Egypt will not shift from food to cash subsidies without public consent: Supply Minister - Society
In remarks to Sada El-Balad TV on Monday night, Farouk noted that subsidies cost the state EGP 234 billion—EGP 100 billion more than the amount allocated for them in the annual public budget.
He mentioned presenting Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly with proposals about the subsidy system shift. However, no agreement has been reached regarding the cash support amount, with the cabinet waiting for the National Dialogue results on the subsidies' probable value.
The current subsidy system allows citizens to buy key food staples via subsidy ration cards at lower-than-market prices, including rice, pasta, cooking oil, and bread.
In December, Egypt's House of Representatives, in principle, approved a government-drafted bill that directs cash-based subsidies to citizens who fall below the poverty line and lack access to social insurance.
According to the draft bill, a Takaful and Karama Fund, affiliated with the Ministry of Social Solidarity, will be established to provide payments to targeted citizens. The fund's resources will come from the state budget, private contributions, and investments.
The Takaful and Karama cash support programme, launched in 2015, is a key pillar of Egypt's social protection system. It offers financial assistance to low-income families, elderly people, and individuals with special needs, particularly in Upper Egypt.
In February, Egypt increased cash support allocations for Takaful and Karama beneficiaries to EGP 41 billion annually in FY2024/2025, providing over EGP 3 billion to 4.7 million families monthly.
The latest figure issued by the state's statistical agency, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS), was in September 2000 when it said Egypt's poverty rate reached 29.7 percent in the 2019/2020 fiscal year.
World Bank figures issued at the end of 2022 show that 32.5 percent of Egypt's population lives in extreme poverty.
According to CAPMAS, the population reached 104.4 million in December 2022.

Trump Calls for Intel CEO's Resignation amid China Ties Allegations
Taarek Refaat U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday called for the immediate resignation of Intel's newly appointed CEO, Lip-Bu Tan, amid rising concerns over his alleged investments in Chinese tech firms, including some with links to China's military. In a sharply worded post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said he was 'deeply puzzled' by Tan's position at the helm of the American chipmaking giant, adding, 'There is no other solution to this problem.' Following Trump's comments, Intel shares fell more than 4% in pre-market trading, as investor concerns mounted over potential political and national security ramifications. Concerns about Tan's ties to China had been building for months. In April 2025, a Reuters investigation revealed that Tan, either personally or through investment vehicles he founded or managed, had poured capital into hundreds of Chinese companies, including several operating in advanced manufacturing and semiconductor technologies. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Eli Lilly Loses $100 Billion in Market Value, Airbnb Tumbles on Travel Demand Fears
Taarek Refaat Two American giants, Eli Lilly and Airbnb, suffered staggering market losses on Thursday, rattling investor confidence and triggering sharp sector-wide sell-offs. Pharmaceutical heavyweight Eli Lilly saw its shares plummet by more than 14%, closing at their lowest level in over 18 months. The sell-off wiped out a staggering $100 billion from the company's market capitalization in a single trading session. The sharp decline came after disappointing late-stage trial results for the company's highly anticipated oral weight-loss drug, Orforglipron. The drug helped patients lose an average of 12.4% of their body weight at the highest dose (36 mg), falling short of investor expectations of around 14%. The market reaction was swift and brutal, reflecting the high stakes and intense competition in the booming weight-loss drug market, where rivals like Novo Nordisk have set a high bar with injectable drugs such as Wegovy. "Expectations were sky-high, and unfortunately Eli Lilly didn't clear the bar this time," said a healthcare analyst at Morgan Street Research. "Investors were hoping for a category-defining breakthrough. These results, while solid, just weren't enough." Airbnb Suffers Biggest Drop in 9 Months Meanwhile, Airbnb shares fell by 8%, marking the company's worst single-day performance in nine months. The drop followed the company's downbeat forecast for the second half of 2025, raising concerns about slowing travel demand. The home-rental platform warned of moderating growth, citing signs that American travelers, especially those with tighter budgets, are becoming more cautious amid persistent inflation and rising fees. "After a strong rebound in consumer confidence last month, investors were caught off guard," said a travel industry analyst. "The expectation was for a sustained summer surge, but Airbnb's forecast paints a more cautious picture." The warning has cast a shadow over the broader vacation rental sector, which had been enjoying a recovery fueled by optimism from other major travel companies. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

Ukraine Seeks New Financial Aid Program with IMF amid Ongoing War
Taarek Refaat Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced Thursday that his government is exploring a new financial assistance program with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), aimed at supporting the country both during its ongoing conflict with Russia and in its eventual post-war recovery. The announcement followed high-level talks between Zelensky and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. 'We discussed a new financial aid program that would strengthen the resilience of Ukrainians both now and in the post-war period,' Zelensky wrote on Telegram. He added that Ukraine is 'ready to take the necessary steps quickly,' and noted that the government is already working toward implementing the required measures. The latest discussions come just weeks after the IMF approved the eighth review of Ukraine's existing cooperation program under the Extended Fund Facility (EFF), unlocking a $500 million disbursement in late June. That funding is part of a broader $15.5 billion, 48-month support package approved in March 2023. Zelensky's remarks signal Kyiv's intention to secure longer-term financial stability, even as the war with Russia continues to impose heavy economic, social, and security costs on the country. read more CBE: Deposits in Local Currency Hit EGP 5.25 Trillion Morocco Plans to Spend $1 Billion to Mitigate Drought Effect Gov't Approves Final Version of State Ownership Policy Document Egypt's Economy Expected to Grow 5% by the end of 2022/23- Minister Qatar Agrees to Supply Germany with LNG for 15 Years Business Oil Prices Descend amid Anticipation of Additional US Strategic Petroleum Reserves Business Suez Canal Records $704 Million, Historically Highest Monthly Revenue Business Egypt's Stock Exchange Earns EGP 4.9 Billion on Tuesday Business Wheat delivery season commences on April 15 News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results
