Prediction: Rivian's New R2 Truck Will Be a "Tesla-Like" Turning Point for the Company

Key Points
Rivian is an EV maker trying to break into the big leagues of the auto industry.
The still-young company started out by focusing its efforts on high-end trucks.
Its next big move will be an introduction of the R2, a truck for the mass market.

Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) made a decision when it built its business to start with high-end vehicles. And then it charted a path toward more moderately priced vehicles. That business move worked and now the company is sustainably profitable despite years of red ink at the get-go.
Rivian Automotive (NASDAQ: RIVN) is currently in the red ink stage of its development, but it has Tesla-like ambitions and a key turning point could be fast approaching.
What did Tesla do?
The first Tesla was a fancy, high-end sports car. That vehicle proved to the world that electric vehicles (EVs) were a real product that customers would want to buy. For a long time the large automakers shunned EVs as not being viable. After Tesla proved the concept, it brought out sedans that would appeal to more than just car enthusiasts.
Those higher-end EVs sold well and, suddenly, every major automaker realized that they had to make EVs. If they didn't jump on the bandwagon they could get boxed out of a new segment auto market. As that was going on, Tesla pivoted again, bringing out lower-cost models of its EVs that had mass-market appeal. That helped to boost sales volumes in the capital-intensive business and improve profitability.

Essentially, Tesla started with rich customers. But there are only so many rich customers. And, thus, it moved down market to build a sustainably profitable business. That's a simplification of a very long process, of course, but it is the general theme that's important. Rivian is following the Tesla playbook.
Start high-end, then go mass-market
Rivian currently makes two kinds of trucks, a delivery vehicle and a high-end consumer pickup truck. The delivery vehicle was an important proof of concept that helped the company develop its technology. It also allowed Rivian to generate some early revenue thanks to a relationship with Amazon. Consider the delivery truck similar to Tesla's sports car.
As it was proving that its technology was reliable, Rivian was also building fancy high-end pickups for the consumer market. The trucks have been well-received, and Rivian has been able to ramp up production and fine tune its production processes along the way. In fact, it was able to turn a modest gross profit in the fourth quarter of 2024 and in the first quarter of 2025.
This means that Rivian stopped losing money on every truck it sold, though costs further down the earnings statement, like research and development (R&D) and selling, general, and administrative expenses (SG&A), still leave it bleeding red ink.
This is where scale becomes important. Rivian needs to spread its costs over more vehicle sales, which is basically what Tesla did. The next big vehicle release for Rivian is the R2, which is a lower-cost truck meant for the mass market. The goal is to start production in the first half of 2026. With around $7 billion of cash on the balance sheet and a key partnership with auto giant Volkswagen, it seems highly probable that Rivian gets that factory up and running.
The real test of Rivian's business will come when it starts selling the R2. If sales are robust the company will have successfully taken Tesla's playbook and achieved similar wins. And the added volume from R2 sales should help move Rivian toward sustainable profitability, just like Tesla achieved.
Rivian is high-risk, but executing well
Rivian remains a high-risk investment that's only appropriate for more aggressive investors. If the company doesn't execute well it could still fall short of its goals in what is a very complex and competitive auto sector. However, the launch of the R2 could be the big turning point for Rivian that turns it into the "next Tesla."
OK, no company is ever going to be Tesla, given that the company effectively created the EV space. But Rivian's R2 could make it the next best thing.

