On August 8, 19.5 lakh passengers availed the free service, while 31.7 lakh passengers travelled on August 9, suggesting a spike of 210 per cent than the normal. By 12.50 pm on August 10, 13 lakh passengers had already travelled, and by midnight, this number is estimated to reach 25 lakh.

At major bus stations like Ghaziabad, Moradabad, Meerut, Bareilly, Lucknow, Saharanpur, Agra, Aligarh, Kanpur, and Etawah, special duty staff were deployed due to the large number of passengers.
He also said that an incentive scheme for drivers and conductors has been implemented.
Meanwhile, lakhs of women in the state who benefited from this facility thanked Chief Minister Adityanath for this "gift".
Sandhya, traveling from Jhansi bus depot, said that the Yogi Adityanath government has taken a good step, making women feel positive.
At Moradabad bus depot, Jeetu said this initiative is benefiting millions of women and thanked the chief minister. PTI

The wait ends: Lucknow gets new Metro corridor, will ease traffic in Old City area
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday approved Rs 5,801 crore for a new 11-km corridor of Lucknow Metro, which has been pending for over six years. The East-West Corridor with 12 stations – 7 underground and 5 elevated – will connect Charbagh to Vasant Kunj and cover the most densely populated Old City area of the state Capital. This metro network will not only ease traffic congestion on the narrow roads of the Old City of Lucknow, but will also provide smooth connectivity to places like Chowk and Aminabad and historical tourist destinations such as Bada and Chhota Imambaras, Rumi Darwaza, Clock Tower, and Moosa Bagh. Thanking the Prime Minister for approving the project, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the decision will not only streamline the Capital's traffic system, but also open new avenues for employment, tourism, and investment. 'The project will elevate Lucknow to new heights by expanding its economic, social, and business infrastructure,' he added. The project will be implemented by the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), which is a joint venture of the Union government and the Uttar Pradesh government. The estimated time for completion of the new corridor is five years. Once operational, the new corridor, also called Phase-1B, will extend Lucknow's active Metro network to 34 km, linking key commercial hubs such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj, and Chowk. It will also improve access to major healthcare institutions like King George Medical University and old city areas known for their rich heritage and culinary culture. By easing congestion on the busiest routes of old Lucknow, the Metro will reduce travel time with improved connectivity to the Amausi airport, Charbagh railway station, and bus terminals. The 11.165-km corridor will comprise 4.286 km of elevated and 6.879 km of underground sections. It will integrate with the existing North-South Corridor (Phase 1-A) at Charbagh, which will function as an interchange station, facilitating seamless transfers for commuters between the two corridors. The stations on the new corridor are Charbagh (underground), Gautam Budh Road (underground), Aminabad (underground), Pandeyganj (underground), City Railway Station (underground), Medical Chauraha (underground), Chowk (underground), Thakurganj (elevated), Balaganj (elevated), Sarfarazganj (elevated), Moosabagh (elevated), and Vasant Kunj (elevated). 'This new corridor will strengthen access to Old Lucknow's rich cultural heritage, cuisine, tourism destinations, and employment hubs for those living in newer parts of the city,' said Sushil Kumar, the Managing Director of UPMRC Limited. A senior UPMRC official said the process of floating tenders will begin very soon. 'The UPMRC has already undertaken significant groundwork and compiled essential research data for the corridor,' the official said. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the East-West Corridor was approved by the Uttar Pradesh government in March 2024, while the clearance from the Network Planning was granted on July 9, 2024. It was recommended by the Public Investment Board in May 2025. As of now, the Phase 1-A or North-South Corridor of the Lucknow Metro is operational, connecting the CCS Airport to Munshi Pulia, a distance of 22.87km. The corridor started in 2019 and has a total of 21 stations.

High court directs govt to revive KMTA by Nov 1
Kochi: In an order that could improve the transport infrastructure of the city, Kerala High Court issued a directive asking state govt to revive Kochi Metropolitan Transport Authority (KMTA) by Nov 1. KMTA came into force in 2020 but is yet to be fully operational and there is a strong demand from various quarters to revive it. Considering a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Richard Rajesh Kumar and Arjun P Bhaskar, the court said that KMTA should be fully operational by Kerala Piravi Day and govt can provide adequate staff and funds for the proper functioning of the authority. KMTA, the first of its kind in India to integrate, plan and regulate different commuting modes in Kochi, was inaugurated on Nov 1, 2020. The authority is chaired by transport minister and has transport secretary as its vice-chairman. However, there was no major initiative from KMTA to strengthen the public transport system in the city, except for some initiatives like forming a society of autorickshaw unions and seven companies of bus operators in the city. As per section 12 of KMTA Act, 2019, the authority is conferred with a wide range of duties and functions to maintain the effective development of urban transport. The act envisages a comprehensive mobility plan and includes developments such as technology-based solutions for traffic management, detection of traffic offences, parking infrastructure and other such developments. Govt had mooted a plan to increase the urban mobility area under KMTA three years ago and a proposal regarding this was presented at its board meeting. As per this, nine municipalities and 29 panchayats should be brought under KMTA's purview to ensure its proper functioning. Commuters demand additional Memu service via Kottayam to T'puram
T'puram: Commuters who travel between Ernakulam and Thiruvananthapuram are demanding that the railways introduce a Memu service in the evening towards Thiruvananthapuram to ease passenger congestion. This will also help commuters who board and disembark at enroute stations like Kottayam. The evening Memu service to Kollam is packed because the frequency of trains in the evening to the state capital is low. Liyons J of Friends on Rails said, "Despite the benefits of a double track, passengers from Kottayam are struggling with just eight coaches in the evening. After the Kollam Memu at 5.40pm passes, regular commuters rely on the Venad Express, which arrives in Kottayam packed. After the afternoon Parasuram, the next service from Tripunithura, an IT hub, towards Thiruvananthapuram is the Venad, three hours later. This long gap causes uncontrolled congestion in the Memu from Kottayam. Additionally, with limited stops, passengers rely more on Kerala Express at 5pm and Venad Express at 5.20pm, leading to heavy congestion on these trains. The absence of trains towards Thiruvananthapuram after the Venad forces passengers from Tripunithura into precarious travel situations. After the Parasuram at 15.28pm from Kottayam, travellers to Changanassery, Thiruvalla, Mavelikkara, Karunagappally and all halt stations rely solely on the 5.40pm Kottayam - Kollam Memu. But it has fewer coaches and is crowded, he said. "A 16-car ICF passenger rake Kumbh is now available at Kollam Junction. Old ICF rakes from trains like the Velankanni Express, now upgraded to modern LHB coaches, are lying at various division stations. These can be used for running additional services," Liyons said. J Emma, a regular commuter, said more trains are required to meet the demands of commuter traffic. "The trains are also slow as they have to make way for express services," she said. The railways is tweaking operations to add more services and improve speed, but the line congestion is too high between Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam.
