Yankees' Spencer Jones hits a 443-foot home run as Triple-A hot streak continues
Spencer Jones stayed hot with a monster home run on Wednesday afternoon. The Yankees' power-hitting outfield prospect hit a 443-foot solo shot in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders' game against the Buffalo Bisons to get his team on the board in the first inning. The dinger came against former big league All-Star Alek Manoah. Jones' latest long ball comes amidst a ridiculous minor-league season for the 2022 first-round pick. The Vanderbilt product was hitting .284/.379/.610 with 31 home runs, 66 RBIs and 25 stolen bases in stints in Double-A and Triple-A in 2025. In 156 at-bats with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre since being promoted in late July, Jones already has 15 homers, including Wednesday's game. 'He's having a good season,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said after Jones was called up to Triple-A. 'So it's been good to see him — obviously, the size stands out. The athleticism, the speed and power really stands out. The ability to control the strike zone. He's doing all those things.' 3 Spencer Jones is rounding the bases after his solo home run on Wednesday. Talkin' Yanks/X Strikeouts have remained the biggest blemish on the 6-foot-7, 240-pound lefty's game. He's punched out 122 times in 331 at-bats in the minors this season, a 31.2 percent strikeout rate, which is among the highest in Triple-A. 3 Spencer Jones just after making contact with his first-inning homer on Wednesday. Talkin' Yanks/X Despite the strikeouts, Jones, 24, is starting to push the Yankees' hand despite a crowded outfield and designated hitter spot. Aaron Judge has been the Bombers' designated hitter, pushing usual-DH Giancarlo Stanton to the outfield, as he deals with an elbow injury. 3 New York Yankees outfielder Spencer Jones #78, hitting a 2-run homer in the 6th inning during a spring training game on Feb. 22, 2025. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Cody Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez have held down the other two outfielder spots while Trent Grisham has filled in nicely as well. Jones is currently ranked No. 91 on Top 100 prospect rankings. He's ranked as the Yankees' No. 4 prospect behind George Lombard Jr., Carlos Lagrange and Cam Schlitter.

Pirates are going to call up Bubba Chandler, baseball's top pitching prospect
PITTSBURGH — Baseball's top pitching prospect is getting called up to the majors. The Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to promote 22-year-old right-hander Bubba Chandler ahead of their game Friday against the Colorado Rockies, a person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the roster move was not yet official. Chandler will join a staff that already includes 2024 NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes. The person told the AP that Chandler will initially work in a 'bulk' bullpen role. Chandler got off to a hot start in Triple-A this year but has stumbled lately and is currently 5-6 with a 4.05 ERA in 100 innings pitched this year for Indianapolis. The Pirates have been careful with Chandler's workload since he moved to pitching full-time ahead of the 2023 season after being projected as a two-way player when he was drafted in 2021. Chandler saw time at shortstop and as a designated hitter early in his minor-league career but struggled at the plate, hitting just .184 with Class-A Greensboro in 2022. Asked in February if he missed hitting, Chandler joked he learned in the minors that for a position player, he's a pretty good pitcher. And potentially a very good one. Yet Pittsburgh has been cautious in bringing Chandler along. He pitched 106 innings in 2023 and 119 innings last season. Chandler got off to a scorching start at Triple-A this spring, posting a 1.33 ERA in April and a 2.54 ERA in May. Pirates general manager Ben Cherington, however, had been hesitant to promote Chandler, citing his relative inexperience as opposed to Skenes, who had a standout career at LSU before the Pirates called him up in May 2024. Chandler's effectiveness has waned of late. He went 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA in three starts this month for Indianapolis. Yet with Pittsburgh heading for a last-place finish in the NL Central, Chandler will get an extended audition in the majors as the club points toward 2026. The top of the Pirates' rotation for next year appears to be set with Skenes and Mitch Keller. The other three spots are a question mark at the moment, with Jared Jones (who has missed all season after having Tommy John surgery), Braxton Ashcraft, Mike Burrows and Johan Oviedo (who made his second start after having Tommy John surgery of his own in late 2023), all in the mix. Chandler can join them with a solid showing, with the club likely looking for chances to put him in low-leverage situations. In that way, having him available for a weekend series against MLB-worst Colorado makes sense.

Iowa football transfer WR promises big growth in Hawkeyes' passing game
Everyone knows Iowa's passing offense hasn't been great this decade. However, few are aware how bad it has been. Since 2020, the Hawkeyes haven't averaged more than 200 passing yards per game in a single season. Two hundred passing yards in a game is a bad performance for most offenses, but for Iowa, that's been a bar it can't pass. Literally. But, it is hoping the situation can be different in 2025. Iowa brought in transfer quarterback Mark Gronowski to try to help solve those passing game woes. While Gronowski is a great step in the right direction, he can't do it alone. Gronowski will need playmakers in the receiving room to make plays. The Hawkeyes also reached into the transfer portal to find him another playmaker, picking up Chattanooga wide receiver Sam Phillips. Last season, Phillips had 49 receptions for 803 yards and three touchdowns with the Mocs. The 5-foot-7, 183-pound senior receiver had more than 2,000 receiving yards across three seasons with Chattanooga. Hopefully, he will bring some explosiveness to Iowa's offense in 2025. Phillips answered questions at Iowa's local media day and made a promise that will have Hawkeye fans ecstatic heading into the new season. What did Sam Phillips say about Iowa football's offense entering 2025? When asked about the wide receiver room's approach to changing Iowa's bad reputation when it comes to the passing game, Phillips had this to say. "I feel like we've been working really hard this offseason. We've been making some explosive plays in camp, we're going to do good, I promise," Phillips said. Iowa fans have seen some of those explosive plays during the open practices. Senior Seth Anderson and sophomore Reece Vander Zee have been on the receiving end of some deep throws from Gronowski that wowed the crowd and took social media by storm. While those plays in camp are great, Hawkeye fans want to see it in an actual game before proclaiming the Iowa passing game problem is solved. Phillips will be a big part of that. He said later in his interview that he chose Iowa for the opportunity to learn and grow. And he'll be a big part of an Iowa passing game that will also learn and grow this season. Hopefully, Iowa can finally pass for over 200 yards per game in 2025. The bar is low, but Hawkeye fans will take any progress that they can get this season.
