What is Mohammed Siraj's ‘Siuuu' Celebration And Why Is He Being Mocked For It?

News1826-07-2025
What Is 'Suiii"?
Suiii. The popular celebration is often seen on the football field where a player celebrates a goal by leaping into the air, performing a mid-air spin, and landing with arms outstretched, and shouting 'Suiii". The crowd joins the athlete and echoes 'Suiii" to celebrate the goal triumph in unison.
'Sui" in Portuguese means 'yes".
The celebration is largely associated with footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, who has popularised and made the Suiii celebration a part of his routine every time he scores a goal.
Ronaldo's widely recognised signature goal celebration has been imitated globally by several athletes in other sports such as cricket, tennis, and golf.
Siraj's Suiii
Siraj broke into the Suiii celebrations on Friday during the third day of the fourth Test when he cleaned up Chris Woakes on the first delivery of the 130th over of England's first innings.
What's the catch, then?
While Siraj's heart might be in the right place to celebrate the deserved wicket, the animated 'Suiii" performed by him after scalping Woakes may have made a few viewers chuckle a bit. Why? Because England were already leading India by a massive margin of 170 runs at the time of Siraj's wicket, and will look to extend the lead on Saturday. The host captain Ben Stokes is going strong at 77, while England still have three wickets in their kitty. At stumps, England were 544 for 7. India, asked to bat first, posted a score of 358 in their first innings.

'What Was That, Siraj?"
It didn't take much for those who tuned in to the match to come on X and ask Siraj why exactly was he celebrating a 'tailender" wicket.
'Pulling out the 'SIUUU' when you bowl the No.9 with a grubber and you're trailing by 170, hmmm," a user on X remarked.
'dunking the siiiuuu celebration after being 170 behind is soo embarrassing (sic)."
Siraj also faced criticism for throwing away India's reviews, yielding no wickets.
Woakes was the sole victim of Siraj on the day that belonged to England. The 31-year-old Indian pacer toiled hard for the wicket as he bowled 24 overs, giving away 113 runs at a 4.35 economy rate.

Kingdom Box Office: Vijay Deverakonda starrer collects 44cr worldwide in 2 days

Telugu film Kingdom held moderately well on its second day at the Indian box office, grossing Rs. 9.50 crore approx. The two-day running total of the Vijay Deverakonda starrer is Rs. 27.75 crore approx. The film has collected another Rs. 16 crore (USD 1.85 million) overseas, giving it a worldwide gross of Rs. 43.75 crore. The film is expected to see a surge in business today and again on Sunday. If the growth on the weekend is good, it could aim for Rs. 55 crore extended weekend in India and Rs. 75 crore worldwide. The Day Wise Box Office Collections of Kingdom in India are as follows: While the box office numbers so far are not bad, the high production costs demanded a far stronger opening and a steadier hold. The film now needs to get that big growth on the weekend and then sustain well from there on. This isn't typically associated with Telugu films, which are usually very front-loaded, but that is exactly what Kingdom requires. There are also dubbed versions, which can often lend a helping hand in case of higher investment, but they haven't done so. Tamil has managed some numbers, not enough to make a real impact, while Hindi is a washout. Overseas, the film did well on its North American premiere but hasn't sustained well with collections coming down on the following two days. The Territorial Breakdown for Kingdom is as follows:

Lakshya Sen, Tharun Mannepalli fall short At semi-final stage In Macau Open

India's campaign at the Macau Open Super 300 badminton tournament came to an end on Saturday after Lakshya Sen and Tharun Mannepalli suffered semifinal defeats in their respective men's singles matches. Lakshya, a 2021 world championship bronze medallist and reigning Commonwealth Games champion, couldn't match the pace and precision of Indonesia's Alwi Farhan, going down 16-21 9-21 in a 39-minute contest to continue his patchy run that has seen him struggle with form and fitness this season. In the other semifinal, India's Tharun Mannepalli went down fighting against Malaysia's Justin Hoh in a gripping three-game contest that lasted an hour and 21 minutes. The 23-year-old Mannepalli, ranked 47th in the world, squandered a strong start to lose 21-19 16-21 16-21 in a match marked by fluctuating momentum and a flurry of unforced errors. Lakshya vs Farhan It has been a tough season for world number 17 Lakshya, who has had seven first-round exits and two second-round ousters this season. The 23-year-old, who has been affected by shoulder, back and ankle issues this season, had entered the tournament to gain some confidence before heading to the World Championships in Paris. However, it was Farhan, the 2023 World Junior Champion and a member of Indonesia's bronze-medal-winning Sudirman Cup squad, who produced a dominating performance to knock him out of the tournament. World number 25 Farhan recovered from a 0-3 start to lead 11-7 at the first break in the opening game. He dictated the pace of rallies with precise drops and powerful smashes, catching the Indian off-guard on multiple occasions. Though Lakshya produced some eye-catching strokes, he lacked consistency, often erring in execution at crucial moments. A backhand winner brought him to 13-19, but a serve into the net handed Farhan five game points, and the Indonesian converted when Lakshya sent one long. The second game followed a similar pattern. With Farhan leading 5-4, a 38-shot rally ended with a sharp cross smash from the Indonesian, who then extended his lead to 11-5 at the interval. Lakshya looked tentative and was unable to counter Farhan's relentless pressure at the net and forecourt. Farhan raced to a 14-6 lead with another cross-court smash. Lakshya sent one wide and then found the net, allowing Farhan to grab 12 match points. The Indonesian missed one before sealing the match on the next opportunity. Mannepalli vs Justin Mannepalli started well, racing to an 11-6 lead in the opener. A pair of wide returns helped him build a 17-12 cushion before Justin clawed back to level at 18-all. After wasting one game point, Mannepalli closed it with a straight return. In the second game, Justin led 8-6 after capitalising on Mannepalli's errors. Though the Indian levelled at 13-13, a run of mistakes gave Justin a 17-14 lead and eventually the game. In the decider, Mannepalli again held a 6-3 lead before Justin turned the tables. The Indian reduced the deficit to 13-16 but faltered under pressure, and a clever drop from the Malaysian sealed the match.

After India snub in World Championship of Legends, Pakistan cricket board bars teams from using country's name in private leagues

After being snubbed twice by India's former cricketers in the World Championship of Legends (WCL), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has banned the use of the country's name in all privately-run cricket leagues, according to a Telecom Asia Sport report. The website, quoting sources, said the PCB took the decision during its Board of Directors meeting on Thursday in which senior officials 'expressed frustration after Indian players twice refused to take the field against Pakistan during the WCL's second edition.' Yuvraj Singh and Co. first pulled out of a league stage match against Pakistan Champions in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 25 Indian and one Nepali citizen. Both teams were awarded one point each and it was that point that helped India make the semi-finals of the six-team tournament after languishing at the bottom of the table for the whole tournament since they were winless until a victory over West Indies in the final league stage match. India Champions were once again pitted against Pakistan Champions — comprising Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and Misbah ul-Haq, among others — in the semifinals. However, after their withdrawal from the semifinals, Pakistan Champions made it to the title match. The report added that the team will be allowed to play the final against South Africa on Saturday but in the future, they will be barred from using the name 'Pakistan' without 'formal clearance. The report added that the Pakistan government and the Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Ministry, which oversees sports in the country, 'have advised the PCB to take stringent action to prevent such occurrences in the future.' 'The IPC is understood to have formally communicated its concerns to the cricket board, stressing the need to protect national dignity in international sporting events, especially those involving private or unsanctioned entities,' Telecom Asia Sport reported.
