Weathers delivers 5 strong innings, gets win in season debut as Marlins top Cubs
CHICAGO — Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers had a near-perfect first start of the season against the Chicago Cubs.
Weathers, reinstated from the injured list, tossed five innings, allowing two hits and one run on Seiya Suzuki's fourth inning solo shot to earn the win in Miami's 3-1 victory on Wednesday night.
Weathers, who suffered a left flexor muscle strain in March during spring training, struck out five, walked one and was sharp with his full repertoire before exiting after 76 pitches. He was backed by two homers by Kyle Stowers and one from Augustín Ramirez.
'It just felt good coming out tonight and throwing strikes," said Weathers, who threw 51 strikes. "My main goal was to be in the zone and just let my stuff do the work.
'Honestly, want to take back just one pitch against that lineup, I'll take that.'
The Cubs scored their lone run when Suzuki went deep to left-center off Weathers' high, full-count changeup.
After getting hurt, the 25-year-old Weathers had rehabbed in the minors, finishing with five scoreless innings for Triple-A Jacksonville on May 8.
Manager Clayton McCullough seemed delighted with what he saw from Weathers as the last-place Marlins ended a three-game slide and won for just the fourth time in 17 games. Weathers became the first left-hander to start this season for Miami and figures to give its rotation a boost.
'He was exceptional, to come in with the first one and get through five with the number of pitches he had available tonight,' McCullough said. "The velocity was terrific, you know some good changeups and the breaking ball.
'It was efficient, quality-plus stuff, you know, to go through a good lineup there.'
Weathers went 5-6 with a 3.63 ERA in 16 starts for Miami last season. He had been projected as the club's No. 2 starter this year behind 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara, who has returned to the mound after missing 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
In a corresponding move Miami optioned lefty Anthony Veneziano to Triple-A Jacksonville.
The Marlins bounced back a night after falling 5-4 when Jesús Tinoco blew a two-run lead in the ninth. On Wednesday, Tinoco came through with a 1-2-3 ninth for his fourth save to preserve Weathers' win.
Weathers is the son former major league pitcher David Weathers, who played 19 major league seasons with nine teams, including the Marlins and Cubs
Ryan Weathers was selected seventh overall by San Diego in the 2018 amateur draft and is 10-21 with a 5.08 ERA in four big league seasons with the Padres and Marlins.

Tyreek Hill trade still in play as Dolphins weigh cap relief amid offseason turmoil
Tyreek Hill's $29M gamble ( Image credit: Imagn Images) The Miami Dolphins are making headlines with a bold financial commitment to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, locking in $29 million as part of a lucrative contract restructure. This high-stakes decision underscores the franchise's belief in Hill's long-term value, even as the star receiver faces personal and professional challenges. Dolphins bet big on Tyreek Hill despite dip and drama Tyreek Hill, known for his electrifying speed and game-changing plays, saw a dip in his 2024 performance, posting career-low stats in receptions and yardage. Despite missing the playoffs, Miami is doubling down on their faith in the 'Cheetah,' guaranteeing him $65 million over the next three seasons and solidifying a $90 million package through 2026. This move gives Hill the most fully guaranteed money ever earned by an NFL wide receiver without extending the contract—a landmark financial commitment in the league. However, this decision comes on the heels of a turbulent offseason. Hill's personal life made tabloid waves after his wife, Keeta Vaccaro, filed for divorce following an alleged domestic incident. Although no legal charges emerged, the episode cast a shadow over Hill's public image. From a team-building perspective, the Dolphins' restructuring creates cap flexibility while also betting on Hill's leadership and bounce-back potential. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pare a neuropatia: descubra como NeuroFit Undo It's a message to the league, Miami isn't panicking they're investing in their core, even amid controversy. Trade buzz grows as Dolphins weigh financial fallout in Tyreek Hill saga Still, trade speculation lingers. According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the possibility of moving on from Hill isn't off the table. 'That could change in a couple of days. Given the realities of Hill's contract (re-done in 2024), it makes sense for the Dolphins to hold Hill until June 2 or later. That's when the cap consequences can be spread over two years.' 'For now, Hill has $28.296 million in unallocated bonus money that will hit the cap. A pre-June 1 trade means all of it lands in 2025. A post-June 1 trade limits the 2025 dead money to $12.728 million, with the remaining $15.568 million landing on the cap in 2026,' he wrote. Delhi: Talkatora indoor stadium set for ₹1.84 crore overhaul
