Rs 1.5k-cr govt land cleared of scrap godowns & sheds in Gurgaon
Gurgaon: A govt land — valued at Rs 1,500 crore — in Sector 21 was cleared on Tuesday. The anti-encroachment drive saw demolition of 20 scrap godowns and 30 tin-set rooms and huts using bulldozers.

(now HSVP) in the late 1970s, this area was meant for developing a sector.
The team cleared about 15 acres of Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran (HSVP)-owned land till evening. An HSVP official said the enforcement will continue on Wednesday, with a total of around 22 acres set to be cleared in the coming days. The official said, "Any future attempts to encroach will lead to FIRs and strict legal action."
The drive saw heavy police deployment from Sector 22 police station. The enforcement was carried out in the presence of district nodal officer RS Batth along with a team of HSVP officials. Duty magistrate and SDE Surendra Babbar was also present. Soon after the operation began around noon, it faced resistance from locals and land claimants. Heated arguments broke out at the site, but Batth intervened, urging them to vacate peacefully.

Over the years, this vacant land had turned into an illegal waste dumping and processing spot. Residents said some of the landowners rented out their plots to small-scale waste management firms for around Rs 30,000-Rs 40,000 per month. Last year, a major fire broke out, which took the fire department six hours to douse the flames.
Batth said no structures can be built on land under litigation and asked the encroachers to remove their belongings before Wednesday's enforcement drive.
"We won't tolerate any encroachment on govt land. We will follow the law, offer time to vacate, but will not hesitate to take strict action if needed," Batth said.
According to an HSVP official, two days prior to the operation, public announcements were made in the area warning occupants to vacate the land. The drive was carried out as per orders from HSVP estate officer-I Rakesh Saini.
In 2013, Punjab and Haryana high court ruled that only vacant plots could be acquired by the state govt. Those on which construction was carried out could not be acquired unless the land was needed for setting up essential public utilities such as roads, water and electricity infrastructure, the HC said. Haryana govt subsequently appealed against this decision and the case is pending before Supreme Court.

The agency suspects these individuals have been aiding terror infrastructure by facilitating operatives, transporting sticky bombs and IEDs, managing funds, and handling arms, ammunition, and narcotics. Weakening wage and job growth cycle is impacting consumption sentiment , and tax cuts and rate cuts will help accelerate momentum, according to a report by ICICI Bank Global Markets. The report highlights that wage growth for listed Indian companies nearly halved in the financial year (FY) 2025, slowing to 7.5 per cent from an average of 15 per cent year-on-year (YoY) between FY22 and FY24, impacting consumption. The deceleration in wage growth can be attributed to the tepid demand and global economic uncertainty. The report adds that the slowdown, coupled with high inflation and elevated interest rates, has eroded consumers' discretionary income, particularly in urban areas. Spending across sectors has dampened. "Lower interest rates should lead to further recovery in consumption as repo-linked loans get repriced lower and reduce the interest outgo for consumers," according to ICICI Bank Global Markets report . "We believe further monetary support is required to spur consumption when inflation is easing," it said. Backing its assertion, the report added that Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) sales in urban centres are trailing rural markets. In contrast, passenger vehicle sales growth has sharply decelerated to 4.5 per cent in FY25 from 8.8 per cent the previous year. On the job growth front, the report added that once a strong hiring engine, the IT sector continues to grapple with demand challenges from tech disruptions, monetary tightening, and trade volatility. Net hiring peaked at 293,000 in FY22 and saw a net contraction of 70,000 by FY24. The Indian economy grew by 6.5 per cent in real terms in the recently concluded financial year 2024-25, according to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's official data. While the economic growth was 7.4 per cent in the January-March quarter (Q4) of FY25. This was a sharp rise from the 6.2 per cent recorded in the previous quarter. Given the underlying weakness in urban demand , the government announced an income tax relief of Rs 1 trillion in the Union Budget 2025-26. The other factors favouring a consumption recovery are lower food inflation as well as the recent uptick seen in GST collections. In the last two months we have seen a visible acceleration in GST collections, with gross GST revenues increasing by 16.4 per cent YoY in May and 12.6 per cent YoY in April, respectively.
