Free Gaelic language courses to be launched in Perth and Kinross
It is hoped to recruit Gaelic 'ambassadors' from the Perth and Kinross communities, who will help to share information about Gaelic events to people not on social media and potentially act as a Gaelic focal point in their communities.
A Perth and Kinross Council Staff Gaelic network has also been established, to encourage staff to engage with Gaelic and encourage use of Gaelic in the workplace.
Efforts to promote Gaelic include the Gaelic in Perthshire Facebook page, which was relaunched in February as part of World Gaelic Week.
This year also marked the 25th anniversary of Gaelic Medium Education at Goodlyburn Primary School in Perth, which was celebrated with a concert in February.
Learning and Families Convener Councillor John Rebbeck said: "Gaelic is an enormously important part of Scotland's culture.
"We want to see Gaelic thriving in Perth and Kinross and we have some fantastic initiatives underway to support those who speak the language and encourage more people to start learning it.
"Our new eight-week introduction to Gaelic will be an ideal way for those who've fancied learning Gaelic to get a grounding in the basics in a relaxed environment, while the guided self-study course will give them the option of taking their Gaelic to the next level.
"The Action Plan reaffirms our commitment to supporting the Gaelic language and culture, ensuring it continues to thrive across Perth and Kinross."
Perth and Kinross Council's' Gaelic Ambassador Councillor John Duff said: "It is fantastic to see such support for the Gaelic language and I encourage everyone with an interest in learning the language to sign up to one of the courses."

'Amazing' people help get poorly dog to vets during gridlock traffic
Evie Roberts was travelling on the A55 in Flintshire last Saturday afternoon to the vets for her four-year-old dachshund, Crumble, to get emergency spinal surgery. Evie's dog, Crumble (Image: UGC) She explained: "At about 4.30pm last Saturday I was travelling to Liverpool Small Animal Teaching Hospital with my very poorly dog for emergency surgery, and ended up diverted off the A55 at Caerwys and down a back lane towards the coast road, when the road became totally gridlocked. "Trying not to panic, we moved aside to wait for the traffic to clear and in passing, we mentioned where we were trying to get to, to another person stuck in the traffic. "Around 10 minutes later this amazing man came and said to us that everyone had moved aside for us to get through so we could get her the help she needed. He had been all the way down the queue and explained to everyone about our situation. "We did get there and she is now home and on the mend after emergency spinal surgery." Crumble is now back home resting after her surgery. (Image: UGC) Evie, who runs the Emporium second hand art and craft shop in Llandudno Junction, wanted to publicaly thank the man and all those who moved aside to let her pass. She said: "I just want to say a huge thank you to the people in that moment who did that for us, complete strangers, and to anyone on that road that moved and waited for us. "It was such a beautifully kind thing to do and I cried as I drove off whilst everyone waved us on our way. Amazing humans in a hot and busy situation. Thank you again." Evie had posted on an A55 group on Facebook to thank people, and has been blown away by the reaction. "It's had such a positive response it's had on Facebook, way more than I'd expected," she said. "I just wanted people to know that there is kindness in the world. And just not to stop believing in it. "It's so easy to see and hear the negatives all the time and think that that's all there is, but this proves different."

One of the injured firefighters had to be airlifted by helicopter to Coimbra, SIC Notícias reports. According to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC), 26 operators were mobilized to the accident scene, supported by nine vehicles and an aircraft. Teams from the Covilhã and Fundão Volunteer Firefighters, the National Republican Guard (GNR), and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) were also deployed. In a statement, ANEPC paid tribute: "It is never enough to emphasize the commitment, altruism and professionalism with which, every day, thousands of firefighters across the country dedicate themselves, with courage and dedication, to defending the population and the forest against fires." The force offered condolences to the families of the victims and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured. President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also expressed his sorrow, lamenting "the tragic death" of a firefighter "while serving the community" in the battle against rural fires. The head of state highlighted the sacrifice of firefighters nationwide, noting the crash came after "10 days of uninterrupted donation without limits of time and space" by those on the frontlines. Portugal is battling hundreds of raging wildfires that have swept across the country in recent weeks, part of a wave of deadly blazes scorching southern Europe. Terrifying footage even showed a rare fire tornado erupting in the northern region of Aguiar de Beira, underlining the extreme conditions firefighters are facing. Just weeks ago, a former mayor of Vila Franca do Deão lost his life fighting the flames — bringing the death toll from this year's fires in Portugal to three. More to follow...
