'My Troublesome Star' reunites Uhm Jeong-hwa, Song Seung-heon after decade
A beloved rom-com duo is reuniting for a new series from the network behind global hit 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo.'
'My Troublesome Star' follows Cheong-ja (Uhm Jeong-hwa), a onetime A-list celebrity fighting to reclaim her former glory. Along the way, she receives unexpected help from a police officer named Go-chul (Song Seung-heon). The project has been generating buzz as the first on-screen reunion in a decade for Song and Uhm, who co-starred in 2015 hit fantasy romantic comedy film 'Wonderful Nightmare.'
Uhm spoke about the lengths she went to in order to capture the look of a washed-up star. During a press conference on Tuesday in Seoul, she said, 'I wanted to give the impression that she had been living hiding behind big, teased hair that covered much of her face, and that she had neglected her skin so that dark spots were left untreated. To look heavier, I wore layers of clothing and ate without restrictions during filming.'
She added, 'Usually, during filming, you check your appearance a lot to make sure nothing is off, but this time I checked my appearance to make sure I looked ruined."
Reflecting on their long-awaited reunion, Uhm shared, 'When we were taking a couple photo, Song said, 'It's been 10 years,'" adding, 'I was so happy to meet him again through this drama. It was truly fun, and the way I tried to completely ruin my appearance felt very lovely and enjoyable.'
Song echoed her sentiments. 'It feels like we filmed 'Wonderful Nightmare' just the other day, but 10 years have already passed. Back then, the film was two hours long, so there was only one story arc, but this time it's a 12-episode series with lots of incidents, accidents and twists. I really had as much fun as I could filming with Uhm.'
He added, 'I think the series is going to garner even more success than 'Extraordinary Attorney Woo.''
Uhm once again tackles a role centered on resilience and reinvention, following JTBC's 'Doctor Cha' in 2023, where she played a middle-aged woman rediscovering her dreams.
'I did think that the story of finding one's dream and taking on a challenge might feel similar to 'Doctor Cha,' but Cheong-ja's journey, starting from small, supporting acting roles, was very moving. Just as Jeong-suk (in 'Doctor Cha') showed that 'age or anything else doesn't matter,' I thought Cheong-ja could also tell a story of chasing one's dreams, but in a completely different way,' she explained.

Artcube 2R2 to spotlight legacy of five pioneering Korean female artists
Artcube 2R2 in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul, will open a special exhibition on Aug. 22 to shed light on five leading women artists in Korea — Chun Kyung-ja, Park Rae-hyun, Yun Suk-nam, Bang Hye-ja and Ryu Min-ja — and the distinctive visual language they brought to Korean modern and contemporary art. Coinciding with KIAF and Frieze Seoul, which runs Sept. 3-6, the exhibition will feature paintings, drawings, sculptures and media art across each of Artcube 2R2's floors, including the first floor, basement Media Cube and the sixth-floor Lounge Flux, according to the gallery. 'This is not just a retrospective. It is an occasion to reflect on how the luminous legacies of these women artists can be inherited and expanded for future generations,' said Hong Ji-sook, director of Artcube 2R2. The exhibition aims to introduce the historical and contemporary significance of Korean women artists from older generations, born between 1924 and 1942, to collectors and general audiences, and to further expand international interest in Korean women artists, Hong added. The gallery will remain open until late at night for the 'Cheongdam Night' on Sept. 3 for art lovers attending the KIAF and Frieze Seoul art fairs. The exhibition, running through September, marks the first anniversary of the gallery's relocation. The gallery is run by ArtToken, a Korean online platform for trading art and NFTs, non-fungible tokens.

JTBC's 'Beyond the Bar' promises to refresh crowded legal drama genre
Through the lens of the law, the series to offer viewers heartfelt look at human stories behind legal cases Amid a saturated market of legal dramas, "Beyond the Bar" aims to deliver healing stories that explore the emotional wounds behind legal cases. "Beyond the Bar" is an office drama centered on Hyo-min (Jung Chae-yeon), a rookie lawyer, and Seok-hoon (Lee Jin-wook), an elite attorney at the same firm. Despite the star power of Jung, known for "Family By Choice" and as a former member of the K-pop group I.O.I, and Lee, a seasoned actor with hit K-drama credits including "Sweet Home" and "Squid Game," the series risks encountering audience fatigue with lawyer-centered series. It is premiering in the wake of tvN's "Law and the City," which airs from July 5 through Aug. 10, and last year's successful courtroom drama "Good Partner." During a press conference in Seoul's Guro-gu on Thursday, director Kim Jae-hong addressed how "Beyond the Bar" distinguishes itself from typical legal fare. 'I haven't been directing for that long, but I've worked on two legal dramas. Still, when I first read the script for 'Beyond the Bar,' I thought, 'This is the real deal.' That's how detailed and realistic the litigation cases were,' he said. He elaborated that each of the 12 episodes features a distinct story revolving around the theme of love. "There are so many different forms of love in the world — and there are also those who have been hurt by it. I think what truly sets our series apart is the lawyers who, through these stories and lawsuits, try to heal people's wounds.' On casting Lee Jin-wook as Seok-hoon, Kim said, 'He's cool-headed when working, but when it comes to dealing with clients or his own people, a deep warmth comes through. I thought Lee Jin-wook embodied both the external and internal qualities that Seok-hoon needed.' Lee described Seok-hoon as 'a rational person who always has clear answers and makes quick decisions,' adding that he had to suppress his real-life personality — he likes to make people laugh — to portray Seok-hoon. "A lawyer isn't supposed to be funny. He's someone who handles cases logically and reasonably.' "Of course, I enjoy working on fantasy genres too and sometimes miss them, but I also believe it's important to bring realistic aspects like this into everyday life. This character is truly precious to me.' "Beyond the Bar" is set to premiere Saturday on JTBC, with streaming available on Netflix beginning Sunday.
