These are the factors that fuelled SA auto industry's strong Q1 rebound

TimesLIVE3 days ago

The recovery of the SA automotive sector is driven by improved consumer sentiment, lower interest rates and access to retirement savings through two-pot withdrawals, according to the latest TransUnion SA Mobility Insights Report for Q1 2025.
Rising real wages have also contributed to an upward trajectory averaging about 34,000 monthly passenger vehicle sales in the first quarter of the year, and representing the highest levels seen since Q3 2015.
Affordability, longer ownership cycles and the growing availability of low-cost models remains the driver of purchase decisions, particularly younger and first-time buyers.
'SA consumers are returning to the vehicle market with a clear focus on value and flexibility,' said Lee Naik, CEO of TransUnion Africa.
'We're seeing a continued shift away from traditional premium segments in favour of more accessible alternatives that meet evolving needs and budgets.'
Social media
Gen Z's rising influence, responsible for a 27.9% year-on-year increase in vehicle finance volumes, highlights social media's importance to automotive brands aiming to attract younger buyers, who are said to spend more than three-and-a-half hours daily on platforms including TikTok, Instagram and YouTube.

Sassa grant payments delayed due to undisclosed income

THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), in collaboration with registered Credit Bureaus, has identified 210 000 social grant beneficiaries who appear to be receiving income that was not disclosed to the agency. As a result, this month's grant payments will be delayed for some of the affected beneficiaries. Sassa said according to the Social Assistance Act and its regulations, beneficiaries are legally required to fully disclose all sources of income during their initial application. Also read: Metro police enforce zero-tolerance policy on illegal truck parking Beneficiaries are also obligated to inform Sassa of any changes to their financial circumstances after their application has been approved. Spokesperson for Sassa Paseka Letsatsi said failure to comply with these requirements constitutes a violation of the Act and may result in corrective action. 'As part of this initiative, social grant payments for the affected beneficiaries will be delayed in the June 2025 payment cycle. These individuals are required to present themselves at their nearest Sassa local offices for a grant review within 30 days from this notice date, in line with Regulation 30 of the Social Assistance Act. Beneficiaries who fail to comply with this process risk having their grants suspended. Continued non-compliance may lead to the permanent lapsing of their grants,' said Letsatsi. Letsatsi said the initiative is aimed at ensuring that beneficiaries confirm any changes in their financial circumstances and update their personal details. 'It also seeks to address potential inclusion errors in the current social security system. A beneficiary may have qualified for a grant at the time of application, but improved material conditions over time may render them ineligible,' said Letsatsi. Also read: How to apply for an ID For further details on the Sassa social grant fraud cases, click here. Sassa has encouraged all beneficiaries to disclose any alternative sources of income and to report any additional bank accounts not previously declared. Those beneficiaries still using the green bar-coded ID book are urged to replace it with the smart ID card, due to the increased risk of fraud associated with the older ID format. 'Sassa reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on fraud, and should there be evidence of any officials colluding with beneficiaries to defraud the system, immediate disciplinary and legal action will be taken to safeguard the integrity of the Agency and prevent financial losses,' Letsatsi added. When bromance turns sour: the hilarious digital feud between Elon Musk and Donald Trump

