Scott Bessent Warns TSMC's $40 Billion Arizona Fab May Only Meet 7% Of US Chip Demand — Blames Building Inspectors, Red Tape For Delays

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent warned that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.'s (NYSE:TSM) massive Arizona fabrication facility may produce just 7% of America's semiconductor needs, highlighting regulatory obstacles hampering domestic chip production. What Happened: 'TSMC wants to build a gigantic fab system in Arizona, and I think it might be able to produce up to 7% of the chips that the United States needs,' Bessent said during recent remarks on All In Podcast. 'And they're dealing with local building inspectors.' Bessent criticized regulatory hurdles slowing construction of the $40 billion facility. 'Evidently, these chip design plants are moving so quickly, you're constantly calling an audible and you've got someone saying, 'Well, you said the pipe was going to be there, not there. We're shutting you down,'' he explained. Trending: Be part of the breakthrough that could replace plastic as we know it— Why It Matters: TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker and key supplier to NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) and Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL), is fast-tracking its Arizona expansion. The company plans to begin production at a second plant by 2027 and expects up to 30% of its advanced 2nm capacity to eventually come from Arizona facilities. CFO Wendell Huang told Bloomberg the company plans cautious spending in 2025 with up to $42 billion in capital expenditures while monitoring macro and foreign exchange risks. Bessent argued that environmental regulations have contributed to deindustrialization. 'We have made the decision to deindustrialize through our environmental regulations,' he stated, adding that making it 'easy to build things again' requires reducing regulatory barriers. TSMC maintains strong upward momentum across short-, medium-, and long-term trends, according to Benzinga's Edge Stock Rankings. While growth signals remain robust, the stock's value rating appears comparatively lower. More detailed performance metrics are available here. Read Next: $100k+ in investable assets? JD Vance Slams Microsoft For Firing Americans, Relying on H-1B Workers: Satya Nadella Says Layoffs Are 'Weighing Heavily' On Him

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Vice President, JD Vance has criticized Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT) and other tech giants for laying off American workers while heavily depending on immigrant labor through the H-1B visa program. What Happened: Speaking at a bipartisan event hosted by the Hill and Valley Forum on Wednesday, Vance questioned the ethical and economic justification of companies conducting mass layoffs while simultaneously increasing applications for employment-based visas. Check out the current price of MSFT stock here. 'You see some big tech companies where they'll lay off 9,000 workers, and then they'll apply for a bunch of overseas visas. And I sort of wonder; that doesn't totally make sense to me,' Vance said. Trending: 7,000+ investors have joined Timeplast's mission to eliminate microplastics— While he did not specifically name Microsoft at first, he later agreed when the host mentioned it and said that he read about their mass layoffs. He quoted the president, emphasizing the need for the best and brightest to make America their home and build great companies, but criticized companies that lay off thousands of American workers and then claim they can't find workers in America. 'That displacement and that math worries me a bit....I don't want companies to fire 9,000 American workers and then to go and say, 'We can't find workers here in America.' That's a bullshit story,' said Vance. Meanwhile, Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, addressed the recent job cuts in a memo to employees on Thursday. ' I want to speak to what's been weighing heavily on me, and what I know many of you are thinking about: the recent job eliminations. These decisions are among the most difficult we have to make.'Why It Matters: Microsoft's layoffs have been a point of contention. The company's second round of downsizing in 2025 affected less than 4% of its workforce, or 9,000 workers. The company attributed the layoffs to cost control measures affecting various teams, geographies, and tenures. Notably, the Nadella-led company has fired over 15,000 people until now in 2025, as per CNBC. Despite these layoffs, Microsoft has been actively expanding its artificial intelligence team, reportedly hiring around two dozen employees from Alphabet Inc.'s (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) DeepMind. This expansion has raised questions about the company's strategic decisions amid the layoffs. In the memo, Nadella reflected on Microsoft's decade-long mission to empower every individual and organization worldwide to achieve more, and discussed how the rise of AI is reshaping that vision On a year-to-date basis, Microsoft stock surged 22.5% while crossing the $500 mark on July Next: $100k+ in investable assets? Why Nano Nuclear Energy Stock Zoomed Almost 6% Higher Today

Key Points The company has been formally admitted to a key industry grouping in Canada. This positions the American company for future expansion in the neighboring country. 10 stocks we like better than Nano Nuclear Energy › Hardly for the first time in recent weeks and months, shares of next-generation power company Nano Nuclear Energy (NASDAQ: NNE) jumped skyward on Thursday. Investors pushed the shares almost 6% higher in value, on news that it is now part of an important industry association north of our border. That nearly 6% leap crushed the S&P 500 index, which was basically flat that trading session. Energized by Canadian news Before market open, Nano announced that it has become a member of the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA). That makes the U.S.-based company part of an influential industry grouping in the country, one that has been advocating for the use of nuclear power since 1960. In the press release trumpeting the news, Nano wrote that according to CNA data, nuclear energy effectively avoids 80 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions, serving as a clean alternative to traditional fossil fuel generation methods. Although Canadian citizens have been as critical and wary of nuclear energy as their American counterparts, Nano clearly sees a solid chance for winning business in our neighboring nation, and advancing the technology as it does so. It wrote, "With the introduction of next-generation technologies in the form of small or micro nuclear reactors, like those being developed by NANO Nuclear, there is a significant opportunity for Canada to solidify a leading position in the global nuclear industry." Walking the walk Nano did not provide any estimates for how an increased Canadian presence might affect its fundamentals. However, this feels like a low-impact way to strengthen its presence on the market. The proof will be in the doing, however, so investors should watch how -- and if -- the company's Canadian business develops following its CNA ascension.
