Trans woman gets passport with TG cert as identity proof

Time of India6 days ago
Kolkata: A trans woman received her passport based on her transgender identity card (TG ID), probably the first such case in the country. The passport battle, however, was long drawn for Anuprabha Das Mazumder (32), who knocked on several doors before the Calcutta High Court ruled in her favour on June 18.
A gender rights activist, she is now looking forward to attending an international event on transgender issues in London next month.
"I am relieved and happy. Winning this passport battle is for the trans community at large. From now on, any community person applying for a passport can cite this example and the court ruling to make the process smoother," Das Mazumder told TOI.
She had applied for her passport for the first time in 2023.
During the interview, her TG ID card was rejected as an identity document. Not giving up, Das Mazumder approached passport officials, stressing that according to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, TG ID is a valid document. Receiving no positive response, she moved the high court through counsel Suman Ganguly. On July 18, Justice Amrita Sinha directed the passport office to consider the petitioner's application to recognise the TG card as a valid identity document while ordering Das Mazumder to apply afresh.

Accordingly, she reapplied on July 14, after which the process began. Even the Barrackpore Police Commissionerate played a proactive role by ensuring a smooth police verification, done on July 16. The passport arrived at Das Mazumder's Naihati address on Tuesday evening.
"Once the court intervened, the support came rolling in from all authorities, ensuring a smooth procedure. I hope this serves as a trendsetter where officials accept the TG card as a valid document," said Bappaditya Mukherjee of Prantakatha, who is also Das Mazumder's spouse.

Targeted attack on Jews? Blackstone executive Wesley LePatner's death in Midtown shooting raises questions

Wesley LePatner was the Blackstone executive killed in the Manhattan shooting. The Blackstone executive who was killed by 27-year-old crazed gunman Shane Tamura was a well-known Jewish figure in the community who even received an award in 2023 for her generosity to the community. The identification of the Wesley turned the random shooting into a targeted killing as many commentators said the earlier theories linking Tamura's manifesto, blaming the NFL, do not hold water after it's found that one of the victims was a Jew. Who was Wesley LePatner ? A senior managing director of financial giant Blackstone, Wesley LePatner joined Blackstone in 2014 and served as the global head of Core+ Real Estate and chief executive officer for Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust — a $53 billion property owner, according to Bloomberg. The Yale graduate previously worked at Goldman Sachs for more than a decade and serves on numerous Big Apple boards, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 'We are heartbroken to share that our colleague, Wesley LePartner, was among those who lost theor lives in the tragic incident at 345 Park Avenue,' Blackstone told The New York Post in a statement. 'Words cannot express the devastation we feel. Wesley was a beloved member of the Blackstone family and will be sorely missed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like What Will Happen to Your Body If You Start Eating 3 Eggs Every Day? 'This has nothing to do with NFL' Right-wing commentator and President Donald Trump's aide Laura Loomer trained the gun at New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani and said that the group that was behind the shooting was the same group that Mamdani was photographed with. "The Blackstone building is one of the locations that was listed as a 'Globalize the Intifada Zone of Operation' by the Palestinian jihadi group 'Within Our Lifetime' @WOLPalestine. This is the same group that @ZohranKMamdani has been photographed protesting with. Witnesses said they heard the shooter yell free Palestine. Blackstone has a Jewish CEO and the shooter shot and killed a Jewish executive. This has nothing to do with the NFL. This shooting was another targeted attack on Jews by a pro-jihadi domestic terrorist who aligned with the Palestinian movement," Loomer posted. Midtown shooting: NFL connetion of shooter Shane Tamura Mayor Eric Adams said shooter Shane Tamura probably targeted the NFL office, as a strange manifesto was found on him in which he blamed football for his brain disease CTE -- chronic traumatic encephalopathy. CTE is caused by repeated head trauma possible from playing football for a long time but Tamura never played football professionally.

