Free Gaelic language courses to be launched in Perth and Kinross

A Perth and Kinross Gaelic network is being established to link together people involved in, or with an interest in Gaelic. It is hoped to recruit Gaelic 'ambassadors' from the Perth and Kinross communities, who will help to share information about Gaelic events to people not on social media and potentially act as a Gaelic focal point in their communities. A Perth and Kinross Council Staff Gaelic network has also been established, to encourage staff to engage with Gaelic and encourage use of Gaelic in the workplace. Efforts to promote Gaelic include the Gaelic in Perthshire Facebook page, which was relaunched in February as part of World Gaelic Week. This year also marked the 25th anniversary of Gaelic Medium Education at Goodlyburn Primary School in Perth, which was celebrated with a concert in February. Learning and Families Convener Councillor John Rebbeck said: "Gaelic is an enormously important part of Scotland's culture. "We want to see Gaelic thriving in Perth and Kinross and we have some fantastic initiatives underway to support those who speak the language and encourage more people to start learning it. "Our new eight-week introduction to Gaelic will be an ideal way for those who've fancied learning Gaelic to get a grounding in the basics in a relaxed environment, while the guided self-study course will give them the option of taking their Gaelic to the next level. "The Action Plan reaffirms our commitment to supporting the Gaelic language and culture, ensuring it continues to thrive across Perth and Kinross." Perth and Kinross Council's' Gaelic Ambassador Councillor John Duff said: "It is fantastic to see such support for the Gaelic language and I encourage everyone with an interest in learning the language to sign up to one of the courses."

Perth street's luck turns as embankment revamp unveiled

An £800,000 Perth improvement project involving an unsafe embankment has been completed in 'the unluckiest street in Perth and Kinross'. Pullar Terrace residents had called for an improvement to the embankment in front of their homes more than three years ago. Its retaining walls had started to bend. The street was dubbed the 'unluckiest' in the area by Perth City North councillor John Rebbeck due to the embankment problem and other issues. But a commitment to a 'safer and more aesthetically-pleasing' embankment was made as councillors set PKC's capital budget in 2022. The £800,000 streetscape work has also involved drainage, the removal of overgrown shrubs and the replacement of outdoor stairs. PKC housing and social wellbeing convener, Councillor Tom McEwan, who visited the street to see the improvements, said: 'The completion of the project at Pullar Terrace underlines our commitment to enhancing the quality of life for our tenants and residents. 'We listened to their concerns and invested a significant amount of money to address them. 'The positive feedback we've received from tenants and residents about how the work has improved the street shows the importance of the community engagement we carried out through the process. 'The new drainage system, embankment and structural replacements have not only resolved immediate issues but also improved the overall look and functionality of the area. 'The project highlights how close partnership working between the council and residents can lead to meaningful and lasting improvements.' In 2022 then PKC Conservative leader Murray Lyle incorporated an SNP amendment for urgent work on the embankment to make it 'safer and more aesthetically-pleasing', which was voted through as part of PKC's capital budget. Addressing the council, Cllr Rebbeck had called Pullar Street the 'unluckiest street' in the area reeling off a whole list of issues. The Perth City North councillor had said at the time: 'Pullar Terrace is certainly the unluckiest street in Perth City North. He added: 'The worst issue is probably the embankment to the front which is certainly an eyesore and is becoming increasingly unsafe as well with rusty handrails; the concrete on the steps are getting a little bit dodgy, and the retaining wall's beginning to lean at not a very good angle.' The SNP elected member added: 'The residents deserve a little bit of support.'
