'I Invite you to my funeral': 83-year-old actor stages her final farewell
This was no ordinary festival, but a scene in her upcoming film, "Between Cheongmyeong and Gogu" (working title), directed by actor-director Yoo Jun-sang.
The scene being filmed was a funeral -- specifically, that of the character 'She,' played by Park. But in a rare and deeply personal twist, the mourners weren't just anybody. Park had invited 150 friends and colleagues to be the bereaved. It was like a rehearsal, a trial run, for her funeral.
Yoo's fifth directorial work follows the final days of an aging actress grappling with memory loss. He wrote the screenplay, based on the story of Park's life and career.
Rather than a somber, solemn mood, the set reflected a request Park had sent to her guests a month earlier. The message, titled 'Obituary: Park Jeong-ja's Last Curtain Call,' outlined the date and location of her 'funeral' and included a poetic invitation:
"I invite you to my funeral. Who decided funerals must be solemn? It will be different today."
Instead of tears, bring laughter. Flowers are not needed, bring memories instead. Bring old stories and light jokes, and the moments we laughed together."
Those who answered the call included some of Korea's foremost cultural figures: former Busan International Film Festival director Kim Dong-ho; actors Kang Bu-ja, Nam Myung-ryul, Yang Hee-kyung, Park Ji-il, Gil Hae-yeon and Jung Kyung-soon; musical actor Kim Ho-young; singer Jang Sa-ik; Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture President Song Hyeong-jong; Sejong Center CEO Ahn Ho-sang and others.
The attendees carried small banners that read the titles of Park's many plays.
Her message concluded with a final note that hinted at her philosophy on life, death and performance. "This is not a farewell, but a pause. Not an end, but an intermission. My stage is not yet over, even if I am no longer seen."

Uhm once again tackles a role centered on resilience and reinvention, following JTBC's 'Doctor Cha' in 2023, where she played a middle-aged woman rediscovering her dreams. 'I did think that the story of finding one's dream and taking on a challenge might feel similar to 'Doctor Cha,' but Cheong-ja's journey, starting from small, supporting acting roles, was very moving. Just as Jeong-suk (in 'Doctor Cha') showed that 'age or anything else doesn't matter,' I thought Cheong-ja could also tell a story of chasing one's dreams, but in a completely different way,' she explained.

Claudia Kim to host BIFF closing ceremony
Marvel actress joins Lee Byung-hun as festival bookends for milestone edition The Busan International Film Festival has tapped actor Claudia Kim as solo host for its closing ceremony on Sept. 26, organizers announced Monday. Kim will present the inaugural Busan Awards to winners of the festival's new competitive section — marking BIFF's historic shift to competitive status after 29 years as a non-competitive event. Kim bookends the festival's 30th edition, whose opening ceremony will be hosted by actor Lee Byung-hun. The festival runs Sept. 17-26 at the Busan Cinema Center and venues across the city. The event will screen approximately 240 films, up from 224 last year. Known as Soo-hyun in Korea, Kim broke ground as the first Korean actor in a Marvel film with "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015). She's since built a dual-track career spanning Hollywood blockbusters — including "Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald" (2018) and "The Dark Tower" (2017) — and Korean productions such as Netflix's "Gyeongseong Creature" (2023-2024) and "The Atypical Family" (2024). Her performance in the Disney+ film "A Normal Family" earned her best supporting actress at the 2025 Baeksang Arts Awards. The actor, 40, spent six years of her childhood in the United States and studied international relations at Ewha Womans University before pivoting to entertainment after winning a modeling competition in 2005. Park Chan-wook expelled from Writers Guild of America over 2023 strike violations
'Oldboy' director loses access to Hollywood studios, but Venice-bound 'No Other Choice' and future Korean productions unaffected The Writers Guild of America has expelled director Park Chan-wook and writer Don McKellar for continuing work on HBO's "The Sympathizer" during the 2023 writers' strike. The announcement, made public Friday, marks one of the most high-profile disciplinary actions stemming from the 148-day work stoppage. The expulsion carries significant professional consequences for the "Oldboy" director as it encompasses virtually all scripted content produced by Hollywood's major players. Park is now barred from providing writing services on any WGA-covered productions, effectively excluding him from projects at Disney, Warner Bros., Netflix, HBO and other major studios that maintain collective bargaining agreements with the guild. Both Park and McKellar served as co-writers on the seven-episode limited series, which starred Hoa Xuande and Robert Downey Jr. and aired from April to May 2024. Neither appealed their expulsion, according to WGA West leadership. The guild did not specify which exact violations occurred, but confirmed the pair worked on the series during the strike period from May 2 to Sept. 27, 2023. Park's Venice-bound "No Other Choice" won't feel the sting, however. The black comedy — which Park directed and co-wrote with McKellar, Lee Kyoung-mi and Lee Ja-hye — is produced by South Korea's CJ ENM and will hit North American theaters through Neon. CJ ENM operates outside WGA jurisdiction as a foreign production company, while Neon, like fellow indie distributors A24 and Lionsgate, isn't among the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers members targeted during the strike. The South Korean filmmaker can continue working internationally and with non-signatory companies. Several prominent directors, including Quentin Tarantino, have successfully maintained careers outside guild membership. Park's ability to work as a director remains unrestricted, as the WGA governs only writing services. Academy Award eligibility also remains intact, as WGA membership is not required for Oscar consideration. However, Park's path to major US television projects appears effectively doomed. His previous American television work included directing BBC America/AMC's "The Little Drummer Girl" in 2018. The 2023 strike focused on artificial-intelligence protections, streaming residuals and minimum staffing requirements. The guild secured significant gains in its agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers in October. The WGA constitution permits expelled members to apply for readmission only through board action, which may include fines and additional conditions, according to the guild's bylaws.
