Crater-ridden NH 66 on Surathkal-Nanthoor stretch drives motorists into tizzy
While the Authority could undertake total road renewal of about 2 km stretch between NITK and Surathkal flyover, early rains thwarted its plans of renewing the remaining stretch between Surahtkal and Baikampady and repairing the Baikampady-Nanthoor stretch, leaving the highway in a mess.
Series of potholes and craters dot the right hand-side of the carriageways, that is, next to the medians, caused by constant waterlogging and wear and tear on account of regular movement of heavy goods vehicles. The entire stretch lacks proper rainwater drainage system on the carriageways as a result of which water stagnates next to the medians.
The top layer of both the carriageways on Baikampady-Kulur stretch that passes through New Mangalore Port, has completely worn out presenting an awful picture. While cars and other bigger vehicles somehow negotiate the stretch with difficulty, two-wheeler riders risk their life to pass through the stretch. Two-wheeler rider, Surathkal Janatha Colony resident Mahammed Ashraf who fell on the road in his attempt to negotiate a crater at Panambur, was crushed under the wheels of a tanker truck on June 9.
Traffic snarls
As the vehicles move slowly to negotiate the battered stretches of the highway, traffic snarls and traffic jams have become an order of the day, rued Manjunath Prasad, who regularly rides between Surathkal and Mangaluru. While motorists would drive or ride almost blindfolded when it rains, they wade through clouds of dust when it shines, he regretted.
Delayed start
Though the Port Connectivity Road, NH 75 between B.C. Road-Nanthoor and NH 66 between Nanthoor-NITK Surathkal was developed by a special purpose vehicle, New Mangalore Port Road Company Ltd., the SPV had abandoned the maintenance work long ago. Dakshina Kannada Member of Parliament Captain Brijesh Chowta with his persistent efforts, got funds sanctioned from Union Road Transport Ministry for total renewal and repair through NHAI.
While the contractor was finalised on April 10, the work commenced on April 24 even as it began to rain heavily from May third week.

New rly under bridge to ease traffic at Darrah Nullah
Jaipur: Relief is finally in sight for commuters who endured years of traffic congestion at Darrah Nullah on the Kota–Jhalawar National Highway (NH-52). The Central govt granted administrative and financial approval for the construction of a new Railway Under Bridge (RUB) near Arch Bridge No. 148, between Kanwarpura and Darrah railway stations. The project, estimated to cost Rs 9.98 crore, will be executed by the West Central Railway as a deposit work. The RUB will be constructed at KM 297.7 on NH-52 and is expected to significantly ease traffic flow between Kota and Jhalawar. Construction is scheduled to begin shortly, with targeted completion within stipulated timeframe. The eight-km stretch through Darrah Nullah — a narrow, single-lane passage wedged between the broader four-lane highway — long posed a serious threat to commuters, with frequent accidents, prolonged traffic jams, and seasonal waterlogging. Rajesh Soni, a frequent traveller, said, "Traffic on this route increased as it connects Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Heavy vehicle movement is common, and traffic jams lasting up to 12 hours have been reported here." Despite the commencement of toll collection at Mandana and Bheed Mandi (Rs 165 and Rs 85, respectively), no structural improvements were made. Agencies including the NHAI, PWD, and the forest department continued shifting responsibility. Since the stretch falls within the Mukundra Tiger Reserve, the forest department raised objections to any major construction without proper clearance. A four-lane elevated road was earlier proposed but failed to gain approval .

These 15 Gzb roads saw 50% crash deaths
Ghaziabad: Over 50% of road fatalities in Ghaziabad were reported on just 15 key roads, including Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Meerut Road and GT Road, in the last three years. A study, conducted between Jan 2022 and April 2025 by the traffic police and NGO Save Life Foundation, recorded 1,219 fatalities in 1,163 road crashes across the city. It also found that 305 people involved in these crashes were grievously injured, while 71 sustained minor injuries. Additional DCP (traffic) Sachchidanand said the highest number of road crash fatalities was reported from Delhi-Meerut Expressway, which saw 158 deaths in 143 crashes, followed by Meerut Road, where 109 died in 105 crashes, and GT Road that saw 105 deaths in 101 crashes. Noida Authority set to build 35 traffic booths in city
Noida: The Noida Authority is planning to construct around 35 modern traffic booths across the city to enhance the working conditions of traffic personnel and streamline vehicular movement in high-traffic zones. These booths will be installed at those points where traffic volume is consistently high, particularly during peak hours. These include busy intersections, roundabouts, and identified "dark spots" where traffic regulation is currently hampered due to the absence of infrastructure. Authority officials have nearly finalised the design and are expected to float tenders for construction soon. "These booths are crucial to protect traffic personnel from extreme weather conditions while also offering them a vantage point to manage traffic more effectively," said a senior Authority official. These booths will serve as shelters and operational posts to improve traffic monitoring and ease congestion, especially during peak hours, accidents, or rainfall, given Noida's heavy daily vehicle movement from Delhi and nearby districts. The Authority plans to complete the construction and installation of the booths over the next few months, pending the finalisation of the tendering process.
