Brenda Blethyn bags first new TV role since emotional Vera exit - and it's worlds away from the ITV detective hit

Daily Mail28-04-2025
Vera star Brenda Blethyn has been announced as the leading actress in Channel 4 's new adaptation of A Woman Of Substance.
The 1979 novel, written by Barbara Taylor Bradford, follows the iconic Emma Harte, an impoverished yet ambitious housemaid living in 1911 Yorkshire.
Harte embarks on a dizzying journey from survival to success as she shatters the glass ceilings of 20th-century society, becoming a formidable business mogul and later, the world's richest woman.
The protagonist's story continues through to her modern life, as she navigates the trials and tribulations of her business empire, facing threats from the most unexpected of places along the way.
A Woman Of Substance marked the outset of the Emma Harte saga for its author, Bradford, and went on to become sensational, selling more than 30 million copies worldwide.
In 1984, the original TV adaptation of the book, starring Deborah Kerr and Jenny Seagrove gained a huge amount of traction for Channel 4.

Its finale on January 4th, 1985, boasted 13.8 million viewers, which remains the channel's highest ever audience to this day.
'I'm overjoyed to be taking on this iconic role, in the footsteps of the great Deborah Kerr.' Says Blethyn, 'As a fan of Barbara Taylor-Bradford, it is an unmissable opportunity to play the fierce Emma Harte.'
Blethyn will take on the role of Harte alongside her co-star Jessica Reynolds, who will play the younger version of the tenacious protagonist.
'The team and cast we have behind this are truly inspiring,' says Reynolds. 'I'm so excited to bring the stunning scripts and this great piece of literature to the screen.'
Channel 4 commissioning editor, Rebecca Holdsworth, highlights that the new adaptation will be a 'fresh, sexy and bold' take on the source material.
The rags-to-riches period drama will prove a stark contrast to Brenda Blethyn's 14-year portrayal of the titular role in Vera- a gritty, enthralling crime drama with a Newcastle backdrop.
The four-time National Television Award-nominated series came to a close earlier this year, after the Oscar-nominated actress hung up her infamous trench coat and hat to bid farewell to Northumberland with one last season.
The last time we saw Blethyn on our screens, Vera was walking away on a beach, assured and ready for retirement in an emotive and well-rounded finale.
Earlier this year, Brenda Blethyn was presented with an Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2025 TV Choice Awards
The woman behind the character, however, is eager for a new challenge.
Earlier this year, Brenda Blethyn was presented with an Outstanding Contribution Award at the 2025 TV Choice Awards.
It was in recognition of ITV detective series Vera, in which she played DCI Vera Stanhope before quitting last year after 14 series.
Chosen to present the gong was Brenda's Secrets and Lies co-star and fellow BAFTA winner Timothy Spall, 67.

Katie Price fires back after Peter Andre hits out in shock rant

Katie Price has hit back after Peter Andre shared a blistering new Instagram post, in which he strongly criticises his ex-wife Former glamour model Katie Price and Peter Andre met on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here in 2004 and went on to have two children together – Princess, 18, and Junior, 20 – before separating in 2009. In a new Instagram post, Peter wrote: 'For sixteen years, I have stayed silent in the face of repeated lies from my ex-wife and her family, out of respect for my children and loved ones, but staying silent has been incredibly frustrating. 'That ends today.' Peter's statement, posted against a black background to his Instagram feed, continued: 'The latest comments about my children's welfare and living arrangements compel me to set the record straight. 'For well-documented reasons, and for their safety, Junior and Princess came into my care in 2018 and remained with me until they reached adulthood. In 2019, the family courts issued a legally binding order to enforce this arrangement. I have never made this public before, out of respect for my children. 'In 2011 and 2015, publicly documented court cases, found my ex-wife had made false claims. She was ordered to pay substantial damages and legal costs, and to apologise, to me and my management. The same falsehoods are being repeated today. 'Unfortunately, there are many more lies and baseless accusations I have yet to address. Those will now be dealt with in the coming months.' In a statement to Metro, Katie's representative said: 'Kate is in a much better and clear headspace and is at peace with the situation, this was in the past and she doesn't feel the need to bring up tit for tat comments, but more importantly she's dealing with this the right way and it's now in her lawyers hands. 'Kate will no longer be gaslight and bullied as she once was…' Since Peter posted the statement, Katie took to her Instagram Stories to share details for a pair of tummy tuck leggings she's promoting. It comes after Katie slammed those producing their daughter Princess Andre's debut reality ITV series, The Princess Diaries. More Trending Chatting to her sister Sophie Price on her podcast, The Katie Price Show, on an episode titled The Truth Behind The Princess Diaries, the duo chatted openly about Katie's daughter's new ITV2 show. The reality TV star revealed on her podcast that she has been deliberately cut out of the new TV series because it wasn't good for Princess' brand. Emmerdale's Charity in baby DNA scandal as Ross Barton twist changes everything

