Prayers Turned to Cries: Wall Collapse Claims Lives at Delhi Mosque

Time of India2 days ago
New Delhi: By Friday afternoon, the small mosque next to Humayan's Tomb in Nizamuddin had drawn its usual gathering of devotees, some seeking blessings, others seeking solace. Among them were a retired schoolteacher who had come to pray for her injured son, a young tailor hoping to meet the imam before an evening out with friends and a mother of four visiting with her husband.
None could have known that within minutes, a wall would collapse around them.
Nadeem was waiting outside the mosque for his childhood friend, 32-year-old Moinuddin, a tailor who had gone inside to see the imam. "We've been together since we were kids. He was a good man, the breadwinner for his family. I was looking forward to seeing a movie with him," said Nadeem, adding he would never forget the sight of his friend's body being pulled out from the rubble.
Moinuddin's wife, Afsana, 28, sobbed, "I was also going with him, but he asked me to stay with the kids because of the rains. I don't know what to do without him. My children keep asking for him." Afsana, their five-year-old son, a student in a govt school, and three-year-old daughter depended entirely on Moinuddin.

"This is the first time that she went there," said son Rishab Saini, 29. "She went to meet the imam and pray because I had suffered some injuries."
Rafat Parveen, 33, survived but was badly injured. Her husband, Mohammad Ashik, 39, recalled, "The moment I reached the door to step out to get waterthe wall collapsed and the cei-ling came down. I did not think of anything else, just kept digging through the rubble to save my wife.
I could only think of my four kids. I was lucky the children weren't with us."
According to local residents who were the first to respond, the debris was around 4feet high, wet and slushy because of the rain and very difficult to dig. Delhi Fire Service division officer Mukesh Verma said the rescue was particularly challenging due to the volume of debris and the location. "Before the fire tenders arrived, the locals had rescued five people.
The rest were pulled out by firefighters and other responders," Verma said.
"The operation was diffi-cult because the site is in a jungle-like area where a JCB could not come. We had to clear debris manually, taking care not to harm anyone trapped underneath."
Specialised firefighting equipment, including life detector machines, was deployed at several spots to scan for any signs of movement or heartbeat under the rubble. The search operation was still under way till late evening.

As the northeast monsoon is still two months away, meteorologists say the suburbs may get only isolated spells over the next two to three days before a dry spell returns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Undo Light and moderate rainfall is predicted across the state of Tamil Nadu until August 21. Experts said a low pressure near the south Odisha–north Andhra Pradesh coast is expected to move inland, bringing rain to central India. This may reduce rain intensity over southern states. Live Events "But some clouds on the periphery of the system may move over south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu, bringing brief showers to the city and neighbouring areas. This may last for two to three days," Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist, Skymet Weather told TOI. "After that, a dry spell may prevail and temperatures may marginally rise as back-to-back systems over northwest Bay of Bengal will draw away moisture." Since June 1, Chennai recorded 22 cm of rainfall, around 8% below normal. This includes 27 cm in Nungambakkam, around 3 cm excess, and 12 cm in Meenambakkam, around 15 cm deficit. Yamuna in spate: Water released from Hathnikund barrage, Delhi on flood alert

1 2 Yamunanagar: After nearly six weeks of calm, the Yamuna River surged into spate on Saturday following heavy rainfall in the hilly regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. In response, all 18 gates of the Hathnikund barrage in Yamunanagar district were opened for the first time this monsoon season, releasing a massive 1,78,896 cusecs of water downstream. The discharge is expected to reach Delhi within 30–48 hours, raising the river's water level and posing a flood risk to low-lying areas. Officials from the Haryana irrigation and water resources department (IWRD) sounded alert sirens before opening the gates and issued warnings to residents and farmers to stay away from riverbanks and move livestock to safer areas. The district administration and Delhi government have been informed of the situation. R S Mittal, superintendent engineer at Haryana IWRD, Yamunanagar, said the heavy rainfall in the hilly catchment areas led to a sharp rise in water levels, necessitating the release. "This is the first time this season that all 18 gates of the Hathnikund barrage have been opened. Supply to canals has been stopped to manage the increased flow," he said. According to official categorisation, a discharge of over one lakh cusecs is considered a low flood, 1.5 lakh cusecs a medium flood, and anything above 2.5 lakh cusecs a high flood. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo With the current release already exceeding the low flood mark, authorities are closely monitoring the situation. Water levels in the Yamuna rose steadily through Sunday morning. At 10 am, the flow was 74,304 cusecs, rising to 81,353 cusecs at 11 am, 91,985 cusecs at noon, and 1.16 lakh cusecs by 1 pm. By 3 pm, the discharge peaked at 1.78 lakh cusecs, according to IWRD officials. Meanwhile, several other rivers and streams in Haryana and Himachal Pradesh are also in spate. The Somb River, a Yamuna tributary with a capacity of 10,000 cusecs, is currently carrying over 23,000 cusecs, threatening villages in its catchment area. In Dhanaura village and nearby Haripur Khol, local streams have overflowed, raising fears of inundation. At Ranjitpur, the bridge connecting Haryana to Himachal Pradesh is under pressure as river water flows over it, causing concern among residents. With monsoon rains continuing in the hills, authorities remain on high alert. Residents in vulnerable areas along the Yamuna have been cautioned about possible flooding as Delhi braces for rising river levels over the next two days. Hurricane Erin's effect has started to seen as rain lashed Caribbean islands and weather officials warned of possible flash floods and landslides. Tropical storm warning was issued for the Turks and Caicos Islands and winds and heavy rains whipped the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. The first hurricane of what is expected to be a particularly intense Atlantic season, Erin briefly strengthened into a 'catastrophic' Category 5 storm before its windspeeds weakened to Category 3 Hurricane. Heavy rain is still expected across the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, with rainfall of 3 to 6 inches (about 7.6 to 15 cms), with 8 inches (20 cms) in some isolated areas. Swells were also expected to affect portions of the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, and the Turks and Caicos Islands during the next couple of days, the NHC reported. Live Events The government of the Bahamas also issued a tropical storm watch for the Southeast Bahamas. Hurricane Erin The Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June until late November, is expected to be more intense than normal, US meteorologists predict. Several powerful storms wreaked havoc in the region last year, including Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 200 people in the southeastern United States. Scientists have linked the rapid intensification of hurricanes in the Atlantic to climate change. Global warming is causing the atmosphere to hold more water vapor and is spiking ocean temperatures, and warmer waters give hurricanes fuel to unleash more rain and strengthen more quickly. FAQs Q1.