Tesla Cybertrucks Wanted By Air Force As Missile Targets

The U.S. Air Force is looking to buy two Tesla Cybertrucks for use as targets for precision munitions during testing and training. The service says it needs these vehicles for this purpose specifically because of the prospect of unspecified adversaries driving around in them in the future. The Cybertrucks are among 33 target vehicles the Air Force Test Center (AFTC) is looking to acquire and have delivered to the White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) in New Mexico, according to contracting documents recently posted online. WSMR is run by the U.S. Army, but the Air Force has a significant presence there. There are no name-brand requirements for the other sedans, bongo trucks, pickups, and SUVs, that are also on AFTC's shopping list. The primary intended use of all of the target vehicles is in support of U.S. Special Operations Command's (SOCOM) Stand Off Precision Guided Munitions (SOPGM) program and related training. SOPGM covers multiple special operations-specific air-launched precision-guided munitions, including multiple variants of the AGM-114 Hellfire, the AGM-176 Griffin missile, the GBU-69/B Small Glide Munition (SGM), and the GBU-39B/B Laser Small Diameter Bomb (LSDB). The explicit requirement for the Cybertrucks – which do not need to be in running condition, but do need to be able to roll towed behind another vehicle – requires a formal sole-source justification, a redacted copy of which is among the documents that AFTC has shared online. 'On 13 February 2025, market research was conducted to assess the competition for the Tesla Cybertruck by evaluating its design, materials, impact resistance, and innovative technologies. The study revealed that the Cybertruck's aggressively angular and futuristic design, paired with its unpainted stainless steel exoskeleton, sets it apart from competitors typically using painted steel or aluminum bodies,' the justification document explains. 'Additionally, its 48V electrical architecture provides superior power and efficiency, a feature that rivals are only beginning to develop. Extensive internet searches and industry outreach by [redacted] found no vehicles with features comparable to those of the Cybertruck.' More importantly, '[redacted] intends to uses [sic] specific Tesla manufactured vehicles for target vehicle training flight test events. In the operating theatre it is likely the type of vehicles used by the enemy may transition to Tesla Cyber trucks [sic] as they have been found not to receive the normal extent of damage expected upon major impact,' it adds. 'Testing needs to mirror real world situations. The intent of the training is to prep the units for operations by simulating scenarios as closely as possible to the real world situations.' The document does not elaborate on the 'operating theatre' or 'the enemy' in question, and TWZ has reached out to the Air Force for more information. Tesla effectively eliminated its public relations department years ago, but we have also reached out to its investor relations department for comment. As of this spring, an estimated 46,000 Cybertrucks have been sold to date, though the exact number is unclear. Currently, Tesla only offers Cybertrucks for sale in North America, though examples have been exported elsewhere in the world. Tesla did announce in April that it was planning to start direct sales in Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar before the end of the year. Without more context, it is hard to say what may have prompted the belief that U.S. adversaries might soon be driving Cybertrucks. It is worth noting that the primary targets for SOCOM's SOPGM arsenal, at least as they are publicly known, have been terrorists and militants, especially ones riding in cars and trucks, in the Middle East, South and Central Asia, and parts of Africa. The Cybertruck's windows and side panels have been shown to be bullet-resistant, stopping subsonic pistol caliber rounds, something that was heavily touted with the vehicle was first unveiled in 2019. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has described the vehicle, which has a retail price starting at around $80,000, as being 'apocalypse-proof' in the past. At the same time, the Cybertruck has been dogged by recalls, controversies, and criticism over its actual performance, features (or lack thereof), safety issues, build quality, ownership terms of service, and more. There have been reports this year of flagging sales. TWZ did previously lay out a detailed case for a militarized uncrewed version of the Cybertruck, which you can find here. Multiple companies are now offering Cybertrucks with add-on armor and other features aimed at prospective law enforcement, military, and private security customers. There have been some sales of Cybertrucks to law enforcement agencies, including the Dubai Police. The U.S. State Department made headlines earlier this year over a possible purchase of Cybertrucks, a plan it subsequently said had been shelved indefinitely. The Dubai Police General Command has added the Tesla Cybertruck, the modern electric car with a futuristic design, to its tourist police luxury patrol fleet. — Dubai Policeشرطة دبي (@DubaiPoliceHQ) June 16, 2024 Last year, Ramzan Kadyrov, the dictatorial head of Russia's semi-autonomous Chechen Republic, also showed off several Cybertrucks with 12.7mm machine guns mounted in the back and claimed to have sent some of them to join the fighting in Ukraine. How and where Kadyrov, who the U.S. government and others have sanctioned, acquired the vehicles is unclear. He later claimed that Tesla had remotely disabled at least one of them. Kadyrov of Chechnya published a video with Tesla Cybertruck with a machinegun installed — Liveuamap (@Liveuamap) August 17, 2024 After complaining Elon Musk remotely disabled his souped-up Cybertruck, Chechen strongman Ramzan Kadyrov claims he has sent two more that Tesla couldn't turn says he sent them to the "zone of the special operation" in Ukraine. This was presumably filmed elsewhere. — max seddon (@maxseddon) September 20, 2024 What we do know is that the Air Force is looking to buy a pair of Cybertrucks to fire missiles and bombs during testing and training events based on the possibility that American forces may encounter enemies driving them going forward. This Is Why Wall Street Is Worried about Rivian Stock (RIVN)

Rivian's stock has been under pressure since its second-quarter earnings report, which showed a larger-than-expected loss and a lowered EBITDA forecast for Fiscal Year 2025. Although analysts are generally positive about the EV company's long-term potential, many are worried that the end of federal EV tax credits could hurt demand for Rivian's upcoming R2 SUV, which may force the company to lower prices and make its already negative profit margins worse. Elevate Your Investing Strategy: Take advantage of TipRanks Premium at 50% off! Unlock powerful investing tools, advanced data, and expert analyst insights to help you invest with confidence. Indeed, UBS' Joseph Spak said that while Rivian is still aiming to break even on EBITDA by 2027, the loss of tax credits is a setback, and the market will likely wait for evidence that management can offset it. Separately, 4.5-star Cantor analyst Andres Sheppard kept a Neutral rating after pointing to weaker delivery expectations, economic uncertainty, tariffs, and Rivian's unclear position when it comes to self-driving and charging technology. Although he mentioned positives, such as the Amazon (AMZN) partnership and Volkswagen (VWAGY) joint venture, he also criticized the disappointing delivery guidance and much lower-than-expected gross margin. However, other analysts remain confident. In fact, Wedbush's 4.5-star-rated Dan Ives called Rivian a 'work in progress' after noting that the company kept its 2025 delivery forecast while adjusting its EBITDA target in order to deal with economic challenges. As a result, he kept an Outperform rating with a $16 price target. Needham's Chris Pierce also reiterated a Buy due to Rivian's strong cash position, vertically integrated structure, and expected improvements in cost efficiency when the R2 platform launches in early 2026. Is RIVN Stock a Buy or Sell? Turning to Wall Street, analysts have a Hold consensus rating on RIVN stock based on seven Buys, 15 Holds, and three Sells assigned in the past three months, as indicated by the graphic below. Furthermore, the average RIVN price target of $14.92 per share implies 28.2% upside potential.

