Dissapointment and grief as food rescue service set to close

There is disappointment and grief that a food rescue service and community hub in Wellington is set to close after 15 years. The Free Store redistributes surplus food from more than 60 eateries free to those in need, saying last year alone it rescued 42,000 kilograms of food. But for many, it's the sense of kinship and community the store has created that makes it really special, with one of its volunteers even offering to walk the length of the country to save it. Maisie Arnold-Barron reports. To embed this content on your own webpage, cut and paste the following: See terms of use.

'Waves swamped the whole entire boat' - witness to fatal capsizing

Surf lifesaver Paul Mandela witnessed the boat capsize on the Pātea bar and called emergency services. Photo: RNZ / Robin Martin A witness to Sunday's tragic capsizing in Taranaki - which claimed two lives - says the small pleasure boat was side-on to breakers at the Pātea bar before being swamped. Paul Mandela says the boat's skipper was thrown into the water, while it is believed his passengers were trapped in the vessel. A six-year-old child is thought to be among those who lost their lives. Mandela and colleagues were working on the restoration of the Pātea Surf Lifesaving Club. He saw the tragedy unfold. "A man was trying to make his way out past the breakers over here and at the last minute he turned and the waves swamped the whole entire boat, capsizing it. "He ended up in the water and supposedly two people were trapped inside the boat." Mandela raised the alarm. "I ran straight over to our surf lifesavers rescue phone over hear got in contact with the operator who sent in the fire brigade, Coastguard, police, ambulance and emergency rescue helicopters." He and his mates then tried to get to the stricken boat themselves. "We attempted to swim out to the boat with some life buoys over here, with no success. The current was too strong and a boat was coming in, so we called out to the boat for some assistance. "We managed to get the operator, the boat driver, out of the water and then we managed to secure the boat and tow it around to the boat ramp." Emergency services retrieve the swamped fishing boat from the Pātea River. Photo: RNZ / Robin Martin Jim was watching police and Fire and Emergency staff retrieve the vessel from the Pātea River boatramp. He said the town was reeling. "It's sad, it's one of those sad, bad things. You've got to respect this bar, mate. You've got to. If you don't this is what happens. Jim said conditions were not rough, but the waves were a bit odd. "They seemed to different, you know, they were coming up sharp and then they'd disappear and then they'd come up and disappear again. Unusual." Suzy was down at Mana Bay looking out across the bar. "It was just a sad tragedy. They've had a lot of accidents out here on the bar. It's just the way the current is and how the tide goes. "You've kinda got to know your way because there's a sand bar right along here and there's that one channel to get out." Kaynos was with Suzy yesterday as the drama unfolded. "We were parked on top of the sand dune and just seen a couple of rescue boats circling around this part all around the boat wharf part. "And then we seen the yellow helicopter and then the black helicopter and that's when we knew this can't be going nice." Suzy said it was a tough time for the community, coming almost a year after diver Daryl Gibbs was lost in the area. "Such as tragic loss. Locals, yes, locals that were lost. Devastating another loss for the community. It's such a tragedy." Sarah shared those sentiments as she looked out to sea. "This is like a second wave, so I think it's bringing back that raw emotion from the last time and it is just trying to bring that positivity back and keep that hope alive. "We're just wrapping around, wrapping so much love around everyone and hoping for the best." Police were yet to confirm the identities of those who lost their lives, a six-year-old child was believed to be one of them. They said they had retrieved the boat and it would be examined as part of the investigation into the tragedy, but as the investigation was in its early stages they were unable to provide further information. Police said information it has received suggested those onboard the vessel were wearing lifejackets. A week long rahui is in place on the immediate coastline.
