Former All-American offensive lineman believes Nebraska should make changes to helmet
A former Pro Bowl offensive lineman doesn't appear to be a fan of Nebraska's helmet design. Former Michigan Wolverine Taylor Lewan posted a short clip of a recent visit to the Husker football facility on social media.
Lewan is a three-time Pro Bowler who played all eight seasons of his career for the Tennessee Titans. Since retiring, he has hosted the podcast 'Bussin' With The Boys' with former Titans teammate and Nebraska linebacker Will Compton.
Lewan's post regarding the helmet came with the following warning. "Nebraska fans are gonna be mad about the way I talk about the N, but unfortunately, I'm not wrong. Love Nebraska, love the fans but the N is just too small for the helmet."
At the start of the 1970 college football season, the Nebraska Cornhuskers debuted their new helmet: a classic white helmet with a red stripe down the middle and an N centered on both sides. For the last 50-plus years, the helmet has remained the same in one form or another. Lewan believes the time has come for some kind of change.
"They've got to do something about that N. Black, white, red, all the colors are great. I love the color scheme of Nebraska. Real fans are going to hate this but there is just something about that Time New Roman bold. It doesn't have the presentation I want it to have."
I can understand where an outsider might see the current design as boring and needing an upgrade, but as a traditionalist, I like the helmet just the way it is.
Nebraska has worn the rare one-off alternative design. The 2012 Wisconsin game featured the same helmet design but a black helmet instead of a white one, and the 2013 UCLA game featured the traditional white helmet design but a black stripe down the center instead of a red stripe.
Other one-off designs featured a 2014 game against Illinois in which the Huskers wore a two-tone red and black helmet with a black N. The most unique design came in 2018 when Nebraska wore a helmet that honored the leather helmets from the early days of college football.
While the traditional helmet design may be simple, it's also iconic. The helmet is immediately identifiable to most college football fans. Any significant changes would ignore decades of history, while any minor changes would be seen as change solely for the sake of change.

Patriots star Stefon Diggs dodges 'personal' questions related to viral boat video
Stefon Diggs, who landed a three-year contract with the New England Patriots this offseason, showed little interest in providing any more details pertaining to the social media video showing him on a yacht. Videos recently surfaced on social media showing Diggs passing what appeared to be a bag of pink crystals to women on a boat. When reporters brought up the video in question at Patriots mandatory minicamp, Diggs said he wanted to avoid delving into his personal life in a public setting. "I want to be as candid with you as possible, but I kind of have a thing where I don't talk about my personal life with people I don't know personally," Diggs said Tuesday as he publicly broke his silence on the viral moment. "I had a conversation with [head coach Mike] Vrabel, obviously, and I'm going to echo everything that he said. He told me he's hoping everybody is making good decisions." The four-time Pro Bowler then said the matter was addressed internally. "And I had a conversation with people in the building as well. So everything else is everything else. The particulars are all internal." Diggs also decided against shedding any light on the contents of what was in the bag he flashed when he was surrounded by three women on a boat. He again cited the internal nature of the matter. "Obviously, it's a conversation that's happening internal, which I can't have too much of a conversation with [you] about it," he said. "I've been in this league 10 years. You can format your question many different ways. I'm going to obviously answer it the same way." It remains unclear whether Diggs was aware he was being recorded when he was on the boat. As it relates to football, Diggs did an offseason workout with his new team last week. He admitted he "hasn't been around much" for the bulk of New England's voluntary offseason program. The 31-year-old continues to work his way back from a torn ACL he suffered in Week 8 last season. Nevertheless, the star receiver said he's been "grinding" and "eager" to be fully medically cleared as he gears up for the regular season. "We'll see how it goes," Diggs responded when asked if he believed he would be able to take the field when the Patriots open the season