India's Asia Cup 2025 squad announcement: What would the Suryakumar Yadav-led side look like? Who's IN & who's OUT?
India have been clubbed alongside Pakistan, Oman and UAE in Group A. The Suryakumar Yadav-led side will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign against UAE on September 9, followed by the high-octane clash against Pakistan four days later. India will finish their group assignments against Oman on September 19. If all goes well, India could face Pakistan two more times in the Super Four stage and in the final.
If multiple reports are to be believed, India's Test captain Shubman Gill is making a comeback to the T20I side after more than a year following his 650 runs for Gujarat Titans in IPL 2025. There is a possibility Gill might open the innings with Abhishek Sharma with Sanju Samson coming at no.3. Captain Suryakumar will bat at no.4. Although Yashasvi Jaiswal doesn't feature in T20Is much, the southpaw might go as a backup opener.
Shreyas Iyer, who had an impressive IPL 2025 for Punjab Kings as captain with 604 runs at a strike rate of 175.07, is expected to make a comeback too, but will receive stiff competition by Tilak Varma for the no.5 spot. Varma has been in tremendous form for India recently, scoring 749 runs in 24 T20Is at a strike rate of 155.07. India could also pick one among Rinku Singh or Shivam Dube as a back-up in the middle order.
Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel will be the two main all-rounders in the squad at no.6 and 7 with both India depth with their batting prowess. If India want more depth in batting, the Men in Blue could include Washington Sundar, who has been in phenomenal form in recent times. Samson will be keeping wickets while one among Ishan Kishan and Dhruv Jurel being picked as a back-up option.
Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are likely to be the the frontline pacers in the squad with Pandya adding up to the fourth seamer's option. Varun Chakaravarthy will be the sole specialist spinner in the squad. However, it remains to be seen who among Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi make the squad as the second speciallist spinner. The Asia Cup 2025 will be played as T20Is, as a preparation for T20 World Cup 2026.
Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (WK), Tilak Varma, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakaravarthy, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh/Shivam Dube, Ishan Kishan/Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav/Ravi Bishnoi, Yashasvi Jaiswal

"Great Lesson To...": Sanjay Manjrekar On India Winning 2 England Tests Without Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah's workload management has been a massive talking point. After an injury during the India vs Australia 2024/25 Test series ruled him out of action for more than three months, the team management has become more careful than ever before regarding the player's fitness. As a result, Bumrah played just three of the five Test matches in the recently-concluded series in England, putting himself under severe criticism. Bumrah played the first, third and fourth match of the series, while missing out the second and fifth game. Several questions were raised over Bumrah's decision of skipping matches to maintain his fitness. Some even went on to say that the player could not "pick and choose" matches. Recently, former India batter Sanjay Manjrekar also threw light on the topic and said that Bumrah should not be the frontline pick for India if he could not play more than two consecutive matches. The India vs England Test series ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, and interestingly both of India's victories came in the matches that Bumrah didn't play. In the three games that the right-arm pacer played, India lost two and drew one. "...the game will always show us the mirror however much we try and gloss over things. It was poetic justice that the two Tests India won were two matches Bumrah did not play," wrote Sanjay Manjrekar in his column for Hindustan Times. "This should embolden the Indian selectors to make some hard choices when it comes to big-name players. This series has been a great lesson to them and to us too, the two Tests victories India achieved did not feature Virat (Kohli), (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Rohit (Sharma), (Mohammed) Shami and Bumrah too! It reminded us of the eternal truth of sport and life, no one, however great, is indispensable.
