Professor Hird teaches mathematics at WVU Tech and serves as an advisor for several campus organizations including Golden Bear E-sports and Golden Bear Outdoor Expedition.
Professor Hird said if he's chosen as the 2024 Professor of the Year nothing much will change for him.
'I'm living the dream. So, for my career, I'm gonna keep teaching. This is just a sign that apparently, I'm doing the right thing and I'm doing it well. So, it would be nice to get that respect, but, yeah, it's just more signs that I need to keep doing what I'm doing,' said Hird.
Professor Hird credited his adaptive teaching style and work with on campus groups for the nomination.
He said he has been able to develop one-on-one relationships with the students and that it has allowed him to become a professor that students feel they can rely on.
Professor Hird said he appreciates the nomination and no matter what the results, he will continue to provide the best education he can to the students at WVU Tech.

'Small Town Universe' plays at WVU Tech on screening tour

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — An award-winning documentary set in West Virginia is currently making its way through the state on a screening tour. WVU Tech hosts regional math field day Small Town Universe is a documentary focusing on the town of Green Bank in Pocahontas County, and the observatory nestled in its farmland. Surrounded by mountains, Green Bank was the prime location for the now world-famous radio telescope as the peaks are great for keeping out radio waves that could interfere with the ones coming in from outer space. As the only town in America where cellphones and Wi-Fi are not allowed, the radio-telescope can do its work easily. Ellie White, a former Green Bank employee featured in the documentary, has a history with the observatory that goes back to her high school years. 'The [National Science Foundation] was going through a process of considering what level of funding the Green Bank Observatory was going to receive and so, these options ranged from full funding to demolition. So, my family and I got involved doing advocacy work to try and get people to write letters to the NSF in favor of full funding for the observatory,' said White. White was just a volunteer at the observatory at that time and after graduating with her bachelor's, she became a data analyst for them. During her volunteering, work on the documentary began. Katie Dellamaggiore was first intrigued by how Green Bank was devoid of the modern technology we use every day and wanted to explore that through film. She said her focus changed quickly though, once she arrived in town. 'But once I travelled to Green Bank and spent time there and really got to know the folks at the observatory, the scientists, the residents, the film really became a larger exploration of like, community and connection, and how science can really bond a community together,' said Dellamaggiore. Is solar energy an option for West Virginians amid rising utility costs? Dellamaggiore said she is thrilled at how the film has been received, especially during the screening tour at different universities. She hopes the documentary inspires the younger generation to consider careers in scientific fields and of course, the film industry. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. WVU Tech hosts regional math field day

BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) – School students of all different ages gathered at WVU Tech to compete in regional Math Field Day. These students represented schools from regions 1 and 4 in West Virginia. The competition encompassed many different areas of math, with one being physical estimation. A Hero McDowell County is lucky to have: Sharon Sagety is a #RemarkableWoman Jo Frost is the region 1 coordinator for Regional Math Field Day. She told 59News how these math field days help students prepare for their future careers. 'They get to come to the university campus. We start at WVU Tech, then [for states] they will be at West Virginia State University, and [for] national math field day [it will be] at Penn State, so they get to see where they are going, presumably with their education advancement. Penn State is not taking everybody from West Virginia, so it is a great opportunity to see that,' said Frost. West Virginia State University is the site of the next math field day for the winners from regionals. Last year, students from Raleigh County made it all the way to nationals, where they and Frost enjoyed an educational experience on the national education scene. Region 1 featured students from Raleigh, Mercer, McDowell, Monroe, Summers, and Wyoming counties. Region 4 included students from Fayette, Braxton, Greenbrier, Nicholas, Pocahontas, and Webster counties. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
