Libya's eastern-based government bars entry of EU migration commissioner, three ministers
TRIPOLI (Reuters) -The European Union migration commissioner and ministers from Italy, Malta and Greece were denied entry to the eastern part of divided Libya on Tuesday as they had disregarded "Libyan national sovereignty", the Benghazi-based government said.
The delegation had arrived to attend a meeting with the parallel government of Osama Hamad, allied to military commander Khalifa Haftar who controls the east and large areas of southern Libya, shortly after a meeting with the rival, internationally recognised government that controls the west of Libya.
The delegation included EU Internal Affairs and Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner, Greek Migration and Asylum minister Thanos Plevris, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi and Maltese Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.
The Benghazi-based government said the visit was cancelled upon the delegation's arrival at Benghazi airport whereupon the ministers were declared persona non grata and told to leave Libyan territory immediately.
Members of the European delegation did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
The Hamad government had said on Monday all foreign visitors and diplomatic missions should not come to Libya and move inside the country without its prior permission.
Earlier in the day the EU delegation had met in Tripoli with the U.N.-recognised government of Abdulhamid Dbiebah to discuss the migration crisis before flying to Benghazi.
Libya has become a transit route for migrants fleeing conflict and poverty to Europe across the Mediterranean since the fall in 2011 of dictator Muammar Gaddafi to a NATO-backed uprising. Factional conflict has split the country since 2014.
Dbeibah said during the meeting he had tasked his interior ministry with developing a national plan to tackle migration "based on practical cooperation with partners and reflecting a clear political will to build sustainable solutions".

New 11-party opposition alliance could shake up GE16
KUALA LUMPUR - The formation of a loose coalition involving 11 Opposition parties, announced by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has been described as a positive development in the country's political landscape ahead of the 16th General Election (GE16). Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim said the coalition was expected to create a more stable political balance when facing the 18 political parties aligned with the Madani government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. "The loose opposition coalition led by PN will go up against the strong Madani government bloc, which currently holds a two-thirds majority in Parliament. "The existence of these two major blocs will create a more peaceful atmosphere as the country heads towards GE16," he said. Hassan said the opposition coalition, made up of Malay-Muslim parties such as Bersatu, Pas, Pejuang and Putra; Chinese-based parties like Gerakan; as well as Indian-based parties including MIPP, PPP, Iman and Urimai, reflected the diversity of Malaysian society. The participation of progressive parties such as the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) and the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) made the coalition more inclusive, he added. "With a coalition of parties crossing racial and religious lines, they can no longer rely on narrow racial or religious rhetoric. Instead, all parties must seek a moderate middle ground in their political approach," he said. Hassan also acknowledged that the Madani government under Anwar has its own strengths, having successfully formed a multiracial and multi-religious administration since November 2022. He said the strength of the Madani government lies in its stability, experience and inclusive policies through the coalition of Pakatan Harapan with parties from Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. "Although the Madani government holds a large majority, the number of opposition MPs is not small and remains strong. This is what creates a healthier political balance," he added. Hassan said the future of the 11-party opposition coalition depended on how well it can build a national political narrative by focusing on key issues affecting the people. "If they focus on issues such as the economy, national finances, government governance, corruption in ministries, cost of living, taxes and subsidies, it will put pressure on the Madani government. "Moreover, if Umno Youth and DAP Youth continue to quarrel among themselves, it could damage the government's image," he said. However, he said he believed that the Madani government still held an advantage if it remained moderate, non-racial and focused on social justice for all Malaysians. He said this was clearly reflected, both explicitly and implicitly, in the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK13), which shifted from race-based economic policies to an approach that focused on the actual needs of the people. Muhyiddin said although a consensus had been reached, the official name of the coalition would only be announced at the next meeting.

White House launches TikTok account amid US legal uncertainty
WASHINGTON: The White House officially launched its TikTok account on Tuesday despite ongoing legal uncertainties surrounding the Chinese-owned platform's operations in the United States. President Donald Trump continues to permit TikTok to operate despite a federal law requiring its sale or ban on national security grounds. 'America we are BACK! What's up TikTok?' read the caption on the account's inaugural post, a 27-second video clip. The new White House account garnered approximately 4,500 followers within the first hour of its launch. Trump's personal TikTok account boasts 110.1 million followers, though his last post dates back to November 5, 2024, which was Election Day. TikTok remains owned by China-based internet company ByteDance despite legislative pressures. A federal mandate requiring TikTok's divestment or prohibition was scheduled to take effect on January 19, the day before Trump's inauguration. The Republican president, whose 2024 campaign heavily utilized social media, suspended the proposed ban. Trump extended the deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer by another 90 days in mid-June, with this extension set to expire in mid-September. While previously supporting restrictions, Trump reversed his position after believing TikTok helped secure young voter support during the November election. Musk's SpaceX, others win US court challenge to labor board's structure

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo (Reuters) -A U.S. appeals court on Tuesday agreed with Elon Musk's SpaceX and two other companies that the U.S. National Labor Relations Board's structure is likely unlawful and blocked the agency from pursuing cases against them. The ruling by the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is the first by an appeals court to find that a law shielding NLRB administrative judges and the board's five members from being removed at will by the president is likely illegal. The 5th Circuit on Tuesday said the protections from removal prevent the president from exercising his power to control the executive branch. "Because the executive power remains solely vested in the President, those who exercise it on his behalf must remain subject to his oversight," wrote Circuit Judge Don Willett, an appointee of Republican President Donald Trump. A series of similar cases challenging the board's structure are pending, and the Trump administration is making the same arguments after the president fired a Democratic member of the board in January and she sued to get her job back. The 5th Circuit upheld decisions by three judges in Texas that blocked NLRB cases alleging illegal labor practices by SpaceX, pipeline operator Energy Transfer, and Aunt Bertha, which operates a social services search engine, pending the outcome of their lawsuits. "The Employers have made their case and should not have to choose between compliance and constitutionality," wrote Willett. The board and the companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The agency's general counsel can issue complaints against employers or unions that are heard by administrative judges, whose decisions can be appealed to the board. The five-member board has been paralyzed and unable to issue decisions since Trump in January fired Member Gwynne Wilcox. The NLRB was designed by the U.S. Congress to be independent from the White House, and before Wilcox no board member had ever been removed by the president. Tuesday's panel included a second Trump appointee and a judge appointed by Republican President George H.W. Bush.
