Troy Parrott, Kane, Mbappe… where Dubliner features among top scorers in 2025

Irish Daily Mirror10 hours ago
Troy Parrott's staggering goalscoring exploits so far this season for AZ Alkmaar have put him in the company of European football's top strikers.
The Ireland international has made a breathtaking start to the 2025/26 campaign, scoring nine goals in his first six games - six in four European ties and three in two Eredivisie games.
Parrott now has 18 goals for the calendar year - and that has earned him a place among the 10 most prolific goalscorers of 2025 so far.
Football365 has compiled a list of the most dangerous goalscorers of the year so far, including players that feature in Europe's 10 highest ranked leagues.
Goals scored in all club competitions are tallied - and Parrott's 18 have him just one behind Bayern Munich's Harry Kane and Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski.
Also featured on the list are Borussia Dortmund's Serhou Guirassy and Victor Osimhen of Galatasaray, while Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe leads the way on 29.
You can view the full list here.
Parrott's exploits so far this term have raised questions about his future - questions that AZ manager Maarten Martens is clearly eager to shut down.
He was speaking after last weekend's 2-2 draw with FC Volendam when he was asked whether Parrott and fellow striker Mexx Meerdink would still be at the club after the window shuts at the end of the month.
He issued a short and snappy response, indicating that he has no plans to off-load either of his forwards.
'We want to keep them both, and that's going to happen,' he said.
Meanwhile, here's the list of Parrott's 18 goals so far in 2025, a tally he hopes to add to on Thursday when AZ Alkmaar travel to Levski Sofia for their Europa Conference League play-off first leg.

Brendan Rodgers refuses to comment on Jamie Vardy to Celtic rumours

CELTIC MANAGER BRENDAN Rodgers does not anticipate any last-gasp signings ahead of the Champions League play-offs as he declined to comment on reports linking Jamie Vardy with a move to Parkhead. Celtic have until 11pm on Tuesday night to make up to two amendments to their European squad before hosting Kairat Almaty in the first leg on Wednesday. Advertisement But Rodgers looks like he will need to continue waiting for the new attacking options he has been looking for. When asked if he now expected to go with the players who are already in the building, Rodgers said: 'That's what I am feeling at this moment in time. The players that we have will be the players that I trust that can do the job. 'If we can get some players in before then, that would be amazing but the focus has been very much on what is here at this moment.' Reports on Monday claimed that 38-year-old striker Vardy had his heart set on a move to Celtic Park after leaving Leicester at the end of last season. 'Listen, I would not speak about any individual player,' said Rodgers. 'Of course I worked really well with Jamie, he was brilliant for me in my time at Leicester. But there's been so many names floated about. I wouldn't disclose either way.'

Brendan Rodgers makes Champions League progress the short-term target for Celtic

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers is confident his squad is strong enough to qualify for the Champions League - but he knows they would need to strengthen if they got there. Rodgers was not anticipating any late amendments to his European squad ahead of Tuesday's 11pm deadline on the eve of their play-off first leg against Kairat Almaty at Parkhead. The Northern Irishman previously stressed he was in need of attacking reinforcements following the departures of Kyogo Furuhashi and Nicolas Kuhn this year and a long-term injury for Jota. But it has been two weeks since their most recent arrival, 19-year-old Manchester City loan defender Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, and Rodgers was focused on getting past the Kazakh opposition with familiar players. When asked if his squad was strong enough for the Champions League, he said: "Firstly we want to qualify of course and, if it's with this group of players, I'm confident that we can do that. Going forward, it's clear we would have to improve the squad." Rodgers was then asked if he would get the additions he was looking for when the board discover whether they have Champions League income. "I don't know," he said. "I don't know. We just play the game and we'll see where we're at at the end of the window." The 52-year-old has been keen to play down transfer talk in recent weeks after making his feelings clear earlier in the summer. "I'm not going to get into a situation where I look frustrated or am frustrated because that transfers on to the players that I have, and those guys have been brilliant. "If we get somebody in, great. If not, then we'll go with what we've got. We'll do everything we can to try and ensure all the details are right for the game and see if we can take Celtic back into the Champions League again. "I've had no injuries and I believe that the quality of our game and the intensity that we want to work at can hopefully be enough to see us through. But these games will always be tough games." Rodgers has been keen to ensure uncertainty over potential outgoing transfers also does not affect players. The likes of Daizen Maeda have been linked with Premier League suitors. "I mentioned this a few weeks ago to the players, I think it's important to just set the narrative for them because there's so much noise, especially as it ramps up towards the end," he said. "I've been in enough changing rooms to know how stability can be lost in this moment because some players will be thinking are they staying, are they going, but in the midst of that you've got really important games. "So I've already mentioned this to players about respecting and acknowledging that it is a difficult part of the season, however, the money will be in your bank every month and it'll be from Celtic and whilst it is, you need to perform. "And in fairness to the players, they've been brilliant with that. You see it in their attitude in the game, the energy in the games." Reports on Monday claimed that 38-year-old striker Jamie Vardy had his heart set on a move to Celtic Park after leaving Leicester. But Rodgers said: "Listen, I would not speak about any individual player. Of course I worked really well with Jamie, he was brilliant for me in my time at Leicester. But there's been so many names floated about. I wouldn't disclose either way."

Galway teenager John Shortt storms into world final

Ireland's John Shortt has stormed into the 100m backstroke final at the World Aquatics Junior Championships in Otopenia, Romania. The 18-year-old, Ireland's only representative at the championships, set a new Irish junior record in qualifying. Shortt, the 2025 European junior champion in the event, is now the second fastest Irishman ever over the distance after a swim of 53.80 in Tuesday's semi-final. Only Shane Ryan's 2019 Irish record of 53.73 is faster. The Galway native cruised through the heats in 54.39 in fourth overall. Tuesday's first semi-final saw Shortt, and American Gavin Keogh (53.52) take the top two spots for Wednesday's final, the second semi-final won by neutral athlete Georgii Iokevlev in 53.90. "I am very very happy with that swim, a PB which is nice," said Shortt. "You know since trials (in April) I haven't been 53 in that event, so to be 53.8 there I'm absolutely delighted with that. It's going to be a really really close final tomorrow, three of us going 53's and the Aussie going 54.0. It's going to be a very very packed final (on Wednesday), but I've just got to keep doing my own thing and I'll be ok. "I was very surprised as well with that swim, because coming off the back of (the world senior championships) it's been - to be completely honest - a very lonely ten days in between. So just want to give massive credit to (my coach) John Szaranek for keeping me going these past ten days or so because it's just been the two of us really. It's been great and I've loved it and I really want to end the season on a big high." The final will take place at 4:02pm on Wednesday.
