He said all public transport services including trains will continue operating as usual on the day. Loke stressed that the Madani government upholds the right to peaceful assembly, even for groups opposed to the administration. 'We must not return to an era that suppressed democracy to the point of shutting down Parliament,' he said. He added that public transport must keep running to ensure that the majority of Malaysians can carry out their weekend plans without disruption. Loke took the opportunity to remind Klang Valley users that the subsidised MY50 travel pass can now be renewed online via the Touch 'n Go app. He also highlighted the RM6 MyCity Pass, which offers unlimited daily travel on LRT, MRT, BRT, Monorail and Rapid Bus services, and will be digitised by year-end. The minister then repeated his call for all rally-goers to ride public transport and help ease traffic flow in the capital. City police previously said they will not close any roads for the rally, but will deploy additional manpower to 15 train stations in the vicinity to facilitate movement. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Govt mulls foreign investor rule shift to boost MSMEs
THE government is mulling the possibility of enhancing localisation requirements for foreign investors for the benefit of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Deputy Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Liew Chin Tong said this is part of efforts to create a resilient ecosystem that allows local companies to reap spillover benefits and develop into technology-based multinational corporations (MNCs). 'To ensure investments lead to meaningful gains such as quality jobs for Malaysians and the development of local technology ecosystems, Miti and the Finance Ministry will introduce the New Investment Incentive Framework (NIIF) in the third quarter of this year,' he said. Liew said the government is committed to transforming Malaysia's role in global supply chains by strengthening national resilience and nurturing homegrown tech firms in strategic sectors such as semiconductors. 'There must be a mindset shift. For too long, MSMEs have been seen only as support players for foreign MNCs. 'The new thinking emphasises the potential of Malaysian firms to become global technology-based MNCs,' he said. Liew added that the government is determined to lead the shift from being a hub for 'Made in Malaysia' outsourced production to 'Made by Malaysia' technological innovation. He pointed to the RM25bil GEAR-uP programme under the Finance Ministry, which aims to catalyse high-growth, high-value sectors such as semiconductors and energy transition, while also empowering marginalised communities and nurturing local talent. On the US trade policy, Liew described the reduced 19% retaliatory tariff rate on Malaysia as a success, saying Malaysia had engaged in 'complex and time-sensitive' negotiations to secure the agreed rate. Malaysia's exports to the United States accounted for 13.2% of the country's total exports in 2024, which amounted to RM1.508 trillion, he added. To mitigate the effects of the US tariffs, he said Miti and its agency Matrade are working to diversify Malaysia's export markets. This includes exploring non-traditional destinations and strengthening the export network to fast-growing emerging markets such as Central Asia, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Asean.

Yong: Scrap tax rule on NGOs
Published on: Thursday, August 07, 2025 Published on: Thu, Aug 07, 2025 Text Size: Yong pointing at the Practice Note 1/2025 at the LHDN website. Kota Kinabalu: The Government is strongly urged to rescind its move to tax the fundraising activities of community organisations and associations because the funds raised by them and other voluntary bodies are badly needed for the associations' own needs. The new tax rule is also causing confusion, distress and anxiety to society and community leaders, said former Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yong Teck Lee. Advertisement The Practice Note 1/2025, issued on March 24 by the Inland Revenue Department, extended the definition of taxable person as a 'body of persons' that includes community associations. 'I echo the views of Tan Sri T.C. Goh, President of the Gabungan Persatuan Cina Sabah (HuaZhong), that this new tax will create unnecessary burden for 10 of thousands of active NGOS nationwide. 'Any excess from fundraising activities is not for commercial purposes but for long-term community programmes.' Non-compliance could expose community leaders to criminal charges, Yong said. Advertisement He said adding to the burden of yet another new tax is the scary hazard of having to comply with new tax regulations because any misstep or mistake or non-compliance, however unintended, could expose the association leaders to criminal charges of tax evasion. 'It is a fact that most, if not all, associations cannot afford the professional services of accountants and auditors and tax planners. 'Associations leaders consist mainly of selfless people who spend their own time and money on social and community service,' said Yong who is Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP) President. He said community fundraising itself is already a very arduous task, with community leaders literally having to beg sponsors. 'The community leaders and sponsors are the same ordinary business people who have recently been hit by SST (Sales and Services tax), e-invoicing on all transactions and stamp duties on employment contracts. 'In spite of optimistic statements coming from ministers, the reality is that the business environment is subdued. 'Ministers, please do something. Our elected representatives and Ministers who have been accorded VIP treatment at association functions should speak up and do something before even more damage is inflicted on community organisations and the welfare of society,' Yong said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
