US hunter reportedly killed by buffalo during expedition in South Africa

An American game hunter was killed by a buffalo he was stalking during a hunting expedition in South Africa over the weekend, according to multiple reports. Asher Watkins, 52, of Texas, died on 3 August while tracking a 1.3-ton Cape buffalo in South Africa's Limpopo province, according to a statement from Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CV Safaris), the company that organized the hunting trip. 'It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend Asher Watkins from the USA,' CV Safaris said in the statement, obtained by the Metro new outlet and other publications. 'On Sunday 3rd August, while on a hunting safari with us in South Africa's Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by an unwounded buffalo he was tracking together with one of our professional hunters and one of our trackers,' the statement adds. According to Metro, the buffalo suddenly charged at Watkins at 35 mph (56 km/h). 'This is a devastating incident, and our hearts go out to his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,' the company said, adding that it is 'doing everything we can to support the family members who are here with us and those back in the United States as they navigate this tragic loss'. Metro reported that Watkins' brother Amon, mother Gwen and stepfather Tony were waiting for him at the safari lodge when the incident occurred, and CV Safaris also said it was in touch with Watkins's teenage daughter, Savannah, and his ex-wife, Courtney. A warning on the CV Safari website notes the dangers of Cape buffaloes. 'No species on the planet has a more fearsome reputation than a Cape buffalo,' the statement reads, adding that the buffaloes are 'responsible for several deaths and many injuries to hunters each year'. Watkins's ex-wife also reportedly confirmed his death on social media, according to People magazine, writing that Watkins died on Sunday 'suddenly in a tragic accident involving a Cape buffalo while on a hunting trip in South Africa'. 'It's a reality that's still hard to put into words,' she added. 'Our hearts are heavy as we navigate the days ahead, especially for Savannah as she grieves her dad.' A Texas native and Baylor University graduate, Watkins was a managing partner at Watkins Ranch Group, affiliated with Briggs Freeman and LIV Sotheby's International Realty. His company biography described him as someone who 'spent the better part of his life in the outdoors and on ranches' and a 'proud and devoted father'. Watkins had a Facebook page where he shared hunting photos, often posing beside animals he had killed, including deer and mountain lions. Solve the daily Crossword

Body found after search for woman swept away by flood

Police have found the body of a woman swept away after a car tried to drive through floodwaters in a popular wine region. The 26-year-old was a passenger in a car which became stranded in Black Creek in Rothbury, in the NSW Hunter Valley, on Saturday evening. Emergency services were able to save a 27-year-old woman believed to have been driving the car, but could not find the younger woman. A multi-agency search made the grim discovery on Wednesday, locating the body believed to be that of the missing woman. Officers were told the duo had attempted to drive a Mini SUV through floodwaters before it became stuck. We're continuing to support communities affected by flooding, with more than 2,500 incidents across NSW. Over 2,300 volunteers are currently on the ground, working closely with flood-impacted communities across the New England, MNC and Hunter regions. — NSW SES (@NSWSES) August 5, 2025 The flooding was triggered by heavy rain and unprecedented snow that wreaked havoc across NSW over the weekend. Tens of thousands of people spent Saturday night without power as between 50 and 100mm of rain drenched parts of the mid-north coast and northern Hunter. The NSW State Emergency Service had responded to more than 2500 incidents including 39 flood rescues by Wednesday morning. One of those rescues was of a 40-year-old man stuck in a tree who was later swept into Black Creek. He was taken to a hospital for a medical check.

Los Angeles firefighters free woman trapped inside chimney at San Fernando park

Los Angeles firefighters on Tuesday rescued a woman who was trapped inside of a small chimney at a park in San Fernando. They were called to Recreation Park, located in the 200 block of Park Avenue, at around 7:30 p.m. after learning of the approximately 30-year-old woman who was found about three-feet deep inside of a chimney," said a news release from LAFD. Crews said that she was conscious and alert as she was stabilized and prepared for rescue. They hoisted her to safety "via skillful use of a rope system" from within the "chimney/exhaust flue atop a small municipal outbuilding," said another LAFD release. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital in fair condition, firefighters said. San Fernando Police Department officers were investigating the matter, as the woman did not seem to be affiliated with the city's parks and recreation department that was using the outbuilding for storage at the park. Investigators say that they were called to the scene for reports of a woman who was dancing and waving her arms on the roof before she climbed into the chimney and got stuck. Other people at the park called 911 after hearing her screaming from inside. They did not say if she would be charged for the incident. There was no structural damage to the building during the rescue, according to LAFD.
