
Lidl is making a huge change to self-service checkouts and it will be quicker to shop
The budget supermarket is introducing a self-scanning feature on its app, Lidl Plus, which will allow shoppers to scan their items on their phones as they go around the store.

Customers will be able to track how much they are spending and saving on their products in real time, while it will also allow for faster checkout at the self-service tills.
They can also load their items into their shopping bags as they go around the store.
Lidl is the latest supermarket to bring in a self-scanning feature, with Sainsbury's offering similar technology for its Nectar customers, along with Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and M&S.
The scheme is set to be trialled in four Lidl stores from September, ahead of a phased rollout next year.
The retailer has not yet confirmed which stores will be taking part in the trial.
Lidl boss Ryan McDonnell said: 'This marks a significant leap forward in our digital evolution.
" Integrated into Lidl Plus, it's designed to offer customers a smarter, faster, and more flexible way to shop.
"We're investing heavily in technologies that simplify everyday life, while always offering our customers different options to suit their shopping preferences.
"Whether customers prefer the traditional checkout, self-service or self scanning, at Lidl, they are always in control of how they shop.'
The supermarket last year brought in changes to its self-service checkouts, including new security measures, as it invests more in in-store technology.
Stores now have a one-way barrier at the exit where customers must scan their receipt before they can leave the store.
Meanwhile, the majority of checkouts are now card only, with just six cash and card counters available.
Lidl also launched its first click and collect service in April for Lidl Plus users, making it easier for shoppers to snap up middle aisle bargains.
What is Lidl Plus?
Lidl Plus is Lidl's loyalty scheme and has 100million users across the world, according to the supermarket.
The rewards scheme gives shoppers a host of offers including multi-buy deals and exclusive discounts on certain products.
Customers can also earn freebies if they spend a certain amount in shops each week.
For example, anyone spending £10 can get a free bakery item.
In a separate change to its self-service checkouts, the retailer is also trialling cameras that can spot when a shopper fails to scan an item, as it tries to crack down on shoplifting.
The VAR-style "non-scan detection" technology is currently being trialled in two London stores, according to the Grocer, and plays back footage to shoppers if they fail to scan an item.
Tesco recently brought in the technology to its scan-and-go tills, following several rival supermarkets who have also introduced it.
It comes as companies look for efficiency savings to offset the upcoming hike in employer National Insurance contributions (NICs) and minimum wage.
Marks and Spencer earlier this year began trialling new "smart checkouts" that will tot up shoppers' baskets without the need for scanning.
Morrisons has also rolled out a new AI tool to help customers find items quicker in stores through its app.
Shoppers can type in a vague description of what they're looking for and the More app will then tell them which aisle it's in and its precise location.
Futuristic pricing systems are also being trialled by some supermarkets, including Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Sainsbury's.
The technology allows prices to be displayed electronically on shelves and is automatically updated throughout the day.

Over half of Germans would not fight for their country
Nearly two-thirds of Germans would 'probably not' defend their homeland from invaders, a survey has found, in a blow to the government's rearmament plans. In a survey carried out for RND, a German broadcaster, 59 per cent of respondents said they were 'probably' or 'definitely' unwilling to defend the country from an attack. Only 16 per cent of Germans were 'definitely' willing to take up arms to defend Germany, while 22 per cent said they would 'probably' do it. The new figures are a headache for Boris Pistorius, the German defence minister, as he leads efforts to rearm Germany and turn it into a serious European security power, following decades of under-investment in the army. In July, Mr Pistorius unveiled plans to recruit 40,000 young adults per year into the Bundeswehr, the German armed forces, by 2031 as part of a new military service scheme. The same scheme plans to send out compulsory questionnaires to young male Germans to fill in once they turn 18, and could be followed by compulsory health screenings of young men to check their suitability for the army. Bundeswehr officials say that the overall size of the army needs to grow from 182,000 soldiers to at least 260,000 by 2035. The Bundeswehr reserve forces also need to be increased from 60,000 to 200,000 people. The German military has struggled for decades with recruitment, partly due to Germans' wartime guilt and a widely held view that their country no longer needed an army. Conscription in Germany, which was deeply unpopular, ended in 2011. But the Russian invasion of Ukraine has prompted a major rethink on security in Berlin, known as the 'Zeitenwende', or turning of the times. Friedrich Merz, the German chancellor, declared that 'Germany is back' after his election victory in February, as he vowed to stand up to Russian president Vladimir Putin. The centre-Right Christian Democrats [CDU] party leader has introduced historic debt reforms, which allow potentially unlimited government defence spending on projects costing more than 1 per cent of GDP. The Merz government has also created a 500bn euro (£435bn) special infrastructure fund, which will rebuild the country's crumbling road and rail networks. The fund is a crucial part of Nato's wider security planning for a potential war with Russia, as Germany would serve as a transit zone for troops and tanks en route to the eastern front. Germany is not the only country having difficulties drumming up recruits: in Italy, a similar survey also found that only 16 per cent of citizens were willing to defend their nation - despite defence spending increasing by 46 per cent over the past decade. In Britain, the army and navy have missed nearly every annual recruitment target since 2010, according to government statistics. The shortfall has been blamed on stagnant pay, poor military housing, a wider downward trend in young people being interested in fighting for their country.

BioNTech's Q2 revenues double on higher COVID vaccine sales

The company's quarterly net loss came in at 387 million euros, an improvement over a net loss of 808 million in the year-earlier period, which at the time was burdened by provisions for a settlement with the U.S. National Institutes of Health over vaccine royalty payments. BioNTech reiterated its guidance for 2025 revenues of 1.7 billion to 2.2 billion euros, down from 2.75 billion last year. Nothing shouts ‘get out my way' like Mercedes' new grille
Mercedes has revealed the first glimpse of its next-generation design language, including a feature that will ensure you always know when one of its models is bearing down on you in your rear-view mirror – presumably in the fast lane of the motorway. Centred around a three-panel light-up grille and an illuminated badge, the new look will appear on the electric-only Mercedes GLC with EQ Technology, which is set to make its public debut at next month's Munich Motor Show. Advertisement - Article continues below The maker is calling it a reinterpretation of 'one of the most iconic design elements in automotive history' – referring to its recognisable chrome grille design that dates back to the early 20th century. The dramatic reinvention features 140 LEDs hidden behind a 'smoked-glass-effect lattice structure', powering 942 backlit squares across three separate panels. In the centre sits the familiar three-pointed star, which will be illuminated to a lesser or greater extent depending on market legislation. According to Mercedes CEO, Ola Källenius, the front end of the firm's cars is its 'calling card', despite originally being designed with a 'form follows function' philosophy; its honeycomb structure's primary purpose was to cool the big-capacity engines fitted during the inter-war period. But what started as an operational necessity, quickly manifested into a core styling feature. Speaking to Auto Express, Källenius referenced his childhood, claiming that 'if there was a Mercedes in the neighbourhood, every single kid knew which one it was'. While Mercedes is keeping the rest of the GLC's design under wraps for now, spy shots give us a good idea of the car's overall proportions. Rumoured to be based on the bespoke new platform – also set to underpin the future electric C-Class – it looks to get headlights that are smaller and lower-set than before, plus a dramatically extended wheelbase and slightly sloping roofline. We can also pick out the flush door handles, plus rear lights featuring the star design found on the latest E-Class saloon. Inside, Mercedes has confirmed the SUV will get an 'all-new, seamless MBUX Hyperscreen'. The maker says it 'elevates the inside of the new GLC in a way never seen before,' though exactly what form this will take remains to be seen. The car it does replace is Merc's first mass-produced EV, the EQC, which was launched in 2019. The platform would give the new GLC a more efficient base than that used by the first-generation model, and allow it to use more advanced battery packs and electric motors. It's also expected to feature an 800V electrical architecture, like the Porsche Macan Electric, which would help with both charging and performance. That old model was only available in one specification, with dual motors and all-wheel drive as standard. However, single-motor variants may serve as the entry point to the new electric GLC range, as is the case with the Mercedes EQE SUV, and the recently facelifted EQA and EQB. Much of the line-up will still feature dual motors, especially the hot AMG version we've previously spied. The Mercedes-AMG GLCs also featured a bulging bonnet, an aggressive front bumper and large ventilated brake discs that sit behind bigger wheels. AMG is sure to have made some tweaks to the chassis and lowered the ride height as well. The new GLC will also introduce a new generation of Mercedes digital interfaces and interior design, and will be optimised to seat five passengers. But it'll have a tough job stealing the limelight when the covers come off in September, because its arch-rival, the BMW iX3, will also be revealed in Munich. We expect it to be a little while before the new Mercedes goes on sale in the UK, arriving in mid-2026.
