UFC icon Dustin Poirier retires after defeat by Max Holloway in thrilling trilogy bout
Poirier had announced months ago that his next fight would be his last, and the end came in his home state of Louisiana, where he challenged Holloway for the 'Baddest Motherf*****' title in the main event of UFC 318.
After five thrilling rounds, in which Poirier was dropped twice and Holloway was floored once, the latter retained his belt with scorecards of 48-47, 49-46, 49-46. The victory will have been bittersweet for the Hawaiian, who lost his first two fights against Poirier: his own UFC debut in 2012, and an interim-title fight in 2019.
Holloway, 33, paid respect to the 36-year-old after the bout, before Poirier said at the post-fight press conference: 'I wanted to go show I can compete and make it close, to where I can say, 'Look, I'm still at the top of my game. I'm going out because I want to.'
'I wanted it to be a war and a drag-em-out fight.' And it was that. Holloway, a former featherweight champion who has moved up to lightweight, dropped Poirier in round one, before both fighters were floored in the second round.
Holloway landed with more volume and consistency down the stretch, securing victory and moving closer to a shot at the lightweight title.
That belt is held by Ilia Topuria, who knocked out Holloway in October to retain the featherweight title. Topuria vacated the featherweight gold in February to move up to lightweight, where he won the vacant belt by knocking out Charles Oliveira in June.
Holloway's fight with Poirier on Saturday (19 July) was his third at lightweight; his first outing at 155lb was his points loss to Poirier in 2019, as the latter claimed the interim title, before Holloway knocked out Justin Gaethje last April to win the 'BMF' belt. That knockout, which came in the very last second of a 25-minute contest, is considered by some as the greatest KO in UFC history.
Poirier, meanwhile, is deemed by many as the best UFC fighter never to win an undisputed title. After beating Holloway to win the interim lightweight title, he was submitted by regular champion Khabib Nurmagomedov while trying to unify the belts.
Poirier holds eight wins over six former MMA world champions, four of whom held UFC titles. Those fighters are Holloway, Conor McGregor, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony Pettis, Michael Chandler and Gaethje.
Poirier submitted Holloway in their first fight and also beat Pettis and Chandler via submission, while he knocked out McGregor in one of their three clashes and also stopped Alvarez and Gaethje.
Poirier lost his first fight with McGregor at featherweight in 2014, before avenging that result with a knockout of the Irishman in 2021, six months before McGregor suffered a broken leg in their trilogy bout.
The 'Diamond', who was accompanied by Louisiana rapper Lil Wayne during his ring walk on Saturday, retires with a professional record of 30-10 (1 No Contest). Often named as one of the UFC's best boxers, Poirier secured 15 of his wins via KO/TKO, while he earned eight by submission.

Another NFL player admits that he has no idea how he ended up on Trump's panel – and isn't sure the president can pronounce his name
NFL star Tua Tagovailoa has admitted that he is 'not too sure' how he ended up on President Donald Trump's Council on Sports, Nutrition, and Fitness, echoing the reaction of other football players named on the list. The Miami Dolphins quarterback said that, despite being initially unaware of his appointment to the council, the announcement was 'an honor,' and laughed off the president's poor pronunciation of his name. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, the PCSFN is a federal advisory committee that aims to promote healthy eating and physical activity for all people, 'regardless of background or ability.' Trump announced the addition of Tagovailoa to the team last week, saying that he had 'really been fantastic,' adding 'when he's not injured, he's great, he's gotta stay healthy, and he's a great guy.' It is unclear how members of the PCSFN were selected, or why. When asked about how the decision to include him had come about, Tagovailoa appeared as surprised as anyone else. 'I should ask you that question, too, brother. How did that all develop? I'm not too sure,' he said, in response to a reporter's question on the move Wednesday. His reaction was similar to fellow NFL star Saquon Barkley, of the Philadelphia Eagles, who was also named on the list, alongside Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker – who has courted controversy with his previous remarks about homosexuality. Barkley told PHLY that he was 'shocked' that his name had been included in the list, and that he had since declined to participate due to not having enough time. Another controversial figure, former NFL player Lawrence Taylor, also expressed surprise that he was named to the council, telling reporters that he 'doesn't know' what he is doing. Speaking last week, the ex-New York Giants linebacker, who is a registered sex offender, said he was 'proud to be part of this team'. 'I don't know what we're supposed to be doing but I'm here to serve, I'm here to serve you [Trump],' he said. However, despite his lack of knowledge of PCSFN, Tagovailoa said Thursday that the appointment was 'pretty cool.' 'It's an honor. I would say I don't know too much about it, but again, I think that's an honor,' he added. He also was asked about Trump butchering the pronunciation of his last name in the council member announcement. 'I don't think he's had the worst,' Tagovailoa laughed off. 'I've heard a couple worse in Alabama, but it is what it is. I don't take that to heart. It is what it is.' In an apparent impression of Trump himself, he added: ''He's a great guy, phenomenal guy, just got to stay healthy.' All of that. I like it, I enjoyed it.' As well as the NFL stars, Trump's council will include high profile sportsmen such as golf pro Bryson DeChambeau, ice hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, and former pro wrestler Paul 'Triple H' Levesque.

Conor Benn sensationally calls out UFC lightweight champion Ilia Topuria to a BARE-KNUCKLE fight ahead of his rematch against Chris Eubank Jr
Conor Benn insists any UFC fighter 'can come and get it' in a bare-knuckle fight, as he sensationally called out Ilia Topuria. Benn will be back in camp soon, with just over three months left until his rematch against Chris Eubank Jr on November 15 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The two British rivals locked horns in one of the most scintillating fights in recent history in April, with Eubank Jr coming out on top via unanimous decision. While Benn seeks to settle the score later this year, he appears to have one eye on Topuria. The Spaniard is the UFC's No 1 pound-for-pound fighter, has a 9-0 record in the promotion, and has beaten the likes of Charles Oliveira, Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. 'Whoever of these f***ing UFC fighters want to come over to boxing... dangerous game,' Benn said, before throwing a flurry of bare-knuckle punches at a heavy bag. 🚨 Conor Benn calls out Ilia Topuria for a boxing match and suggests bare knuckle: 'If anyone wants to come over from the UFC, Ilia Atora, I've got these hands, brother.' 'Disrespect us boxers? You're getting it.' via @ConorNigel — ACD MMA (@acdmma_) August 7, 2025 He then name-dropped the UFC lightweight champion, and said that it would take £10million for him to agree to the crossover. It is believed that he received an £8m windfall after his defeat by Eubank earlier this year. Benn continued: 'Or any of these MMA lot that want to come over to boxing - if you fancy some of it, you can come and get it. Nasty. F`***ing bare knuckle. Bare knuckle. 10 bar, 10 bar. Sign me up, I'll fight anybody bare knuckle. 'Anyone wants to come over from the UFC, I've seen a lot of people talk about Ilia Topuria. Ilia, I've got these hands, brother. 'Disrespect us boxers? You're getting it. Anybody wants this smoke, anybody who wants to come over, no problem.' Benn then conceded that, while he welcomes a bout in the ring against almost anyone, he would not even think about entering the octagon to test his luck against an MMA fighter. The 28-year-old added: 'Listen, I ain't stupid enough to go in the cage. I would never go in the cage. You won't catch me getting in the cage.
