How Zohran Mamdani used pop culture to make politics personal for South Asians in New York
When Zohran Mamdani launched his campaign for mayor of New York City, he didn't just knock on doors or shake hands at community centers — he spoke directly to the city's massive South Asian population through a language they understood deeply: Bollywood.

The 33-year-old democratic socialist, now poised to become the Democratic nominee after defeating political heavyweight Andrew Cuomo in a surprise primary upset, used film dialogues, iconic songs, and multilingual videos to connect with immigrant voters who rarely hear their cultures reflected in American politics.
And it worked — spectacularly.

Politics meets pop culture
Almost 3 weeks ago, Mamdani posted a video on his social media account where he could be heard appealing to the voters to vote for him in this election.
This was not your average promotional video, it was filled with Bollywood pop culture and desi moments.
While the video starts with a close up of Mamdani explaining how there is less than 20 days left to the elections- however soon he turns to bollywood reference to put his case forward.
The video bursts with iconic moments from classic and modern Bollywood films. There's Deewar, with Amitabh Bachchan's unforgettable 'Aaj mere paas buildingein hain…' line — followed by Mamdani responding, arms wide like Shah Rukh Khan, 'aap'.There's Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, and there's even Apna Time Aayega, cheekily flipped into "Aapka Time Aagaya."
But this isn't just nostalgia bait — it's smart politics. Mamdani used these references to explain real policy and voter strategy. He walked viewers through New York's ranked-choice voting system using none other than mango lassi as props — five cups, one for each ranking. It was quirky, charming, and instantly shareable. The language? A fluent blend of Hindi and Urdu.
Deep roots, real connections
Mamdani's outreach wasn't just performative — it was personal. Born in Uganda and raised in New York City from age seven, he's no stranger to blending cultures. His mother, filmmaker
, made some of the most loved South Asian diaspora films — Monsoon Wedding, Mississippi Masala, The Namesake — but Mamdani carved his own path.

Before politics, he released music under the name Mr. Cardamom (and previously Young Cardamom), including the single Nani in 2019 featuring cookbook legend Madhur Jaffrey as his grandmother. But by 2015, he was already on the ground organizing, starting out as a campaign volunteer, joining the Democratic Socialists of America in 2017, and working behind the scenes for years.
Bollywood as strategy, not sideshow
With over 600,000 South Asian Americans living in New York — the second-largest South Asian population in the U.S. — Mamdani's Bollywood strategy was more than clever. It was essential. In neighborhoods like Ozone Park, Richmond Hill, Kensington, and Curry Hill, where Hindi, Punjabi, Bangla, and Urdu are spoken at home, Mamdani's videos made voting feel less like a civic duty and more like a cultural moment.

‘Propaganda media': Tulsi Gabbard slams media over reports undermining Iran strike; CIA confirms severe damage
Top US intelligence officials on Wednesday issued a strong rebuttal to leaked media reports suggesting limited damage from recent US airstrikes on Iran's nuclear sites, asserting that the targeted facilities were in fact severely hit and would take years to rebuild. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Director of national intelligence accused what she described as the 'propaganda media' of selectively leaking classified assessments in a bid to discredit President Donald Trump's handling of the strikes. In a post from her official X account, Gabbard said new intelligence confirms the 'complete destruction' of Iran's nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan during American airstrikes earlier this week. 'If the Iranians chose to rebuild, they would have to rebuild all three facilities entirely,' she wrote, adding that such a reconstruction process 'would likely take years.' Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii who now serves in Trump's cabinet, also criticised the credibility of recent news reports that downplayed the extent of the damage. She claimed that these stories were based on illegally leaked classified assessments written with 'low confidence' and selectively leaked to mislead the public. Echoing her remarks, director John Ratcliffe also issued a statement on X confirming that the agency had 'credible intelligence', including from trusted sources, showing that the Iranian nuclear programme had sustained serious setbacks. 'Iran's nuclear facilities have been severely damaged by the recent, targeted strikes,' Ratcliffe said, noting that the CIA continues to monitor the situation and will update officials and the public as more information becomes available. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Both officials directly challenged initial leaks reported by some US media outlets that suggested the strikes had left core components of the Iranian nuclear facilities intact and had set it back only by a matter of months. Ratcliffe dismissed those reports as based on illegally obtained intelligence that does not reflect the CIA's current assessment. The statements from Gabbard and Ratcliffe mark the most assertive public response from the intelligence community since the strikes were carried out.

"Listening is most powerful parenting tool": Kajol gets candid before 'Maa' release
By Divya Malhotra New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): As she gears up for the release of her mythological horror debut 'Maa', actress Kajol opens up about a different kind of fear--one that every mother knows too well. In a conversation with ANI, she shared her perspective on motherhood, the delicate balance between protection and independence, and the deeply personal experiences that resonate with her latest role. When asked how she balances protecting her children and allowing them to face their own fears, Kajol reflected with the grounded wisdom of experience: 'My children are much older now. I have taught them a lot of skills. So now I will have to trust my upbringing. Look, I have taught you for so long, now it's time for you to learn your lesson and to practise it.' It's a philosophy of parenting that echoes the essence of 'Maa'--a film about a mother fighting ancient evils to protect her daughter. But in real life, Kajol believes parenting teenagers is as much about listening as it is about guiding. 'Sometimes just listening to them makes them also see your point of view and makes you also see their point of view. So, I guess listening is the most powerful parenting tool,' she said. Speaking about the most vulnerable period of motherhood, Kajol offered a moving reflection. 'The first day that the child is born in this world is the first day that the mother is born in the world as well.' Describing those initial few months as the toughest, Kajol revealed the immense pressure mothers face to prove their worth, both to themselves and to the world. 'There's a pressure on a mother that... no one can question me whether I am a good mother or not. You have to do superhuman things like not sleeping for six months and still have a happy face,' Kajol said. In a way, that relentless strength mirrors her upcoming role in 'Maa', where Kajol plays a mother confronting supernatural forces rooted in mythology, grief, and legacy. Directed by Vishal Furia and produced by Ajay Devgn and Jio Studios, 'Maa' is a unique entry in Indian cinema. The film marks Kajol's first foray into the horror genre and brings with it a compelling narrative: a mother-daughter road trip gone horribly wrong after they encounter a cursed tree haunted by ancient spirits. With a stellar cast featuring Ronit Roy, Indraneil Sengupta, Yaaneea Bharadwaj, and Surjyasikha Das, Maa blends mythology and horror to deliver a gripping emotional journey. The film is slated to release in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali on June 27, 2025. (ANI)
