Nebraska softball season ends in 1-0 loss to Tennessee at the Super Regional
On Sunday afternoon, the Nebraska softball team (43-15) entered a winner-take-all game three with No. 7 Tennessee (45-15) in the Super Regional. Nebraska's season ended on the day, as it fell to the Volunteers, suffering a shutout loss for the first time since the end of February.
Ella Dodge scored the lone run of the game in the first inning, a solo shot over the center field wall to give Tennessee the only run needed.
The Volunteers, meanwhile, shut down Nebraska's offense, holding the team to just two hits. Tennessee's Karlyn Pickens delivered a masterclass performance in the pitching circle, tossing a complete game and firing 10 strikeouts.
The Huskers' biggest scoring opportunity arrived in the fifth after getting a runner in scoring position with no outs. Nebraska got the bases loaded with two outs but left all three runners stranded in the end.
Ava Kuszak and Hannah Camenzind delivered the lone hits for the Huskers. Kuszak struck a single in the first inning but got caught at second base attempting to make the hit a double. Camenzind hit a single to start the fifth.
Jordyn Bahl (26-8) suffered the loss in the circle for the Huskers after pitching a complete game. She threw four strikeouts and allowed four hits and one run.
Nebraska ends the season with a final record of 43-15, marking its best season in over a decade.

UNC football coach Bill Belichick gives early thoughts on the transfer quarterback
During the time period this offseason when many fans were evaluating the idea that the UNC football team could sign ex-Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava, South Alabama transfer QB made himself available and became the Tar Heels' target. Lopez committed to North Carolina and immediately entered a quarterback battle with Max Johnson and freshman Bryce Baker. The 6-foot-0 QB from James Clemens HS in Madison, Alabama, was a three-star prospect out of high school and a three-star prospect, just a two-point differential in rating, according to 247Sports. Advertisement However, Belichick loves the underrated player that he believes can evolve to something better than anyone else believes he is. Now, coach has had time to evaluate that decision and spoke on on what he thought of Lopez. Quoted via Inside Carolina, this is what Belichick had to say when asked about what he thought about Gio Lopez: "Gio was really productive at South Alabama. He's a dual-threat quarterback. He's had plenty of production, yardage, and both running game and passing game experience. Tough kid, played well against some good competition, teams like LSU. So looks like he's definitely ready for this level. And we're excited to work with him, as we are with everybody else." Last season, in Lopez's freshman year at South Alabama, he threw for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns with five interceptions. He finished the season with a 150.8 QB rating and a 66% completion percentage. He averaged 8.2 yards per throw on the mid-major squad. Advertisement Lopez will now enter Power 4 territory and could have the opportunity to be the first starting quarterback under the Bill Belichick era. There is still plenty of practice to go between now and the opening kickoff against TCU in September. Projections for five Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round
Projections for five Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round The 2025 MLB draft will take place July 13-14 at Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, Georgia. Liam Doyle, Gavin Kilen, Andrew Fischer, Dean Curley, Marcus Phillips, AJ Russell, Tanner Franklin and Nate Snead are former Vols expected to be drafted in 2025. Eight former Vols were selected in the 2024 MLB draft: Christian Moore (Angels), Blake Burke (Milwaukee), Billy Amick (Minnesota), Dylan Dreiling (Texas), Drew Beam (Kansas City), Kavares Tears (San Diego), A.J. Causey (Kansas City) and Aaron Combs (White Sox). Joe Doyle of Future Stars Series released a mock draft for the first round. Below are 2025 MLB draft projections and excerpts for Tennessee players from Doyle. Liam Doyle Team: Cincinnati Pick: No. 9 '(Jamie) Arnold or Doyle here? Coin toss. Could it be (Ike) Irish instead? What about (Billy) Carlson? The Reds are a tough code to crack. In years past, they've gone for more physical starting pitchers with bigger stuff and better fastballs. For that reason, we'll stick Doyle in the 9-hole.' Gavin Kilen Team: Tampa Bay Pick: No. 14 'Word on the street is Kilen is unlikely to get out of the top 15 picks in the Draft. Teams above this, like the Athletics and White Sox, shouldn't be discounted. The Rays have always seemed to prefer position players, and specifically position players with versatility and well-balanced tools. Kilen could move quickly and has the chops to play a number of positions.' Andrew Fischer Team: Milwaukee Pick: No. 32 More: USA TODAY projects four Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round AJ Russell Team: Boston Pick: No. 33 More: Former Vols by the numbers in 2025 MLB Week 11 Dean Curley Team: Tampa Bay Pick: No. 42 More: Tennessee baseball year-by-year home run totals under Tony Vitello Follow Vols Wire on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
