Independence Day: America's Team Cowboys must secede from predictable offensive tendencies

USA Todaya day ago
Predictability can be an NFL offense's worst enemy. In today's game, deception is almost as important as the talent on the field. If opposing teams what to expect before the snap, then they are smart enough to know how to beat it. While this applies to both sides of the ball, it is one of the many changes Cowboys fans hope to see implemented from new head coach Brian Schottenheimer in 2025.
When it comes to their offensive tendencies, Dallas needs to declare independence from transparency. It's one of few advantages of having a first-time head coach at the helm — no one knows exactly what to expect.
Even though Schottenheimer has been in Dallas for two years, he's been stuck in a supportive role behind Mike McCarthy. With McCarthy now out to pasture and Schottenheimer seizing the play caller role, it's anyone's guess what an unbridled Schottenheimer offense looks like. And that's a good thing.
Opponents likely expect a run-heavy offense with ample inside-zone running concepts and a play-action-rich passing game as a complementary force. But Schottenheimer, and his newly hired offensive coordinator Klayton Adams, are well-versed in a wide range of concepts that will no doubt be put to use in 2025.
The new head coach has discussed his desire to run multiple personnel groups in variety of ways this season. Using versatile players in different alignments and formations can stress a defense, prompting misjudgments and mismatches for his offense to take advantage of. Running passing plays and rushing plays out of identical looks is something Kyle Shanahan has made famous in his brand of offense, and it's something Schottenheimer appears to be aiming for in 2025.
To what degree everything is applied is anyone's guess. Schottenheimer has dropped nuggets of information but has been strategically vague as to the degree and breadth of these concepts on his ideal offense. It makes for an exciting and unpredictable attack in 2025 and, with any luck, will keep opponents guessing into the postseason.

New York Giants' Theo Johnson feels 'huge difference' entering Year 2

The New York Giants spent the offseason making some major changes to several position groups, but at tight end, the unit remains mostly the same. Though New York spent a seventh-round pick on Thomas Fidone II out of Nebraska during the 2025 NFL draft, the offense is going to be leaning heavily on the development of Theo Johnson as he heads into his second season in the league. During an appearance on the "Giants Huddle" podcast, Johnson explained why he feels more comfortable going into his second season after his rookie campaign was ended prematurely due to a foot injury. "I felt it coming on the more comfortable I got," Johnson said. "Just feeling what it's like to be in my groove, like now having an idea, like I've got this many games under my belt, this is what it's gotta look like. Just as it was like, man, I could really finish on a high note this year, the injury happened, which was super discouraging. But encouraging at the same time, because it was like, now I know I'm going to have a full offseason to kind of prepare and figure things out. I definitely felt like I was catching on at the right time. Unfortunately, the injury kind of put a hold on that." After being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL draft out of Penn State, there were high hopes that Johnson would be able to carve out a role in the Giants' offense. It seemed he was on his way to achieving that objective before his injury. He started 11 games during his rookie campaign, logging 29 receptions for 331 yards and one touchdown. Those aren't the most eye-opening numbers, but a deeper dive into his progression shows a player who was on the cusp of a breakout. Over the final four games before his foot injury, Johnson recorded 15 receptions for 181 yards and a touchdown. On a 17-game pace, that extrapolates to 64 receptions for 769 yards and four touchdowns. Now, going into Year 2, Johnson is ready to make good on those hopes of becoming a major asset in the passing game. "Huge, huge difference," Johnson said. "I know what it's like to be a professional football player now. I was learning as I went week by week [as a rookie]." The Giants will need Johnson to step into a bigger role with Russell Wilson set to begin the season under center, and it appears he's ready to take advantage of the opportunity.

3 Tennessee Titans named to unusual 'best of' list

The Tennessee Titans are already looking forward to the 2025 season. With a new general manager, a new franchise quarterback, and improvements made to the roster, the Titans expect to play better this season. Right now, though, it's dead time. And while we wait for training camp to start, signaling the beginning of the grind, CBS Sports compiled a list of players who 'own' their number. Meaning, they analyzed every player on every team and came up with a list from 0-99 of players who are the top dog wearing that number. The Titans had three players appear on the list: Advertisement No. 20 - Tony Pollard Seahawks safety Julian Love is an underrated steady presence wearing this one, and Breece Hall may offer more upside with the Jets, but Pollard is a more proven speedster when healthy. No. 37 - Amani Hooker The Titans haven't exactly been a recent beacon of hope, but Hooker quietly logged a career-high five interceptions to help lead an underrated defense in 2024. He could be due for a big deal. No. 38 - L'Jarius Sneed Speaking of big deals, Sneed got one upon his acquisition from the Chiefs in 2024, only to miss all but five games due to injury in his Titans debut. Still, he's been an All-Pro cover man when upright. Cam Ward was never going to get the No. 1 spot with Ja'Marr Chase wearing the number. That could change next year, but we haven't seen him on an NFL field yet. Seeing Pollard, Hooker, and Sneed on this list bodes well for the 2025 season. All three are integral parts of this team, and if Sneed can stay healthy this year, we might get to see what he is truly capable of. The true snub for the Titans, though, is that Jeffery Simmons wasn't listed at No. 98. Instead, that spot went to Las Vegas Raiders' Maxx Crosby. Simmons was mentioned, but Crosby's sack count over six years gave him the edge. Advertisement This article originally appeared on Titans Wire: 3 Titans named to unusual 'best of' list

Former NFL LB Bryan Braman 'in the fight of his life' as he battles rare form of cancer

Klutho /Sports Illustrated via Getty Images) Bryan Braman, a former linebacker for the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles, is currently battling a rare, aggressive form of cancer, his agent told KPRC 2 in Houston. 'At Stellato Sports, Bryan Braham has always stood for strength, resilience and leadership,' said Sean Stellato. 'He is a pillar and a staple of the underdog. Now, in the face of cancer, he embodies those qualities more than ever. If there is one person that I know that can beat cancer, it is Bryan Braman, who I have always considered family. He's in the fight of his life. Please support Bryan and keep him in your prayers.' Advertisement The 38-year-old Braman has undergone multiple surgeries and recently underwent a CAR T-cell reprogramming treatment program in Seattle, according to a GoFundMe set up to help the former NFLer. "With the cancer that Bryan has, which is a VERY rare form of cancer, the Car-t treatment had the highest chance of success as the cells are reprogrammed to fight this cancer that is within Bryan. His cells did re-infuse themselves, and did in fact start reproducing within his bone marrow. At first the mass did start to shrink, but then the cancer started fighting back. At this point Bryan has had to start having chemo treatments that are designed for the treatment program Bryan is in. "Bryan has had to undergo several surgical procedures. The main problem has been that Bryan has not been able to recover from the procedures because of his lowered immunity due to all of these treatments. By the time he was able to recover so he could continue with the chemo, the cancer has grown expedentially faster, and is is now growing around his vital organs. "The Dr's are now concerned because of his treatment, his chemo options are very limited. They have tried all of the various treatment options, and unfortunately, none of them are working against this cancer. But Bryan has not given up. He is looking into other trial treatment programs, and is determined to never give up." As of Saturday morning, nearly $55,000 has been raised for Braman, who was diagnosed in February. Braman grew up in Spokane, Washington and was undrafted out of West Texas A&M. He ended up making the Texans' roster on special teams in 2011 and made his name known with a helmet-less tackle. One year later he was an alternate for the Pro Bowl. Braman moved on to the Eagles in 2014 for three seasons. After an injury cut short his time with the New Orleans Saints in 2017, he returned to the Eagles that December and helped them win Super Bowl LII over the New England Patriots.
