Crow urges motorists to check engines before starting during winter
AS the temperature steadily drops, the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (Crow) urges motorists to be aware that wildlife may seek warmth under or even inside vehicles.

The non-profit organisation recently admitted two dassies, also known as rock hyraxes, one of which sustained injuries after seeking respite in a car engine bay.
Crow operations director, Clint Halkett-Siddall, said, 'Cold weather snaps like we have experienced recently often drive small mammals like dassies, mongooses, and even domestic cats and cold-blooded reptiles to seek out warm, enclosed spaces such as engine compartments and wheel arches, where they are at serious risk of injury or death once the vehicle has started.'
He emphasised that it is especially important to be extra vigilant of such unaware hitchhikers in areas where humans and wildlife co-exist, including residential areas, nature-adjacent suburbs and holiday destinations situated in more rural environments.
'We are especially concerned during school holidays and long weekends, when families travel to rural or bushy areas. It is vital to check your car before you start it the next morning, particularly if you have parked overnight in or near a natural environment,' said Halkett-Siddall.

What can you do?
Tap the bonnet before getting into the vehicle.
Check under the vehicle and around the wheels.
Be extra cautious when parked near bushy or rocky areas.
If you hear unusual sounds or spot movement, do not start the engine.

The road's deterioration highlights a broader, ongoing problem in Johannesburg – the steady decline of the city's aging and poorly-maintained infrastructure. Though CR Swart Drive has now been reopened, residents say little has improved. 'JRA needs to find a permanent solution when it comes to fixing the potholes on CR Swart Drive,' said Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau. '[The holes] keep on resurfacing and that takes them back to square one.' The JRA meanwhile has pointed out that pothole repair is prioritised according to the degree and extent of the damage to the street surface. They attributed CR Swart Drive's deterioration to ongoing heavy rains. This has been compounded by a leaking water main that continues to weaken the road. 'We also give priority to major roads and those near public spaces like schools,' added JRA's Head of Department for Regional Operations, Khaya Gqibitole. 'Our team has completed the repairs on CR Swart Drive, and our goal is to continually improve turnaround times and the durability of repairs.' Mkhwanazi slams doorless car cop [video]
KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has ordered that disciplinary steps be taken against a police officer who was captured on a viral video driving a doorless marked police car. The video was taken on Sunday, 1 June, as the police vehicle was involved in an accident in the Durban North policing precincts where it collided with a minibus taxi. According to the police, the driver at the time of the accident was a female Warrant Officer who was trapped inside the vehicle, and the door had to be removed to rescue her. KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said without the door, although in a drivable condition, the vehicle should have been towed back to the police station. 'Instead of following prescribed procedures, another driver, also a Warrant Officer, drove the vehicle to the station, endangering his life and putting the name and the image of the SAPS into disrepute,' he said.
