2025 The Everest: Private Harry, Briasa shine in latest trials

The Australian20 hours ago
Private Harry and Briasa began their trek to the $20 million The Everest with equally impressive barrier trial efforts on Monday.
The Nathan Doyle-trained Private Harry monstered his rivals in a 1000m heat at Gosford, racing clear from the turn to win by more than four lengths under a 'stranglehold'' by jockey Ashley Morgan.
Then a few minutes later at Canterbury, Team Hawkes' stable star Briasa contested a Group trial over 900m and led throughout under Zac Lloyd to win with his ears pricked by one-and-a-half lengths.

Both outstanding sprinters were having their first barrier trial hit-outs of the new season and demonstrated why they are so high in betting for The Everest at Royal Randwick on October 18 – Private Harry is second favourite at $6 and Briasa next at $8 behind Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising ($1.80 favourite).
Although unbeaten Private Harry's Gosford trials rivals were only moderate, the four-year-old's speed, acceleration and sheer class were obvious.
'Ash (Morgan, jockey) was speechless, he couldn't believe how good Private Harry horse felt,'' Sean Driver, of part-owner Kurrinda Bloodstock, said.
'The horse was in second gear through the trial, he has come back better.''
• Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from Rosebud day at Rosehill Gardens
Private Harry, winner of his five starts including the Group 1 The Galaxy last autumn, is due to have another barrier trial before his likely return to racing in the Group 2 $1 million The Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick on September 20.
'Nathan plans to give Private Harry another trial in two weeks in Sydney and then the horse will have an exhibition gallop before going first-up in The Shorts,'' Driver added.
Global racing and breeding giant Yulong purchased a half-share in Private Harry earlier this year and has selected the sprinter to run in its Everest slot.
The 'Grey Flash' Briasa is at the same stage of his preparation as Private Harry and also looked in great order as he dominated his Canterbury trial, easily defeating a classy line-up with stablemate Airman working home nicely for second ahead of promising three-year-olds Rivellino and North England.
• The Everest possibility for Waller's new leading Lady
Briasa has won seven of his 10 starts including the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes last autumn and has been picked up for The Everest by slot-holders Max Whitby, Neil Werrett, Col Madden and Steve McCann.
Ka Ying Rising (Hong Kong Jockey Club) and Jimmysstar (TAB) are the only other sprinters with confirmed slots for the 12-horse Everest field.

South Africa ODI bowler reported over suspect action

South Africa's spinning allrounder Prenelan Subrayen has been reported over a suspect bowling action after the Proteas' victory in the first one-day international against Australia. The 31-year-old offspinner, who took the key wicket of Travis Head early on before taking 1-46 in his 10 overs, had been making his ODI debut in the 98-run win in Cairns on Tuesday. But in the match officials' report, concerns were cited about the legality of his bowling action. With Subrayen now having to face an independent assessment of his action at an ICC-accredited testing facility within 14 days, the news is a blow to the Proteas who are already having to cope without injured star paceman Kagiso Rabada. After losing the T20I series 2-1, the Proteas are eyeing revenge in the ODI series with two matches still to be played in Mackay on Friday and Sunday. It was only two months ago that Subrayen also earned his first Test appearance against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, and he was immensely proud and emotional after the honour of receiving his first ODI cap in Cairns. Subrayen has previously had plenty of scrutiny over his action, starting well over a decade ago. In December 2012, Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation after two separate independent tests showed his action to be illegal, but he was cleared to bowl again in January 2013 after re-testing. Subrayen was subsequently reported twice the following two years during matches, before he was eventually cleared to resume bowling after having his action examined at South Africa's national performance centre in March 2016.

Boxing: Nikita Tszyu wins comeback fight against Lulzim Ismaili, undefeated, live updates, full card

Nikita Tszyu has wasted little time celebrating his return to the ring, ending his comeback fight against Lulzim Ismaili after just one round. The son of Kostya and younger brother of Tim, the promising Nikita Tszyu had a 10-0 record entering Wednesday night in his three-year professional boxing career. He took on previously undefeated Macedonian Ismaili (12-1) in a super welterweight bout at Sydney's ICC Exhibition Centre as the Aussie tested out his surgically repaired left hand for the first time in 12 months. The 27-year-old showed few issues, however, as he dropped Ismaili with a huge left hand just over a minute into the first round. Ismaili seemed to want nothing to do with Tszyu's power, surviving the first round but then refusing to get off his stool to start the second. Picture: Thomas Lisson The Tszyu family is among the most revered in Aussie boxing history, although Tim Tszyu and his camp have received some flak after he lost his world title and has fallen short in three of his past four fights. Nikita had a message for the haters shortly after his victory. 'Thank you to my team for always being there number one,' he said. 'They've copped a lot of criticism with my brother's recent fights, but we're here til the end. 'This is my family.' (Photo by Tayfun Coskun/Anadolu via Getty Images) Tszyu, who goes by the ring name 'The Butcher', demonstrated in the build-up to his first fight since August last year he is a unique character, even among boxers. Tszyu raised plenty of eyebrows when he revealed his wife's placenta in capsule form and breast milk were part of his pre-fight diet. Whatever his approach, it appears to be having the desired effect as he took another step forward in his young career. Michael Zerafa also looked strong as he dominated his fight against American Mikey Dahlman, setting up a potential showdown with Nikita Tszyu in the future. Brock Jarvis also overcame a slow start to also get back on the winner's list following his brutal defeat to Keith Thurman earlier this year. Check out how the big night of boxing unfolded below.