Emmerdale's latest episode saw Charity Dingle's betrayal exposed moments after announcing she was pregnant as surrogate for Sarah Sugden and Jacob Gallagher on the ITV soap There was a big twist on Emmerdale on Thursday that saw the surrogacy storyline take an awkward turn. Just as Charity Dingle learned she was pregnant at the fertility clinic, a later scene revealed all may not be as it seemed. ‌ Charity had agreed to be a surrogate for her granddaughter Sarah Sugden and her partner Jacob Gallagher. After an embryo transfer Charity feared it was unsuccessful as she began to bleed. ‌ So imagine her shock when at the clinic ahead of a second procedure, Charity was told she was in fact pregnant sparking celebrations with the family. It comes after a scene recently teased a reunion for Charity and her ex Vanessa Woodfield, amid her marriage to Mackenzie Boyd hitting the rocks. ‌ But the truth about what really happened to them and another character was revealed on Thursday night, and it revealed a potential DNA scandal. Charity seemed a little concerned about the pregnancy and the celebrations by Sarah. It was clear she was hiding something and she wasn't alone, as her ex Ross Barton was seen watching her like there was something he needed to say. We then finally saw flashbacks to the night Charity got drunk and headed over to Vanessa's house, with the pair sharing a kiss. It wasn't Vanessa who Charity spent the night with though, as a flashback confirmed this kiss led nowhere and Charity ended up in the arms of Ross. Vanessa had actually rejected Charity's advances, before sending her out of the house. A rejected Charity staggered around before coming across Ross who had also hit the bottle over his split with Steph Miligan. Soon the pair were kissing before they head off together, and as it panned back to present day the truth came out. ‌ Ross asked Charity: "Is it mine?" confirming they had slept together and that there was a chance Charity was pregnant with his child and not with the embryo she is carrying for Sarah. Having heard the baby news and sensing Charity's panic, Ross was quick to figure things out. With that the pair went off for a private chat with Ross demanding to know the paternity of the baby. But will Ross expose her to Mack and Sarah after her betrayal, and could it lead to a split amid reports Mack will be killed by John Sugden? Then there's the fact that if Charity is pregnant with Ross' baby, she's about to break Sarah's heart after offering to be her surrogate. So will she find out the truth or cover it all up just to keep everyone happy? Former TOWIE favourite to star in popular Channel 4 dating show following 'abusive' relationship history

The cousin of a popular former The Only Way Is Essex star has been announced as appearing on a popular Channel 4 dating show A star from The Only Way Is Essex (TOWIE) is set to grace our screens on a popular Channel 4 dating show this month as a fresh season kicks off. ‌ First Dates, which returned for its 24th series in July, sets up singletons on blind dates at a restaurant. Since its debut in 2013, the programme has been a hit with viewers who enjoy watching contestants being paired based on their personalities and preferences, all in the hope of igniting a romantic spark. ‌ This month, former TOWIE star Leah Wright will be making an appearance. Leah first graced our screens in TOWIE back in 2011 and is related to Mark Wright and Elliott Wright. ‌ Leah will feature in episode nine of First Dates, which airs on August 28 at 10pm on Channel 4. A teaser reveals: "This time, a reality TV star seeks some old-school romance. Sparks fly as TOWIE's Leah Wright meets ex-bouncer Steve from Runcorn, but is distance a dealbreaker?", reports Essex Live. "While one dater hopes for luxury gifts, a free spirit wrestles with commitment. And a nervous first-timer meets a confident dater and the two of them get caught up in silence." However, aside from her reality TV appearances, Leah has been candid about her past "abusive" relationship. Having previously partnered with charity Refuge, she opened up about her journey, admitting she felt "so lonely." Posting footage from her interview on Instagram, the celebrity discussed her personal journey through domestic abuse openly. ‌ She revealed: "For many years I went through life not thinking about evidence, you know, not thinking about anything, not knowing laws, not knowing if I can get help from the government, not knowing that I would be okay. "And I think that is a message that I just want to give, that you are going to be okay. I've gone through court, and I was believed in the end. It was big fight, it was a long fight, an emotional fight, and it took a lot of strength." ‌ She continued: "'When you're manipulated that much that you are scared to leave, the first thing is you don't know where to go. Do I call a number? Am I going to get caught calling that number? "There is help out there. Please don't feel alone, we always have so many resources. Refuge are a brilliant place to start if you need to call, and talking to that person who's so understanding, really helped me." The TOWIE personality became part of the ITV reality programme in 2011 and capitalised on the Wright family's achievements. However, she departed after four years to explore different career paths.