against the Las Vegas Raiders on Sept. 7. "Obviously, I'm grinding each and every day. I'm eager to get out there, so whenever they do push the button, I'm going to be ready. ... Where I am right now, I wouldn't really put a percentage on it, but I got some work to do." Vrabel, in his first season leading the Patriots, seemed pleased by Diggs' rehab so far and his level of engagement. "He's trying to figure out where everything is and what his role is and making sure that as we add those situations – the third down, the no-huddle and red zone – that he's staying up on it, working hard in his rehab," he said. "Certain drills he can be out there, and there's certain drills that he won't be, but I think he's engaged, and I like his energy." Diggs recorded at least 1,000 receiving yards in six consecutive seasons with the Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills. He appeared in eight games during his lone season with the Houston Texans and finished the 2024 campaign with 496 yards in eight games. Bills Running Back Duo Given Top Ranking By Analyst
Bills Running Back Duo Given Top Ranking By Analyst originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills know what they have in James Cook. In that regard ... Whether he shows up or not for offseason workouts is irrelevant, as 1,000-yard running backs are hard to come by. Advertisement Meanwhile ... A lesser-known talent in Buffalo's backfield happens to be 2024 fourth-round pick Ray Davis. The Kentucky product is coming off a season in which he recorded over 450 yards rushing and 189 yards receiving. While those numbers aren't exactly eye-popping, they do show that Buffalo's duo has the potential to be one of the better ones in the NFL. Bleacher Report writer Moe Moton agrees. He ranked the top 10 running back duos in the NFL. Cook and Davis made the list at No. 8 thanks in part to Davis' potential. "James Cook and Ray Davis come in front of the Pittsburgh Steelers tandem because both running backs have NFL production," Moton said. "The former has earned Pro Bowl nods in consecutive years, and the latter racked up the third-most rushing yards (442) among rookie running backs last year." Advertisement Of course, this list goes by the wayside if Cook sits out beyond training camp and into the regular season. He led the league in rushing touchdowns last year and is looking for a contract that pays him over $15 million. Buffalo doesn't want to spent at that level ... so for now, and if the holdout continues, it will only put more pressure on Davis as a prospect. Oh, and it would sort of ruin the idea of Buffalo boasting a top running back duo. Gipson-Long pitches effectively and Torkelson homers as the Tigers beat the Orioles 5-3
BALTIMORE (AP) — Spencer Torkelson homered and Sawyer Gipson-Long pitched effectively out of the bullpen to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-3 on Tuesday night. Zach McKinstry hit two triples for the Tigers, who have won 11 of 15 and own the best record in the majors at 44-24. Detroit is 4-0 against the Orioles this season, outscoring them 22-9. Making his second start of the season as an opener for the Tigers, Brant Hurter allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. Chase Lee (3-0) got the last out in the third, and Gipson-Long entered in the fourth after Javier Báez hit an RBI single in the top half for a 2-1 lead. Making his second appearance of the year after missing the entire 2024 season due to Tommy John and hip surgeries, Gipson-Long gave up one run and three hits with five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Gipson-Long began the 2024 season on the IL with a groin strain. After just one rehab start, he underwent elbow surgery that April, followed by left hip surgery in July. The 27-year-old right-hander finally returned to the big leagues last week, but did not get a decision against the White Sox. Detroit scored five runs off Cade Povich (1-5) in the first five innings. The big blow was Torkelson's 16th homer, a drive to center with a man on that made it 5-1 in the fifth. Will Vest worked the ninth and earned his 11th save despite allowing a solo homer to Jordan Westburg. Key moment Povich retired the first two batters in the fifth before Riley Greene doubled, Dillon Dingler hit an RBI single and Torkelson went deep, Key stat Detroit is 16-2 in its last 18 games against the AL East, its best mark since an 18-2 run against that division in 1973. Up next The series continues Wednesday night with Detroit RHP Casey Mize (6-1, 2.91 ERA) — who is 4-0 in seven starts since April 13 — going up against RHP Zach Eflin (5-2, 4.47 ERA). ___ AP MLB:
