Hezbollah chief meets Iran's top diplomat amid Israeli drone activity

dpa Beirut Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem met on Wednesday with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, amid heavy Israeli drone activity over Beirut. The meeting, also attended by Iran's ambassador to Lebanon, Mojtaba Amani, focused on regional developments and bilateral ties, according to a statement from Hezbollah's media relations office. The announcement, which did not disclose the location of the meeting, coincided with sightings of Israeli drone over the Lebanese capital across areas considered strongholds of Hezbollah. The drone activity underscored the ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, which have sharply escalated since the outbreak of the Gaza war. Qassem has largely limited his appearances to video messages since the assassination of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last year. He is believed to have avoided public events in Beirut due to the threat of Israeli strikes. During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed the strategic alliance between Hezbollah and Iran, the Hezbollah statement said. Araghchi emphasized Tehran's commitment to supporting Lebanon in 'economic, political, and social matters,' while stressing 'mutual respect and strengthened cooperation' between the two countries. The Hezbollah leader, on his part, thanked Iran for its continued support, praising what he called Tehran's 'positive role in the region,' particularly in backing the Palestinian resistance during the ongoing Gaza conflict.
