From Covid-19 frontlines to inflight heroism: Kolkata's Doli Biswas wins National Florence Nightingale Award

Written By Adrija Datta Doli Biswas, Chief Nursing Officer at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur, Kolkata, has been honoured with the prestigious National Florence Nightingale Award 2025 for her service and dedication to the field of nursing. The award was presented by President Droupadi Murmu at a formal ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Friday. Biswas is among the 15 distinguished nurses from across the country who received the award this year. The award recognises meritorious services rendered by nurses in India. It is the highest national recognition for nursing professionals in the country, instituted by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. 'I was also felicitated by The Trained Nurses' Association of India and the Indian Nursing Council yesterday (Friday) after the completion of the ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan,' said Biswas. With over 27 years of experience in nursing, Biswas is recognised for her clinical expertise, leadership in nursing practice, and compassionate patient care. She completed her specialisation in cardiovascular and thoracic nursing from the BM Birla Heart Research Centre under the West Bengal Nursing Council in 1997. She later pursued a Master's degree in Nursing from the West Bengal University of Health Sciences and earned an MPhil in Nursing from Manipal University. Currently, she is pursuing her PhD in Medical-Surgical Nursing from Mansarovar Global University, Bhopal. Biswas played a crucial role during the Covid-19 pandemic and was awarded the Covid Warrior Award in 2022. 'I looked after the bed management, nursing management, and nursing care of corona patients during the Covid-19 wave and arranged green corridors for patients,' said Biswas. It has been learnt that she was instrumental in the development and standardisation of various nursing procedures at Fortis Hospital for 14 years, significantly contributing to quality care initiatives. In 2024, Biswas was widely appreciated for saving the life of a passenger who suffered a heart attack aboard an Indigo flight from Delhi to Kolkata. The incident occurred on the runway at Delhi's Terminal 3, IGI Airport, just before take-off. Responding swiftly to an onboard medical emergency announcement, Biswas, along with two doctors, provided timely assistance that helped stabilise the passenger. 'When the in-flight medical emergency was announced, I didn't think twice before stepping forward. The passenger showed signs of hypoglycemia and later suffered a heart attack. I immediately administered sugar water, monitored his blood pressure, and identified the cardiac event. With the help of co-passengers, I administered emergency medication, stabilised him, and advised the crew to arrange urgent medical evacuation, and he was safely shifted to a hospital,' said Biswas. 'I addressed a similar medical emergency while on a trip to Kedarnath,' added Biswas. (Adrija Datta is an intern with The Indian Express)

Heavy rain expected in West Bengal on May 28 and 29, IMD issues yellow alert

Written by Adrija Datta Fairly widespread rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph, is expected across West Bengal on Thursday and Friday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Kolkata has issued a yellow alert for the districts of Kolkata, Hooghly, Howrah, Purba Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, and Nadia. This alert is linked to a low-pressure area currently situated over the northwest Bay of Bengal, off the Odisha coast. According to the IMD, the system is likely to move slowly northward and may intensify into a depression on Thursday. The resulting atmospheric instability could trigger scattered thunderstorm activity, increasing the risk of lightning strikes across the affected regions. In its advisory, the IMD has urged residents, especially those in vulnerable districts, to remain indoors during thunderstorm spells. People are advised to avoid open fields, water bodies, and tall structures during lightning episodes. The advisory emphasises the importance of taking precautionary measures to avoid injuries or fatalities caused by lightning. In Kolkata, the department has forecast a generally cloudy sky with chances of light to moderate rain or thundershowers throughout the day. Expected precipitation in the city will range from 0.0 mm to 13.3 mm. Meteorological data indicates that the maximum temperature in Kolkata will hover around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to be around 26 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity is expected to remain high, ranging from 79% to 98%, contributing to overall sultry weather conditions.

Kolkata's Alipore Zoo to offer open-air butterfly garden

(Written by Adrija Datta) Strolling through an open-air butterfly garden offers a peaceful and enriching experience, where visitors can observe butterflies fluttering freely among flowers and greenery. It fosters a closer connection with nature, while offering insights into the role of these pollinators in the ecosystem. To bring this experience to the public, the West Bengal Zoo Authority plans to develop an open-air butterfly garden within the Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata. 'The open-air butterfly garden will be constructed next to the zoo library. Through this garden, we aim to promote eco-friendly tourism and raise awareness about butterfly conservation and biodiversity,' said Soumen Mondal, Assistant Director of Alipore Zoological Garden. Unlike enclosed butterfly houses or conservatories, the garden will be open to natural elements, allowing butterflies to move freely in and out. The project will focus on creating a sustainable, butterfly-friendly habitat. Extensive landscaping will replicate ideal conditions for butterfly breeding and feeding. Native host plants—essential for caterpillar nourishment and egg-laying—will be cultivated. Since different butterfly species rely on specific host plants, a diverse selection will help maintain population diversity and stability. To support adult butterflies, nectar-rich flowering plants such as lantana, zinnias, pentas, and butterfly bush (Buddleja) will be planted. These species are well-suited to the local climate and are known to attract native butterflies, encouraging regular activity throughout the year. With an estimated construction cost of Rs 4,95,937, the butterfly garden will be a significant addition to Alipore Zoo's eco-tourism offerings. (The writer is an intern with The Indian Express.)

The event is scheduled for May 31 and June 1, 2025, and will take place across four key tourist lodges managed by the state tourism department: Udayachal (Bidhannagar), Dighali 1 (Digha), Shantobitan (Bolpur), and Mainak (Siliguri). The celebration aims to spotlight the traditional Bengali custom of honoring the jamai (son-in-law). A major highlight of the two-day festival will be an expansive Bengali culinary experience. Meals will be served during lunch (12:01 pm to 3:00 pm) and dinner (7:00 pm to 10:00 pm), featuring a specially curated menu of traditional Bengali delicacies. The meal begins with a refreshing welcome drink of lime soda, followed by a selection of dishes including phulko luchi, alur dom, sugondhi chaaler bhaat, lau diye orhor daal, and jhuro aloo bhaja. Guests can also enjoy a variety of elaborate offerings such as chhanar pur bhora potoler dorma, begun sundori, kaju kishmish pulao, golda chingrir malaikari, bhetki paturi, and pathar kosha mangsho. The feast concludes with quintessential Bengali desserts like kachaa aam er chatni, machher/chingrir papad, paka aam, talshaansh sandesh, pantua, mishti doi, and mishti paan. This full-course meal is priced at Rs 1,099 (inclusive of all taxes) at all four venues. Additionally, Udayachal in Bidhannagar will offer two Bengali-Mughlai fusion cuisine packages. The Rs 649 menu includes bhetki fish fry with mustard, special chicken dum biryani, chicken chaap, and shahi phirni, while the Rs 749 package offers a variation featuring mutton dum biryani in place of chicken. 'Jamai Aador is an initiative to honour the traditional celebration of Jamai Shasthi, a cherished cultural occasion in Bengal that symbolises affection and hospitality towards sons-in-law. This year, we are highlighting the essence of Bengali culinary heritage with an elaborate spread of authentic regional delicacies. In addition to the traditional Bengali fare, we have also introduced Mughlai dishes, blending the richness of two culinary traditions that have long coexisted in Bengal's food culture,' an official of the WBTDCL said.
