Howe on Botman, Joelinton and club crest proposals

BBC News16-05-2025

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Arsenal (kick-off 16:30 BST).Here are the key lines from his news conference:Howe said he "wasn't sure" about Sven Botman's availability for the game but added: "We don't think it's a serious injury and we'll give him a chance to be fit."On Joelinton: "He's working away behind the scenes. Typical Joe he's absolutely foot to the floor trying to get fit because he wants to be involved. The biggest possibility is that we don't see him again this season and we'll get him ready for next year."With Kieran Trippier not "fit for this weekend" Howe admitted his squad "can look thin very quickly" when exposed to a "run of injuries".On Champions League qualification: "It's not done yet and the picture can change game-to-game. Nothing is achieved until its achieved so we have to be really single minded in that and not get distracted."On a manager of the season nomination: "I always think it's nice to be nominated for different things because ultimately it hopefully means you've had a successful season so I'm proud to be on that list."Howe confirmed he had "no idea" before the club's announcement to change its crest, adding: "I am a great believer in respecting tradition and history but you have to move forward if something needs to be changed for the betterment of the football club."On 'needle' between Newcastle and Arsenal: "Needle is your word but I would say competitive. We've been physical, aggressive and I think we have to be when we are at our best. We'll be competitive to try and win and I want to see that motivation run through our team in every game that we play regardless of the team."On results against Arsenal: "It bodes well for us, but these games we've played against Arsenal this year have been very difficult. We've come out on the right side of them but the games have been tight and so we go in to Sunday with confidence but with a realisation that we need to be at our best as we have been against them this season."Listen to full match commentary of Arsenal vs Newcastle United on BBC Radio 5 live from 16:30 BST on SundayFollow all of Friday's Premier League news conferences and the rest of the day's football news

But Taylor is not a fan of the setup, saying: "It's very tiring… I think they do need to look at it now. "It needs revamping, that's what I think. A lot of the players are not enjoying it and you can tell." Fans also criticised the repetitive format after last week's final and so did legend Steve Beaton, labelling it "boring". But Taylor has been entertained by the standard of play on show throughout this year's Premier League. He added: "Luke and Luke are really setting the standards at the moment. "The levels they're producing and how they're bringing the best out of each other — it's incredible for the rest of the sport. Lambourn stuns red-hot favourite Delacroix to land master trainer Aidan O'Brien an 11th Derby

AIDAN O'BRIEN'S No2 Lambourn stunned his big hope Delacroix to land the Derby - as a load of the big guns flopped in the £1.5million Epsom blockbuster. Lambourn, who was sent off 13-2, hit the front early and was never for catching under loyal jockey Wayne Lordan. Ryan Moore never really got into it on red-hot favourite Delacroix and finished ninth, beaten 16 lengths. And, for once, the world's best jockey had to play second best to Lordan - who he beat into second in the Oaks on Friday. There was a huge result for syndicate Middleham Park as their 50-1 Lazy Griff, trained by Charlie Johnston, came second. While Aidan's son Joseph was third with 28-1 Tennessee Stud. Juddmonte had the fourth home with 50-1 New Ground. O'Brien said: "Wayne gave him an incredible ride - he is a great fella and has done so much hard work throughout the years. "The horse is very straightforward and Wayne knew he would stay. "I'm delighted for Wayne and couldn't be happier. "The lads put in everything and I am just delighted to be on their coat tails!"
