BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — With St. Patrick's Day coming up Monday, some local businesses are giving the community a chance to celebrate.
Events throughout the weekend may be impacted due to the threat of severe weather. Some event organizers already have weather plans in place.
Here's a list of some of the St. Patrick's Day celebrations that are planned in the Birmingham area:
Innisfree Irish Pub St. Patrick's Day events — March 13- 17
At the moment, St. Patrick's Day celebrations will be continued as planned. The organizers of the events say that weather plans are in place. More information can be found here.
St. Patrick's Day-themed murder mystery dinner at Arlington Historic House — March 14
Tickets for this event can be found here. Organizers have not yet mentioned any weather plans.
St. Patty's Day Southside 5K — March 15
According to the race's website, the organizers are monitoring the weather conditions. A decision for the race will be made on Friday.
Beef's at the Grove 15th Annual St. Patrick's Day Celebration — March 15
This event will have a $20 cover for adults. Children 12 and under will get free admission. The organizers plan to make a decision regarding weather plans on Thursday.
St. Patrick's Day at Siluria Brewing — March 16
This event starts at 4 p.m., and it will feature drinks and a food truck. According to organizers, five 'gold' coins will be hidden in the venue for guests to find and turn in for a prize.
Cahaba Brewing Company's ShamROCK + SHOP — March 15- 16
Due to the threat of severe weather, Cahaba Brewing Company is moving their vendor market to Sunday. Live music, drink specials and more are still planned for Saturday. A list of vendors, musicians and food trucks can be found here.
The Edge Homewood's Shamrock Social — March 16
This event will start at 12 p.m. with a screening of the SEC College Basketball Championship game. Afterwards, guests can enjoy live music, kids' activities and more.

Lifeguards needed in central Alabama this summer
HOMEWOOD, Ala. (WIAT) — Thousands of Alabamians will head to the pool Monday to celebrate Memorial Day. Madeline Rooks is in her first year of lifeguarding. She was certified last week through a class with the American Red Cross. 'It was pretty difficult, but I feel like most people are able to do it,' said Rooks. Right now, the Alabama Red Cross says there's a need statewide for lifeguards like Rooks. According to Red Cross spokesperson David Rauch, lifeguards are the best defense when it comes to water safety. 'As we all know, Alabama weather is extremely hot, and one of the best ways to get away from it is to be in the pool, be in the lake, be in the pond. One of the best things you can do is be in an area that is lifeguarded,' Rauch said. Memorial Day events, ceremonies around central Alabama The Red Cross is working to get more lifeguards in the state and educate people about water safety. 'Water safety is critically important. Make sure you teach your kids to swim, and make sure you teach them to ask permission to go in the water before they go near the water,' Rauch said. 'This time of the year, it's an easy thing to prevent. It's a tragedy you don't want to happen to you, you can go to our website, or if you go to and find out classes for young children that may be beneficial in helping them learn about water safety.' Rooks says being a lifeguard has more perks than just keeping people safe. 'I just think it really teaches people how to work, how to be on time and how to be mature, and it's a fun summer job,' cshe said. Memorial Day events, ceremonies around central Alabama
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — People in central Alabama will have plenty of opportunities to recognize Memorial Day on Monday. Here are three Memorial Day ceremonies to look out for: Alabama National Cemetery The Alabama National Cemetery will host its 17th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. The ceremony will take place at the main flag assembly area of the cemetery, and it will last about an hour. More information can be found here. Veterans Memorial Park The Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority will host a ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be moved indoors to University Mall. More information on this Memorial Day program can be found on the Veterans Memorial Park website. American Village Montevallo's American Village has events scheduled throughout the day. Admission to American Village will be free, with the campus opening to the public at 10 a.m. The Memorial Day service, followed by a wreath laying, will take place at 11 a.m. More events will follow. Alabama weather radios to be out of service for 72 hours
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — NOAA weather radios are not working due to a planned software outage, according to the National Weather Service. Officials are urging the public to have multiple ways to get alerted about severe weather ahead of tomorrow expected storms. The National Weather Service says nationwide systems are being upgraded and they have a July 1 deadline to do so. Here in Alabama, the National Weather Service planned this outage months ago, hoping this would be a quiet weather week but that's not the case. A message that says the weather station is off air will be played until at least Wednesday on NOAA weather radios throughout Alabama. National Weather Service Warning System Meteorologist John De Block says even though the radios are off air, his office will continue their work during tomorrow's storms. 'We are going to be working closely with our partners, our media partners, extra communications, and the chat program we have to give them the latest information so the meteorologists can get on air and let the people know. We are going to be issuing the watches and warnings still here, they just can't go over the weather radios unfortunately,' remarked De Block. Leeds Creek Bank Festival postponed to May 24 The outage is due to a planned hardware upgrade which De Block says will allow the National Weather Service to use the latest technology over the radio. The upgrade was planned months ago before the weather service knew about tomorrow's expected severe weather. 'Unfortunately in Alabama, tornado season runs from January 1 to December 31. We picked a time that we thought would have less of an impact, unfortunately it turns out we have some severe weather in mid-May. We put it off as long as we could but we have to get it done,' added De Block. With weather radios being out, the Jefferson County EMA is urging everyone to have multiple ways to get weather alerts. Phones and apps are a great way to keep informed if you don't have a cell phone. EMA Deputy Director Chris Tate says there are steps you should take. 'They need to be reaching out to friends and families to help support them during this time, I guarantee someone has those cell phones with different apps available to them. The Jeff Co. alerts app will call them to their landline, it will also send emails if they have those,' remarked Tate. The CBS 42 app is a great way to stay alerted to weather conditions.
