Crude surge pressures India's FY25 CAD target, UBI says every $10 rise in oil may widen deficit by $15 billion, FY26 gap seen at 1.2% of GDP

Time of India5 hours ago

India's current account deficit (CAD) faces upward pressure in FY25 amid rising global crude prices, with every $10 per barrel increase in oil potentially worsening the annual CAD by $15 billion, according to a report by Union Bank of India (UBI).
The bank has retained its CAD forecast at 0.9% of GDP for FY25, but cautioned that commodity price trends, particularly in crude oil and metals, pose a marginal upside risk. CAD is projected to widen to 1.2% of GDP in FY26, the report said.
'We see a marginal upward risk to our estimate for the current account (C/A) deficit for FY25 GDP. We continue to maintain our view of widening in C/A deficit in FY26 to 1.2% in GDP vis-a-vis an estimated 0.9% in FY25,' UBI said, quoted ANI.
Over the past month, Brent crude has traded between $64 and $76 per barrel, and has risen 14% in the last 15 days amid intensifying geopolitical tensions. The report flagged this trend as a key factor that could significantly impact India's trade deficit and external sector health.
UBI noted that while global commodity prices remain a key risk, weak global demand and sluggish export growth may soften the blow to the overall trade balance.
However, it warned that any further escalation in Middle East tensions could strain India's import bill, given the CAD's high sensitivity to oil prices.
On the positive side, India's invisible surplus — led by services exports — remains robust. The country posted a services trade surplus of $188.75 billion in FY25, which helped offset a $122.45 billion oil trade deficit, the report noted.
UBI also pointed out that geopolitical developments, including tariff actions and any new trade agreements with the US or Europe, will influence India's external sector outlook in the coming quarters.

AI-Enabled Cameras To Spot Old Vehicles at Delhi Petrol Pumps From July 1

New Delhi: The Delhi government is all set for a crackdown on end-of-life vehicles starting July 1. Under the directions of the CAQM or (Central Air Quality Management), petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will be denied fuel at petrol pumps. Sources in the transport department said the Delhi government has already completed the installation of Automated Number Plate Recognition cameras (ANPR) at all 500 fuel stations of the city. These AI-enabled cameras will automatically scan number plates and identify vehicles that are under the "end-of-life" category. These cameras will also be able to detect if a vehicle has a valid Pollution Under Control or PUC certificate. Once detected, such vehicles will be denied fuel. To remind the vehicle owners about these restrictions and raise further awareness, the government has also planned to launch a dedicated jingle campaign starting June 20, which will play continuously at all petrol pumps till July 10. Meanwhile, training sessions are also in progress for on-ground staff at petrol pumps to help them understand the operation of ANPR systems and the enforcement protocol to ensure smooth coordination once the rule comes into force. The move is a part of the government's action plan to curb vehicular pollution in the city. Currently vehicular emissions contribute more than 50 per cent of Delhi's air pollution. The CAQM had earlier banned the entry of all transport and commercial goods vehicles not registered in Delhi into the city from November 1. Only vehicles with BS-VI engines, CNG, LNG, and EVs, as well as vehicles transporting essential commodities were exempt.

Himachal CM inaugurates newly constructed Rs 14.84 crore bus stand at Theog

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 18 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Wednesday inaugurated the newly constructed bus stand at Theog, built at a cost of Rs 14.84 crore, and the APMC Fruit and Vegetable Market Complex at Shilaru, constructed at a cost of Rs 23 crore, a release said. The facility is equipped with all basic amenities for passengers and HRTC staff. He also announced that a shopping complex will be constructed at the site of the old bus stand with government funding. The Chief Minister said that the newly inaugurated Fruit and Vegetable Market Complex at Shilaru would provide a reliable platform to local farmers and horticulturists to get fair prices for their produce, saving both time and money. He reiterated the government's commitment to providing modern and accessible marketing infrastructure for the farming community. To further benefit local fruit growers, he said that work on a Rs 26 crore winery at Parala Market would commence soon. He also assured that sufficient funds would be made available for the construction of the Mini Secretariat at Theog and announced the opening of a new HRTC sub-depot and workshop in the area. Referring to the natural calamity in 2023, the Chief Minister said that the government acted swiftly to restore road connectivity in the apple belt to ensure timely transportation of apples and avoid losses to farmers. He also highlighted the government's efforts to introduce the Universal Carton in the first year of his government to support horticulturists. CM Sukhu said the state has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to restrict apple imports in order to safeguard the interests of local farmers. 'We are raising the voice of the farming community at every forum,' he added. The Chief Minister also informed us that the Shipki-La Pass, which borders China, has recently opened for tourists. The government is exploring the possibility of initiating the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through this route. Criticizing the previous BJP government, he said, 'They constructed buildings worth Rs1,000 crore for electoral gains, many of which now lie unused. Our focus is on judicious use of resources to make Himachal self-reliant.' Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri lauded the leadership of Chief Minister Sukhu and local MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore, both of whom have previously served as presidents of the Pradesh Congress Committee. He said that Theog has consistently elected capable leaders and holds a place of importance in the state. He credited the Chief Minister for releasing Rs 5 crore to complete the bus stand project and informed that Rs 255 crore has already been spent on the Kurpan Water Supply Scheme, with the remaining Rs 45 crore now available for its completion. He assured that pending sewerage works in Theog would also be completed soon. Agriculture Minister Chander Kumar said that both the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister were fully committed to Theog's development. He recalled the significant contributions of former Minister Vidya Stokes and former Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh in shaping the region. MLA and AICC Secretary Kuldeep Singh Rathore welcomed the Chief Minister and expressed gratitude for releasing sufficient funds for the completion of the bus stand. He also paid tribute to Vidya Stokes and Virbhadra Singh for their visionary leadership. He remarked that development in Theog had slowed down during the past five years but had now regained momentum. He said once the Kurpan water supply scheme is completed, Theog would have sufficient drinking water. He also assured better road infrastructure in the region and reaffirmed the government's commitment to fulfilling its electoral promises. Highlighting the plight of apple growers, Rathore thanked the Chief Minister for implementing the Universal Carton system and urged him to strongly take up the issue of apple imports from the United States with the central government. 'I was the first to raise the demand for a ban on apple imports from Turkey, which supports Pakistan. Now, American apples pose a new challenge,' he said. (ANI)