Goa govt to introduce holograms to curb illegal liquor trade: Chief minister

I observe a Goan excise officer using a handheld scanner to verify the authenticity of liquor bottles with holographic seals in a bustling market. Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Tuesday said that a system of holograms will be introduced in Goa to help identify and stop illicit liquor trade in the state. His statement came after govt was heavily criticised in the assembly over an incident of a truck carrying liquor that overturned and caught fire on the highway at Dhargalim last month. Opposition MLAs asked whether 'duplicate alcohol' is being manufactured in Goa and how the truck entered the state by passing the border checkpost. Sawant admitted that no entry of vehicle was found at the checkpost. 'No duplicate alcohol is being manufactured in Goa. We will use hologram tech in the future, which allows us to scan and get all the information about the alcohol,' said Sawant. The opposition criticised govt's failure to identify the origin of the liquor consignment even though the incident occurred on June 17. 'The driver, cleaner, and others left the vehicle and ran away. Why are police and excise officials ignoring the incident? We know that illegal alcohol business is taking place in Goa,' said Benaulim MLA Venzy Veigas. The CM said that the PI and the excise inspector reached the spot once the fire was reported and seized whatever alcohol was still intact. 'Based on the collected labels, investigations are on. They transport this alcohol with no export licence, no permit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Spacious 3 & 4 BHK Homes Starting ₹1.65 Cr Near HITEC City Honer Signatis Book Now Undo Till now, we have not been able to verify where it was manufactured,' said Sawant. He added that the vehicle was from Nagaland. 'We have written to Nagaland govt, but we have not received a response yet. Our team has gone to Delhi and Haryana already in the case,' Sawant said. Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao said that although 1,395 cases of violations in liquor trade were found in Goa, state govt has initiated action against only two inspectors. 'Only show cause notices have been issued. You need to seriously look into the lapse,' said Alemao.

TN IT engineer murder: DMK allies seek law against honour killing

Tiruneveli/Chennai, Jul 29 (PTI) With the alleged honour killing of a Dalit IT engineer in Tamil Nadu sending across shock waves, allies of the ruling DMK on Tuesday demanded a separate legislation to handle such incidents. The victim, 27 year-old Kavin Selvaganesh was hacked to death by a youth, allegedly over an inter-caste relationship near a Siddha facility in the southern Tirunevlei district on Sunday. The victim was employed as an engineer with a software firm in Chennai. Thol Thirumavalavan, VCK chief, an ally of the ruling DMK, demanded legislation to prevent honour killings. 'It is said the woman's parents, who were involved in this gruesome honour killing, have not been arrested. They must be arrested and removed from (police) service," Thirumavalavan said in a statement here. He sought the transfer of the case to a special investigating team for fair probe. 'It is distressing that caste-based honour killings and casteist attacks continue to occur, particularly in the southern districts. We reiterate our demand for the creation of a dedicated intelligence unit in the police department to curb such caste-based atrocities," he said. 'The occurrence of such caste killings in many parts of Tamil Nadu, especially in the southern districts, is a cause for concern. The government contends that the existing criminal laws are sufficient, but the ongoing caste killings underscore the need for a new law," he said in a statement. He also sought appropriate compensation and government jobs for Kavin's family. The suspect, S Surjith, has been arrested on July 28 and remanded. According to a police officer, both Saravanan and Krishnakumari, the parents of the accused, are police sub-inspectors, and they have been placed under suspension following the incident. Senior police officials went to the house of Kavin Selvaganesh to console his parents and provide relief. However, his parents declined to accept the relief and demanded the immediate arrest of the SI couple as justice for their son's murder. A case has been registered against the SI couple and their son Surjith under various sections of BNS and SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, police said. Police investigation revealed that on July 27, the victim, Kavin had gone to KTC Nagar to consult the woman, a Siddha physician, about his grandfather's health condition. He was accosted by the woman's brother Surjith who invited him home for a discussion. Trusting him, Kavin went along with him. But enroute, Surjith abruptly stopped his two-wheeler, pulled out a sickle and indiscriminately attacked Kavin, police said. Though Kavin attempted to flee, Surjith overtook him and hacked him to death, police added. Meanwhile, On Tuesday, the relatives of Kavin staged a protest in neighbouring Tuticorin district, demanding justice for him. One of his relatives attempted to immolate himself, but the police present on the spot poured water on him and thwarted the attempt.
