established in the 1890s.
The gathering took an emotional turn when induna Nduli recounted the forced removals of families from their land in Shakaskraal and surrounding areas during the apartheid era.
'It was a brutal time. Tractors would arrive without warning and farmers would begin ploughing around your home. You'd be told to leave everything behind. Your house would then be turned into a compound for farmworkers.
'I witnessed that and it still pains me to this day. I hope that one day, whether I am alive or not, the Magwaza chieftaincy reclaims its land. It was taken in the most inhumane way,' said Nduli.

Malema: 'EFF has never been in the pockets of criminals'

EFF leader Julius Malema firmly denied that criminals have captured the Economic Freedom Fighters. Speaking on Saturday at the party's 3rd Central Command Team meeting of the 3rd National People's Assembly in Bela-Bela, Limpopo, Malema said the EFF has consistently been at the forefront of demanding accountability from the state. The Central Command Team is the EFF's highest decision-making body between the National People's Assemblies. According to IOL , Malema criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa for allegedly failing to act on warnings from the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). He said the EFF called for an inquiry after NPA head Shamila Batohi claimed 'sinister forces' had captured the institution. 'It was the EFF that wrote to the president, demanding an inquiry into Batohi's claims. Instead of acting, he coerced her into withdrawing her remarks, calling it a misuse of language,' Malema said. Malema also pointed to the EFF's 2024 parliamentary motion to establish an ad hoc committee to investigate extortion rings targeting businesses and residents. He said the ANC, DA, and IFP, which govern the provinces worst hit by extortion, the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and KwaZulu-Natal, rejected the proposal. 'Extortionists and criminal syndicates celebrated that day, as their political protection worked in their favour,' Malema said. Malema praised KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi for exposing the links between criminal cartels and political figures. 'It took Mkhwanazi breaking ranks for the truth the EFF has always spoken to finally be taken seriously,' he said. Malema reiterated that the EFF remains independent. 'We have never been and will never be in the pockets of criminals. When we gave other parties the chance to stand against crime, they refused,' he said. Malema reaffirmed his support for Mkhwanazi and said the EFF would welcome him to join the party if he loses his position in the SAPS. New police minister warns against 'shoot to kill' tactics

Newly appointed Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia, has warned against the abuse of police power and the use of deadly force, stating it could lead to tragic incidents like the Marikana massacre or the killing of Andries Tatane during a service delivery protest. Speaking shortly after his swearing-in at the Union Buildings in Pretoria on Friday, Cachalia rejected any 'shoot to kill' approach within the South African Police Service (SAPS). Cachalia, a constitutional law expert and former chair of the National Anti-Corruption Council, said he intends to serve with integrity and independence. 'I'm not driven by ambition or political ambition. I've been given a task, and I'm going to tackle that task without fear or favour, subject, of course, to the President's guidance as a member of Cabinet.' Cachalia faced political pressure and ongoing allegations of corruption within the SAPS but maintained a calm, resolute stance, saying external noise would not distract him. 'I understand the moment the country is in and the awesome weight of the responsibility I carry, along with others in government,' he added. Cachalia said a key part of his agenda would be addressing police conduct and reforming accountability systems. He intends to meet National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola on Thursday to discuss operational matters and existing task teams. 'It wouldn't be appropriate to speak before that discussion,' he said. As the outgoing chairperson of the National Anti-Corruption Council, whose term ends this month, Cachalia pledged to advance the council's recommendations in his new role. 'I'm now in a better position than I was as chairperson to take those recommendations forward, and I certainly will,' he said. He plans to bring the council and SAPS leadership together to align on reforms, particularly focusing on whistleblower protection and internal accountability mechanisms. Cachalia also plans to work closely with Justice Minister Ronald Lamola, stating that the fight against corruption must be a joint effort. 'The recommendations impact both of our portfolios,' he said. Cachalia addressed speculation about his status and confirmed, 'Today I was appointed minister, not acting.' 'Go to hell': Gayton claps back at Malema's legal threat

Gayton McKenzie has clapped back at Julius Malema's threat to sue him for defamation after he labelled the Economic Freedom Fighter leader 'stupid' and a 'bank robber' in a recent Facebook Live rant. The Patriotic Alliance leader – the Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture – also claimed that the EFF was 'in ICU'. Speaking to EWN, Julius Malema responded to the comments made by Gayton McKenzie, whom he labelled a 'jailbird'. He said: 'I never went to jail, I never got arrested for stealing. I've never robbed anything in my entire life. Never.' 'I've never engaged with them like that. Because I showed Kenny [Kunene] the door.' Malema threatened to sue Gayton for 'damaging my image'. He continued: 'I will take him on. Don't lie about me… If you become personal, I will sue you. I don't play games.' On his X account, Gayton responded to Malema's legal threat, posting 'This one thinks he has the sole mandate to insult people. Go to hell'. In 2021, Malema sued Gayton McKenzie's right-hand man, Kenny Kunene, after the latter called him a 'cockroach' and a 'frog' during a media briefing. At the time, Kunene – a former EFF ambassador – said: 'Julius is just an irritating cockroach that now I must deal with publicly.' 'Julius is a criminal, and I'm going to show South Africans the crimes he has been involved in. I'm going to tell South Africans why I left the EFF because of this cockroach. So, I'm going to deal with this cockroach because we have given him time and respect'. In 2023, the Johannesburg High Court ordered Kunene to publicly apoligise to Malema, which he refused to do. He has since applied for leave to appeal the judgement. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1 .
