
Astronomers left puzzled by high-altitude clouds forming on young planet
The thick slabs of cloud that blot the planet's skies are mostly made from mineral dust, but astronomers suspect there may be iron in them, too, which would rain down on the world below when the clouds break.
Astronomers spotted the high-altitude clouds when they trained the James Webb space telescope (JWST) on the young star system, which lies 307 light years away in the deep southern sky.
The star, YSES-1, is a newbie by cosmic standards, a mere 1m years old compared with the 4.6bn-year-old sun. The star is circled by two gas giants, both still forming and both larger than Jupiter, the biggest planet in the solar system.
Dr Kielan Hoch, an astrophysicist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, Maryland, said the planetary system's youth made it a prime target for astronomers to learn more about the early evolution of planets around faraway stars.
'There's a small handful of multiplanet systems that have been directly imaged,' Hoch said. 'And they are a unique laboratory to test planet formation theories as they formed in the same environment.'
'Both planets are still forming, which is why they are still bright enough for us to detect,' she added. 'The light we are seeing is from their formation as they begin to shrink and condense.'
When the team began their observations they were surprised to find both planets in the telescope's field of view, giving them information on two worlds for the price of one. The outer planet, YSES-1c, is the smaller of the two worlds, and about six times the mass of Jupiter.
The telescope revealed high-altitude clouds in the planet's atmosphere, but instead of being made from water vapour as on Earth, the clouds consist of magnesium silicate dust grains and perhaps some iron. 'The iron would indeed precipitate out,' Hoch said.
The astronomers described the observations as the first direct detection of such clouds on a planet circling a sun-like star. Further data revealed a disc of material made up of trillions of tonnes of dust particles around the larger inner world, YSES-1b, about 14 times the mass of Jupiter. The findings were published in Nature.
Hoch said the disc around the inner planet was a 'puzzle for formation theories' since both planets must have formed in the same environment. 'Why did YSES-1b hold on to material around it while YSES-1c did not?' she said. An added mystery is why a 16m-year-old planet still has a disk of material swirling around it. Astronomers' theories of planet formation suggest that any encircling dust should have settled after the first 5m years.
'We wouldn't expect the planets to look so different from one another if they formed in the same protoplanetary disk,' Hoch said. 'JWST is providing an immense amount of data to continue to refine models and improve our understanding.'
The $10bn telescope has transformed astronomy since it launched in December 2021 from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana. The flagship mission has peered back to the first galaxies that lit up the cosmos, spied strange new worlds, and witnessed black holes colliding. It has even spotted tantalising, if controversial, hints of life beyond Earth.

The Perseid meteor shower is widely regarded as the best of the year but better than that, it is happening this week. Active from mid-July until the end of August, the shower peaks on the night of 12 to 13 August, when it can be possible to see as many as 100 meteors an hour streaking across the sky in all directions from the radiant point. From more urban environments, expect an average of as many as one a minute. This will help see the fainter meteors and the more time you are outside, the greater your chances of seeing an exploding meteor, called a fireball. The shower is not as easily visible from the southern hemisphere where the radiant is lower in the sky.

The Perseids shower can bring up to 100 meteors per hour at its peak - including bright streaks and fireballs - creating a spectacular site for stargazers. Here is everything you need to know, from increasing your chances of seeing meteors to why it happens in the first place. Why does the Perseids meteor shower happen? The phenomenon has been recurring for centuries and is the result of Earth passing through a cloud of dust left behind the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The meteors, which are typically no bigger than a grain of sand, burn up as they hit the Earth's atmosphere at 36 miles per second, producing bright trails of light. Perseids - named after Perseus, the constellation that the meteors are believed to originate from - are also known for their fireballs. This is characterised by larger explosions of light and colour which stay in the sky for longer than the average meteor streak. It has been described by NASA as the "most popular meteor shower of the year". When is the best day to see it? The meteor shower has been active from 17 July and will go on until 24 August, according to the Royal Observatory. However, the number of meteors is expected to increase every night until it reaches its peak on 12 August. On this day, observers in the UK should be able to see some meteors as soon as the Sun sets, but the Royal Observatory says the best time to look up is between midnight on 11 August and 5.30am. A bonus for people trying to catch the meteor shower, Jupiter and Venus will also appear at their closest on the 11 and 12 August. NASA says on the morning of the 12th, the two planets will be roughly a degree apart and will shine brightest before sunrise. Why the moon matters The peak of this year's Perseids shower may be hindered by the moon being at 84% brightness. NASA says the glare of the moon is expected to wash out the brightest meteors, but all is not lost. Keen stargazers may still be able to see the action by standing behind a tall building or tree to block out some of the moonlight. Tips for stargazers Unsurprisingly, experts say observers should still try to avoid well-lit and built-up areas and try to find unobstructed views to make the most of the spectacle. Meteorite expert Dr Ashley King, from London's Natural History Museum, said standing on a hill in the middle of the countryside or going to the coast are typically ideal meteor viewing locations. He adds that the skies may look blank for the first 10 minutes while your eyes adjust to the dark, so warned stargazers to be patient. Using a red light torch can also help, as it will not strain your eyes while they get used to the dark.

‘My house and the earth shook visibly': blazing meteor thrills residents in Central Victoria
Residents in Central Victoria have reported seeing a large meteor streaking across the night sky on Sunday, with some people describing an extremely bright fireball and a loud sound as the object passed overhead. Dozens of clips and witness accounts were shared in the Facebook group Australian Meteor Reports. Saskia Reus-Smit, from Fryerstown, posted to the group that they had seen the meteor pass 'directly over my head, very low, seemed lower than a plane … close enough to see burning definition, like a volcanic rock burning orange, shades of black rock formation shadows clearly visible'. 'I knew what it was as I've been reading a lot on social media of a meteor shower happening soon, I just happened to be outside on a very clear night and was looking in the right direction.' Dale said he was left awestruck by the display. Astrophysicist and astronomer Prof Jonti Horner, from the University of Southern Queensland, confirmed it was a meteor that had lit up the sky.