Major EV warning as true battery range for big brands like Tesla and BYD exposed: 'Aussies deserve to know'

Australians considering buying an electric vehicle (EV) have been warned about the real-world battery range on some of the most popular models. Range anxiety has been a thorn in the side of the electric vehicle market for years as Aussie drivers fear they'll run out of juice on a long journey. Major strides have been made to push the maximum battery range for many EV manufacturers; however, these limits have been put to the test on our roads. The Australian Automobile Association grabbed popular models from Tesla, BYD, and Kia to see if they could go as far as they claimed. RELATED Electric vehicle warning as BYD records biggest month of sales in Australia Little-known Centrelink perk offers Australian students free flights ATO warning over $485 billion deadline for thousands just weeks away The AAA's investigation was part of a $14 million Real-World Testing Program to see how cars (including petrol and hybrid models) really performed in the wild. The Program recently discovered 25 out of 30 petrol and hybrid vehicles tested consumed more fuel than their lab results, and more than three-quarters failed to meet expectations. The next round of testing saw EVs taken on urban and rural roads, as well as on a motorway, and they had to contend with real-time traffic. They were also driven inside a lab to see how far the battery would last under perfect circumstances. Carmakers happily boast their vehicles can go certain distances on a single tank or full battery, with the latter used as a huge competitive edge in the EV world. Five electric cars were tested in AAA's program: BYD Atto 3 Tesla Model 3 Tesla Model Y Kia EV6 Smart #3How long did popular EV car batteries last? For the two Teslas, the Model 3 was able to go 513km in the lab, but only 441km on real roads, a 14 per cent difference. The Model Y had an 8 per cent difference, with the car driving 533km in the lab and only 490km outside. The BYD Atto 3 had the biggest inconsistency of 23 per cent, with the lab results showing a battery range of 480km, but a real-world result of just 369km. Kia's EV6 notched 528km in the lab and 484km on real roads, and the Smart #3 had the lowest variation of just 5 per cent, with 455km in the lab and 432km real-world battery range. "Australians deserve to know how vehicles perform on roads," the AAA said. "This testing provides accurate and relevant information to enable more informed decisions for consumers, businesses and fleets buying new light vehicles." Australian Electric Vehicle Association national president Chris Jones blamed the difference in battery range on multiple factors, including high or low temperatures, headwinds, steep terrain, and whether the driver uses air conditioning or heating features during their journey. He said EV makers needed to be more upfront about how far their cars could go so that buyers didn't shy away from them in the future. "It is frustrating that manufacturers are inflating the values when they really ought to be a bit more conservative," Jones said. "I would have thought a 10 per cent difference was reasonable but 20 per cent is pretty bad." Yahoo Finance has approached Tesla, Kia, and BYD for comment. EV subsidies could soon be axed under major overhaul The revelation could serve as a huge blow to the EV industry at a time when subsidies that won over many buyers are on the chopping block. The Productivity Commission is investigating the country's goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050 and highlighted the generous handouts given to those who buy an electric car. It has recommended to dump the Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions and state-based stamp duty discounts for the EV market. 'Now that the Australian Government has implemented the New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), it should phase-out the exemption of electric vehicles from the Fringe Benefits Tax,' the interim report said. The NVES was implemented earlier this year and it gives every car manufacturer a CO2 target that they either have to meet or beat each year. That target is lowered each year until 2029, which will put increased pressure on brands to have zero or low-emissions vehicles in their fleet. 'The EV purchase subsidies and the NVES overlap, as they both promote the purchase of low-emissions vehicles," the Productivity Commission said. 'EV tax discounts subsidise car buyers to opt for EVs, while the NVES is a broader-based policy that aims to increase purchases of low-emissions light vehicles, including both EVs and more fuel-efficient fossil fuel cars.' The suggestion sparked outcry from the EV industry, with Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) CEO Julie Delvecchio saying the incentives proposed to be axed were "finally helping everyday Australians afford an electric car". 'Suggesting we end incentives just as Australia finally catches up to the rest of the developed world with an efficiency standard is short-sighted. We need both - they work together, not in isolation," she while retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error while retrieving data
