West Bengal tourism dept to celebrate Jamai Shashti with ‘Jamai Aador' food festival
In an effort to promote cultural tourism and celebrate Bengal's treasured familial traditions, the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation Limited (WBTDCL) will host 'Jamai Aador', a special initiative launched by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in celebration of Jamai Shashti.
The event is scheduled for May 31 and June 1, 2025, and will take place across four key tourist lodges managed by the state tourism department: Udayachal (Bidhannagar), Dighali 1 (Digha), Shantobitan (Bolpur), and Mainak (Siliguri). The celebration aims to spotlight the traditional Bengali custom of honoring the jamai (son-in-law).
A major highlight of the two-day festival will be an expansive Bengali culinary experience. Meals will be served during lunch (12:01 pm to 3:00 pm) and dinner (7:00 pm to 10:00 pm), featuring a specially curated menu of traditional Bengali delicacies. The meal begins with a refreshing welcome drink of lime soda, followed by a selection of dishes including phulko luchi, alur dom, sugondhi chaaler bhaat, lau diye orhor daal, and jhuro aloo bhaja.
Guests can also enjoy a variety of elaborate offerings such as chhanar pur bhora potoler dorma, begun sundori, kaju kishmish pulao, golda chingrir malaikari, bhetki paturi, and pathar kosha mangsho. The feast concludes with quintessential Bengali desserts like kachaa aam er chatni, machher/chingrir papad, paka aam, talshaansh sandesh, pantua, mishti doi, and mishti paan. This full-course meal is priced at Rs 1,099 (inclusive of all taxes) at all four venues.
Additionally, Udayachal in Bidhannagar will offer two Bengali-Mughlai fusion cuisine packages.
The Rs 649 menu includes bhetki fish fry with mustard, special chicken dum biryani, chicken chaap, and shahi phirni, while the Rs 749 package offers a variation featuring mutton dum biryani in place of chicken.
'Jamai Aador is an initiative to honour the traditional celebration of Jamai Shasthi, a cherished cultural occasion in Bengal that symbolises affection and hospitality towards sons-in-law. This year, we are highlighting the essence of Bengali culinary heritage with an elaborate spread of authentic regional delicacies. In addition to the traditional Bengali fare, we have also introduced Mughlai dishes, blending the richness of two culinary traditions that have long coexisted in Bengal's food culture,' an official of the WBTDCL said.

I-Day weekend flight fares to Goa touch 23k, Kochi 25k
Mumbai: The mid-Aug holidays—Independence Day, Janmasthami and Parsi New Year—have been spiking the demand for air travel for quite some years now, and the trend has stayed strong this time too. With Aug 15 falling on a Friday, the extended weekend holidayers seem to have booked their short trips as airfares to leisure and religious destinations have peaked for the coming weekend. The most noticeable change is on the Mumbai-Goa route. Airfares on the most popular non-metro destination out of Mumbai had cooled in the recent past with two airports in Goa offering travel options. But this year, if you want to fly out on Friday morning or noon to Goa and return by a noon or evening flight, you will have to shell out Rs 23,000. The cheapest fare on the route is Rs 15,000, but that would give you red-eye flights that depart or land around midnight. Last year, the cheapest 24-hour advance purchase fare to travel from Mumbai to Goa started at Rs 15,000, for convenient timings. In 2024, Aug 15 fell on a Thursday, but with Rakshabandan falling on Aug 19, in 2024, the mid-Aug long weekend stretched to five days. This year, the Aug 15 long weekend is only 3 days long. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? Rajesh Magow of MakeMyTrip said: "Independence Day has emerged as a key travel occasion over the years. This year too, the search and booking trends point to strong intent to travel over the Independence Day weekend. With Independence Day on a Friday, travel demand appears to be peaking two days earlier, on Wednesday, Aug 13, giving early travellers a 5-day window." Among the trending domestic cities are Goa, Udaipur, Jaipur, Puri, Lonavala, Varanasi, Coorg, Mahabaleshwar, Ooty, and Puducherry, he added. The first half of Aug is shaping up to be a peak travel window, with travellers opting for quick escapes. Complete Mum-Goa H'way before Ganeshotsav: Dy CM
Pune: All pending works on the Mumbai-Goa Highway must be completed on a war footing before Ganeshotsav to ensure seamless journey of devotees heading to Konkan, deputy chief minister said during a meeting on Wednesday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Chairing a review meeting, which included officials from Konkan region and highway authorities, at Mantralaya, Pawar announced a Rs 21-crore provision for immediate road works near Indapur-Mangaon on the highway. He also told officials to form a state-level committee under public works minister Shivendraraje Bhosale to fast-track four-laning, repair works, bridge construction and installation of road safety measures. "During Ganeshotsav, thousands of people travel to their villages via this route. All agencies must coordinate for smooth management. Construction activities that were causing traffic congestion must be either expedited to complete before the festival or briefly halted during it. The district administrations of Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg should strictly plan traffic flow, inspect congestion-prone spots and ensure medical facilities and emergency systems must be made available along the highway, especially on ghat roads and sharp turns," Pawar said. PWD minister Bhosale, who had inspected the road ahead of the meeting, told TOI that the meeting has given directions and the committee will be formed and works carried out accordingly. The deputy CM said immediate action on pothole complaints must be taken and two special officers will be appointed to promptly fill dangerous potholes, with their contact numbers shared publicly to report issues. The plan includes installing directional signage, constructing bridges, setting up trauma care centres and building toilets at 40-km intervals along the route. Activist representatives, including Janakrosh Samiti chairperson Ajay Yadavrao, Baliraja Sena president Ashok Valam and Prakash Bhangrath, attended the meet via video conferencing.
