Healthy lifestyle more beneficial than anti-diabetes drug in long run, study finds
The US Diabetes Prevention Program, launched in 1996, enrolled 3,234 patients with prediabetes from 30 institutions across 22 states. The study aimed to compare the benefits of metformin and a lifestyle modification that included exercise and a healthy diet.
Researchers from The University of New Mexico, US, found that making lifestyle changes lowered the development of diabetes by 24 per cent, while the anti-diabetes drug lowered it by 17 per cent.
The findings are published in The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology journal. The team noted that differences between the two approaches -- taking metformin and adopting a healthy lifestyle -- were seen in the first few years since the study's start and were durable.
After the first three years, lifestyle interventions, such as weight loss and increased physical activity, led to a 58 per cent reduction in the onset of type 2 diabetes, compared to a 31 per cent reduction with metformin."The data suggests that those people who didn't get diabetes also didn't get diabetes after 22 years," author Vallabh Raj Shah, professor emeritus at The University of New Mexico's School of Medicine, said.Participants in the lifestyle modification group experienced an additional 3.5 years without diabetes, while those in the metformin group gained an extra 2.5 years."Within three years (since the study started), they had to stop the study because lifestyle was better than metformin. That means lifestyle, which everybody is banking on, is more effective -- that is the news," Shah added.
The authors wrote, "During follow-up, compared with placebo, diabetes incidence rate was reduced in the (intensive lifestyle intervention) group (by 24 per cent), and in the original metformin group (by 17 per cent), with corresponding increases in median diabetes-free survival of 3.5 years and 2.5 years."

According to district administrative sources, Ratgaon, the largest village in the Sol region with a population of 4,000, remains isolated for the 12th consecutive day. Residents are confined to their homes, and although ration supplies are currently adequate, health concerns are escalating. The village has over 20 elderly residents with health issues and 9 pregnant women, adding to the urgency of the situation. "Elderly and sick people cannot reach the hospital," Manveer Singh, a villager, lamented. "Pregnant women are facing various problems, including health check-ups," he added.

Govt has adopted holistic approach to improve health of citizens: Shah
Pune: The Narendra Modi-led government has adopted a "well thought out holistic approach" to improve the health of the citizens of the country, Union minister Amit Shah said in Pune on Friday. Special attention has been given to every programme touching health, especially medical education and research, Shah said after performing the ground breaking ceremony of Poona Hospital and Research Centre (PHRC) Health City project. In the past 11 years, the Modi government has made all the arrangements to improve the health of the citizens of the country, he said. "In the previous government, the health budget was Rs 37,000 crore and in 2025-26, Modi ji increased it to Rs 1.37 lakh crore," he said. Shah also inaugurated the Jairaj Sports and Convention Centre built by the Shri Poona Gujarati Bandhu Samaj in Pune. The country is rapidly progressing on the path of development and a foundation is being laid for building a developed India in 2047, he said. "Pune has led the entire country in knowledge, nationalism, social consciousness and freedom struggle," he said. Wherever Gujaratis have gone in the world, they have made Gujarat proud and Gujarati society has never been involved in any kind of controversy, he said. The habit of reading and learning about history must be inculcated in children, Shah said. He reiterated that the four-decade-old Naxal menace will be eradicated from the country by March 31 next year. PTI