The budding bromance between US President Donald Trump and SA-born billionaire Elon Musk is over Image: Graphic/Se-Anne Rall Breakups can be catastrophic, and when they happen on a global stage, they morph from private heartbreaks into public spectacles. Add social media into the mix, and it's a full-blown circus. Such is the case with Elon Musk and Donald Trump, whose relationship has unravelled in a way that's equal parts cringeworthy, comedic, and political chaos. The Trump Elon break up is totally expected news. — Khaya Dlanga (@khayadlanga) June 6, 2025 Video Player is loading. And while most breakups involve a few sharp words, maybe an awkward run-in at the grocery store, this one comes with viral tweets, passive-aggressive barbs, and a nation's economic future hanging in the balance. In true breakup fashion, even the ex got involved. Ashley St. Clair, Musk's former partner and mom to their 9-month-old son Romulus, couldn't resist throwing shade. On June 5, she tweeted, 'Hey @realDonaldTrump, lmk if u need any breakup advice.' Brutal. The feud has turned into a digital slugfest, with both men dredging up old posts to prove their points. Image: screenshot/X Cue the internet to lose its collective mind. One TikTok user dubbed it the "first messy breakup of Pride Month," and another quipped, 'So bad things are happening in America?' Even St. Clair's subtle shade couldn't overshadow the drama unfolding between Musk and Trump, two men who seem hell-bent on proving that the real fireworks of 2025 will be on Twitter or 'X,' as Musk prefers to call it now. The gloves are off. Musk, who was once one of Trump's biggest allies and financial backers, didn't hold back. He blasted Trump's new spending bill, calling it a 'deficit-fueling behemoth' and accusing the president of betraying conservative principles. "Without me, Trump would have lost the election," Musk declared on X, adding, 'Such ingratitude.' Trump, never one to let a perceived slight slide, fired back on his own platform, Truth Social. He claimed Musk's departure wasn't as amicable as it seemed. 'Elon was wearing thin,' Trump wrote, accusing Musk of 'going crazy' after learning the electric vehicle mandate was being cut. Elon: I got Trump elected Trump: I asked Elon to leave and maybe I'll take away his government contracts Elon: Trump is in the Epstein files — Stephen Sanchez (@SSanchezTV) June 5, 2025 The president of the United States of America even brought Musk's beloved EVs into the mix. "I took away his EV mandate that forced everyone to buy Electric Cars that nobody else wanted," Trump said, painting Musk as a scorned ex who just couldn't let go. Social media is the new battlefield. The feud has turned into a digital slugfest, with both men dredging up old posts to prove their points. Image: screenshot/tiktok Musk reposted Trump's 2013 tweet criticising Republicans for raising the debt ceiling, sarcastically commenting, 'Wise words.' He even questioned whether the current Trump is a 'body double,' wondering what happened to the man who once championed balanced budgets. Trump, on the other hand, accused Musk of changing his position only after his EV interests were threatened, claiming, "Elon knew this bill inside out and had no problem with it until it hit his bottom line." hey @realDonaldTrump lmk if u need any breakup advice — Ashley St. Clair (@stclairashley) June 5, 2025 If their exchanges seem petty, that's because they are. But the stakes are anything but small. Behind the snarky tweets and veiled insults lies a growing divide over America's economic strategy, with Musk railing against what he sees as reckless spending and Trump doubling down on his legislative agenda. Dirty laundry and public spectacles; the public has been eating it up. From TikTok to Twitter, the internet is awash with commentary on the feud. Image: Screenshot/TikTok 'They're airing out their dirty laundry like it's a reality show,' one user joked. But in reality, this isn't just tabloid fodder, it's a messy clash of egos with real political consequences. For now, the fallout continues to unfold in real-time. Musk has made it clear he's not backing down, calling Trump's policies 'a disgusting abomination.' Meanwhile, Trump has hinted that Musk's attacks are only going to escalate, saying, 'I don't know if we will [have a great relationship] anymore.' Metro reacts to criticism over Housing Company's poor performance

The metro said it is addressing concerns over poor rental collection rates in its public housing, especially in areas like Clarina. Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo emphasised that the tenants at Clarina, who are part of the ex-Schubart Park group, were served with eviction notices following a court order. As a result, the metro has no obligation to provide temporary emergency accommodation for these residents. This comes after Freedom Front Plus councillor Lenor Janse van Rensburg levelled heavy criticism against the instability of the House Company Tshwane (HCT). Mashigo said the metro's broader rental collection efforts are focused on strategies such as encouraging tenants to make payment arrangements, implementing deductions for city employees, and addressing illegal tenants through eviction notices. These actions aim to improve the overall rental collection, which stands at 85%, excluding Clarina and Rooiwaal. Long-term, the metro aims to reduce taxpayer reliance by diversifying the HCT's operations. Mashigo revealed that HCT's mandate has been extended to include affordable student housing, rental units, and first-home finance options, allowing the entity to cross-subsidise lower-income residents and work towards self-sustainability. 'This will enable the entity to cross-subsidise the lower-income earners and enable the entity to become self-sustainable.' Regarding HCT's R50-million salary bill, Mashigo defended the expenditure, pointing out the entity had made significant progress in improving rental collections since taking over the management of these properties. He also confirmed that HCT undergoes annual audits by the Auditor-General of South Africa (AGSA), with no findings of financial mismanagement. The metro is also exploring private sector partnerships and strategies to enhance social housing service delivery and financial viability, as part of its broader affordable housing plan. Housing projects managed by HCT, include: – Eloff Gebou, Pretoria CBD; – Townlands Social Housing, Pretoria CBD; – Sunnyside Social Housing, Sunnyside; – Chantelle Village, Akasia – Clarina Estate, Pretoria North; – Little Manhattan, Pretoria West. – Marabastad: Western Pretoria Inner City and home to the large Townlands Social Housing project.