The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is set to begin a comprehensive revamp of the Talkatora Indoor Stadium — the capital's oldest indoor sporting venue — including replacement of seating and upgradation of audio-visual systems under a ₹1.84 crore project, officials said. Constructed in 1974 and last refurbished ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the fully air-conditioned facility will undergo phased redevelopment over four months, NDMC officials confirmed on Monday. A senior NDMC official, requesting anonymity, said, 'The bids for executing improvements to the Talkatora Indoor Stadium were invited on May 30, and the process is expected to be completed by June 10.' The redevelopment includes replacing around 3,000 existing chair units, of which 2,700 will be installed in the seating area. According to NDMC's project report, the new arrangement will include 'floor-mounted tip-up seats' with shared armrests. 'The upgrade work will ensure that visitors get a comfortable experience while attending events. We have also mandated a five-year warranty to ensure upkeep of the sitting area,' the official added. The project will also involve demolishing the existing cement-concrete base and laying 2,000 sq. metres of new heavy-duty PVC flooring. The official noted that 'upgradation of the light and sound system is also on cards.' Located near the President's Estate, the stadium currently accommodates 2,700 spectators and is a popular venue for political and social gatherings, cultural events, conferences, and sports functions. Its name is derived from the adjacent Mughal-era Talkatora Garden, once home to a mediaeval reservoir that collected water from the South-Central Ridge streams. The stadium is offered for booking under three categories: Category A for tournaments and sports events; Category B for school events and annual functions; and Category C for commercial programmes like exhibitions, fashion shows, and religious or political functions, officials said. Separately, NDMC on Sunday announced plans to construct a 27-metre-tall clock tower near the Talkatora roundabout, at the intersection of Mandir Marg and Talkatora Road, under a ₹1.3 crore project. Officials said the clock tower will feature a two-metre diameter clock and will be built with an octagonal RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) design, finished with clay bricks and ornamental detailing. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025, officials added.

Messi's brilliance continues with 2 goals; Inter Miami beat Columbus 5-1
Inter Miami was in a midseason slump just a week ago. Lionel Messi made sure it didn't last long. Messi scored for the fifth time in three Major League Soccer matches to help Inter Miami rout the Columbus Crew 5-1 on Saturday night for its second straight win. Messi played a role each of Miami's goals. He scored twice in the 15th and 24th minutes giving him 10 goals this season, which leads his team and is tied for third in MLS. He set up Tadeo Allende's goal in the 13th, Faf Picault's in the 89th and was also involved in Luis Suarez's score in the 64th. That makes it two straight matches that the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has recorded at least two goals and an assist. His 16 goal contributions are the most in the league. I see him every game. We see the same thing," Miami coach Javier Mascherano said through an interpreter. "We try to help him as much as we can. ... Clearly he is the best player that has ever played this game. And we have to understand that when he is not brilliant, that's because one of us is failing. That's the reality. Miami was the more aggressive team early. The Herons had seven shots four on goal in the first 25 minutes against a Columbus team that does not give up many. The Crew entered Saturday ranked eighth in MLS with just 19 goals allowed. Allende opened the scoring with a cross-body finish set up by Messi's long ball over the top. A few minutes later, Messi took advantage of a poor decision by goalkeeper Nicholas Hagen and lofted the ball over despite the keeper getting a hand on it. On Messi's second goal, Sergio Busquets set up his former Barcelona teammate for the second straight game, sending a long pass to a streaking Messi for an easy finish over Hagen. It was an important win for Miami, which entered Saturday with just two wins in its past eight matches and was sixth in the Eastern Conference. Miami beat Montreal 4-2 on Wednesday, and Saturday's win over Columbus put last year's Supporters' Shield winner in a tie for third place with 29 points in their final match before the start of next month's Club World Cup. Winning this way gives us confidence, Mascherano said. It shows that we're brave and calm and can play against anybody, especially in the MLS. The tournament is another story. The rivals are are different level. Miami will face Al Ahly of Egypt on June 14 at Hard Rock Stadium, the home stadium of the NFL's Miami Dolphins. Before that, Messi will join the Argentina national team for World Cup qualifiers against Chile on June 5 and Colombia on June 10. Saturday was the second match of the season between Columbus and Miami, winners of the last two League's Cup tournaments. Inter Miami also beat Columbus to win the Supporters' Shield in 2024. They were the only remaining undefeated teams in MLS when they met in front of a record crowd of 60,614 fans to Huntington Bank Field on April 19. It was a single-game record for a Crew home match and the largest non-NFL event in stadium history. Miami won 1-0. Columbus made it 3-1 when Dylan Chambost's corner was headed home by Cesar Ruvalcaba against goalkeeper Rocco Ros Novo, who replaced Oscar Ustari in the second half. Mascherano said Ustari was experiencing discomfort in his leg and the team didn't want to risk an injury. Suarez restored Miami's three-goal lead with his second goal in as many matches. And Messi fed a through ball to Picault in the closing minutes, stamping one of Miami's most dominant wins of the MLS season. Miami played without veteran left back Jordi Alba, who suffered a lower-body injury against Montreal on Wednesday.
